Kirk Cousins’ Benching Brings His No-Trade Clause into the Spotlight

Posted on December 19, 2024December 19, 2024 by Santiago Leon

The Atlanta Falcons have ignited speculation about quarterback Kirk Cousins’ future after head coach Raheem Morris made the bold decision to bench him in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. While the move reflects a shift in the Falcons’ offensive strategy, it has also brought Cousins’ no-trade clause into sharp focus, raising questions about how the team might navigate the situation.

Cousins’ no-trade clause gives him significant control over his fate, and it’s a key reason why discussions about his future have intensified following the benching. Similar to Derek Carr’s approach with the Raiders a couple of years ago, Cousins could refuse any trade, forcing the Falcons to either keep him or release him. In Carr’s case, he used his clause to demand, “You’re not trading me. Cut me. Pay me what you owe. I’ll become a free agent and choose my next destination on my own.” Cousins now finds himself in a position to take a similar stand.

The Falcons have already invested heavily in Cousins, paying him $90 million for just 14 starts. With his no-trade clause in play, moving on from him becomes a logistical challenge. Unless Cousins agrees to a trade, the Falcons would have no choice but to hold onto him or release him outright, potentially allowing him to test free agency.

This scenario would open the door for Cousins to take a route similar to Russell Wilson, who signed for the minimum with Pittsburgh after his departure from Seattle. Cousins could prioritize finding the right fit over financial considerations, leaving the Falcons to shoulder the burden of their initial investment.

The decision to bench Cousins was a clear turning point. By elevating Penix Jr., the Falcons are signaling a commitment to their rookie quarterback, likely looking to build a younger, more dynamic offense. However, the move also effectively diminishes Cousins’ value in Atlanta’s long-term plans and amplifies the relevance of his contractual protections.

The no-trade clause, previously a background detail, is now a central topic of conversation as the Falcons evaluate their options. For Cousins, the benching represents not only a challenge to his standing in Atlanta but also an opportunity to take control of his career path. For the Falcons, it’s a moment to assess whether they can navigate this high-stakes situation to chart a new direction for the franchise.
