Has There Ever Been a Shutout in Super Bowl History?

Posted on February 9, 2026February 9, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Super Bowl is known for iconic moments, record-breaking performances, and dramatic finishes. But one question that often comes up among NFL fans is simple and surprising:

Has there ever been a shutout in the Super Bowl?

The short answer is no — and that streak has held strong since the very first Super Bowl in 1967.

No Shutouts in Super Bowl History

In the history of the Super Bowl, no team has ever been held scoreless. Across every Super Bowl played, both teams have managed to put points on the board.

Despite dominant defensive performances over the years, a complete 0-point shutout has never happened on the NFL’s biggest stage.

This is especially notable considering:

  • The elite defenses that have appeared in Super Bowls
  • The pressure-packed, low-scoring nature of some championship games
  • The evolution of defensive schemes designed to limit explosive offenses

Yet, every Super Bowl has still featured at least one scoring play from both teams.

Lowest Scoring Performances in Super Bowl History

While no shutouts exist, a few teams came extremely close.

Super Bowl LIII (2019)

  • Los Angeles Rams: 3 points
  • New England Patriots: 13 points
  • Final Score: Patriots 13, Rams 3

This game is widely remembered as the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever and a defensive masterclass.

Super Bowl VI (1972)

  • Miami Dolphins: 3 points
  • Dallas Cowboys: 24 points
  • Final Score: Cowboys 24, Dolphins 3

Despite Miami’s struggles in this game, the Dolphins would go on to win back-to-back Super Bowls the following seasons.

Why a Super Bowl Shutout Has Never Happened

Several factors make a shutout extremely unlikely:

  • Elite offenses usually reach the Super Bowl
  • Field goals alone can prevent a shutout, even in rough offensive games
  • Rule changes over time have increasingly favored offense
  • Short fields created by turnovers or special teams plays often lead to points

Even when touchdowns are hard to come by, teams almost always manage at least a field goal.

Final Answer: Has There Ever Been a Super Bowl Shutout?

No.
There has never been a shutout in Super Bowl history.

The fewest points ever scored by a team in a Super Bowl is three, and that mark has been reached only twice. As defenses continue to evolve, the possibility remains intriguing — but for now, the shutout remains one Super Bowl record that has never been broken.
