How the EFL Championship Playoffs Work: Format, Rules and Promotion Explained

Posted on May 8, 2026May 8, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The EFL Championship playoffs are one of the most dramatic events in soccer, determining the final club promoted to the Premier League each season. While the top two teams in the Championship table earn automatic promotion, clubs finishing just below them still have one final opportunity to reach the Premier League through the playoff system.

Here is a complete breakdown of how the EFL Championship playoffs work, including the format, rules, and what’s at stake.

Which Teams Qualify for the EFL Championship Playoffs?

At the end of the regular Championship season:

  • The teams finishing 1st and 2nd are automatically promoted to the Premier League.
  • Teams finishing 3rd through 6th qualify for the playoffs.

Those four clubs compete for the final promotion spot.

EFL Championship Playoff Format

The playoffs consist of two rounds:

Semi-finals

The semi-finals are played over two legs:

  • 3rd place vs. 6th place
  • 4th place vs. 5th place

Each team plays one home match and one away match. The higher-seeded team hosts the second leg.

The winner is determined by the aggregate score across both matches.

What Happens if the Aggregate Score Is Tied?

If the aggregate score is level after both legs:

  • The match goes to extra time.
  • If still tied, a penalty shootout decides the winner.

The away goals rule is not used in the Championship playoffs.

The Championship Playoff Final

The two semi-final winners advance to the playoff final at Wembley Stadium.

Unlike the semi-finals, the final is a single match:

  • Winner earns promotion to the Premier League.
  • If tied after 90 minutes, the game goes to extra time and then penalties if necessary.

The playoff final is often referred to as the “richest game in football” because promotion to the Premier League can bring clubs massive financial benefits through broadcasting revenue, sponsorships, and commercial growth.

Why the EFL Championship Playoffs Are So Popular

The Championship playoffs are known for their intensity and unpredictability. Clubs that narrowly miss automatic promotion still have a chance to reach the Premier League, creating high-pressure matches filled with drama and emotion.

Over the years, the playoffs have produced memorable moments, last-minute goals, and penalty shootouts that have become iconic in English football history.

EFL Championship Promotion System Explained

To summarize:

  • 1st and 2nd place: Automatic promotion
  • 3rd to 6th place: Enter playoffs
  • Playoff winner: Earns the third and final promotion spot

The system keeps the promotion race competitive throughout the season and ensures multiple clubs remain in contention until the very end.
