MLS clubs maneuver to capitalize on Messi

Lionel Messi’s arrival in Major League Soccer (MLS) has caused a surge in interest and revenue for the league, with packed stadiums and heightened excitement surrounding his matches. Clubs have eagerly vied for the opportunity to host games against Inter Miami, knowing that a single matchup with Messi could generate significant income. The league faced challenges in scheduling these highly anticipated games due to the unbalanced nature of the MLS schedule. Despite this, various teams strategically positioned themselves to benefit from hosting Messi. The focus extends beyond immediate financial gains, with clubs aiming to convert casual fans into long-term supporters of their respective teams. While there is anticipation surrounding Messi’s presence, there is also an acknowledgment that he may not play in every game due to factors like fatigue and injuries. Despite this uncertainty, MLS clubs are leveraging the “Messi Effect” to grow their fan bases and boost revenues in the long run.

Of Miami’s 34 games this season, 28 are home-and-homes within the Eastern Conference. The other six were the league’s choice (three home, three away), and MLS ultimately awarded those away games to Los Angeles (this Sunday), Kansas City and Vancouver.
