Can LIV Golf Players Play in The Masters? Full Eligibility Rules Explained

Posted on April 11, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The rise of LIV Golf has reshaped professional golf, leaving many fans wondering: can LIV Golf players participate in The Masters? The answer is yes—but with important qualifications.

Here’s a complete breakdown of how LIV golfers can still compete at Augusta National and why their presence is becoming more limited.

What Is The Masters Tournament?

The Masters is one of golf’s four major championships, held annually at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Unlike other tournaments, it is privately run by Augusta National, not the PGA Tour.

This distinction is critical because it means Augusta National controls who gets invited to play.

Can LIV Golf Players Compete in The Masters?

Yes, players from LIV Golf are eligible to compete in The Masters, but they must meet the tournament’s official invitation criteria.

There is no automatic ban on LIV players. However, they also do not receive any automatic qualification simply for being part of LIV Golf.

How LIV Golf Players Qualify for The Masters

To play at Augusta, LIV golfers must qualify through one of the same pathways as all professional golfers:

1. Past Masters Champions (Lifetime Invitation)

Winners of The Masters receive a lifetime invite. This is why players like Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, and Jon Rahm continue to appear even after joining LIV.

2. Recent Major Championship Winners

Golfers who have won majors like The Open Championship or U.S. Open within the past five years typically qualify.

3. Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR)

Players ranked in the top 50 in the world receive invitations. However, this has become a major obstacle for LIV players.

4. Previous Masters Performance

  • Top 12 finishers from the previous Masters automatically qualify for the next year.

5. Special Invitations

Augusta National may extend invitations to select players at its discretion.

Why It’s Harder for LIV Golf Players to Qualify

The biggest challenge for LIV golfers is the lack of Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points in most LIV events.

Without these points:

  • Players drop in global rankings
  • Fewer qualify via the top 50 rule
  • Entry depends more on past achievements

As a result, the number of LIV players in The Masters field has gradually declined.

Recent Example: LIV Players at The Masters

In recent editions of The Masters:

  • Around 10 LIV Golf players have competed
  • Most qualified through past victories or exemptions
  • Fewer new LIV players are entering due to ranking limitations

This trend highlights how qualification rules—not bans—are shaping the field.

Final Thoughts

LIV Golf players are not excluded from The Masters, but their path to Augusta is more difficult than ever. Without ranking points or consistent qualification routes, only those with strong past achievements or special invitations continue to compete.

For golf fans, this means The Masters still features some of the biggest names in the sport—but the evolving landscape of professional golf is clearly impacting who gets to wear the iconic green jacket.
