Fanatics-Saudi Flag Football Deal in Doubt After Event Relocation

Posted on April 16, 2026April 16, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The partnership between Fanatics and Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season is facing serious uncertainty after geopolitical tensions disrupted plans for a high-profile international event. The multi-year sponsorship agreement centered around the Fanatics Flag Football Classic, a growing showcase for one of the fastest-rising sports globally.

Why the Fanatics Flag Football Classic Was Moved

Originally scheduled to take place in Riyadh, the event was relocated to Los Angeles following escalating conflict in the Middle East. A coalition involving the United States and Israel launched military actions against Iran, creating instability across the region and forcing organizers to reconsider the event’s location.

Saudi officials reportedly preferred postponing the event until conditions stabilized, but Fanatics chose to proceed in the United States. This disagreement ultimately led Saudi Arabia to pull its financial backing from the event.

Saudi Arabia Withdraws Funding

After the move to Los Angeles, Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh Season withdrew further funding from the project. Despite the setback, Fanatics is expected to continue producing the event through its media arm, Fanatics Studios, signaling confidence in the long-term potential of flag football.

A spokesperson for Fanatics declined to comment, and Saudi officials have not publicly responded, leaving the future of the partnership unclear.

Star Power and Viewership Performance

The event featured major names, including Tom Brady, alongside NFL players and celebrities such as Rob Gronkowski, Jalen Hurts, Jayden Daniels, and Logan Paul. Despite strong competition from the NCAA Tournament, the broadcast drew approximately 650,000 viewers on Fox, indicating solid audience interest.

Flag Football’s Growing Global Importance

Flag football is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, a development strongly supported by the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell. The sport’s expansion is a key priority as the league looks to grow its global footprint and attract new audiences.

The Fanatics Flag Football Classic was positioned as a major step in that direction, combining celebrity appeal with competitive play to boost visibility.

Broader Impact: Saudi Arabia Reassessing Sports Investments

The uncertainty surrounding this deal reflects a wider shift in Saudi Arabia’s spending strategy. Reports indicate the country’s Public Investment Fund may also reduce support for LIV Golf, the high-profile league that previously signed stars like Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau to massive contracts.

Officials have acknowledged that ongoing geopolitical tensions are forcing a reevaluation of financial priorities, particularly in international sports ventures.

What’s Next for Fanatics and Flag Football?

While Fanatics appears committed to continuing the Flag Football Classic, the loss of Saudi backing raises questions about future funding and international expansion. The event’s success in Los Angeles suggests there is still strong demand, but long-term growth may depend on securing stable partnerships.

As flag football continues its rise toward the Olympics, the outcome of this partnership could play a key role in shaping the sport’s global trajectory.
