Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell is set to be immortalized in the city. The North Washington Street Bridge is set to be renamed into the “William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge.” Currently, the bridge is under construction and will connect Charlestown to the West End and North End near TD Garden.
Russell spent his entire playing career with the Celtics, suiting up for 963 regular-season games. He also helped put eleven championship banners in the rafters of the Boston Garden, only missing out on a ring during the 1957-58 season and 1966-67 season.
“The bridge renaming will honor his dedication to civil rights and the fostering of Boston’s youth and young athletes,” The city said, as Veronica Haynes of WCVB reported.
