Has There Ever Been an FA Cup Final Replay? A Look at the Competition’s History

Posted on May 16, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The FA Cup is one of the oldest and most prestigious soccer competitions in the world, producing countless memorable moments and dramatic finishes. Over the years, many fans have wondered: Has there ever been an FA Cup Final replay? The answer is yes — although that rule is now a thing of the past.

FA Cup Finals Used to Have Replays

For much of the tournament’s history, if the FA Cup Final ended in a draw after regulation and extra time, the teams would return for a replay match on a later date to determine the champion.

The most recent FA Cup Final replay took place in 1993, when Arsenal faced Sheffield Wednesday. The first match finished in a 1-1 draw, forcing a replay. Arsenal ultimately won the replay 2-1 after extra time and lifted the trophy.

Replays had long been a traditional part of the competition and often added another layer of drama for fans.

Do FA Cup Finals Still Have Replays?

No. The FA Cup Final no longer includes replay matches.

Under the current rules, if the final is tied after the standard 90 minutes, the match proceeds as follows:

  • 30 minutes of extra time
  • Penalty shootout if the score remains level

This format ensures that the winner is decided on the same day, allowing for a definitive conclusion without requiring another match.

Why Were Replays Removed?

The removal of replays is largely tied to modern scheduling concerns. Football calendars have become increasingly crowded due to domestic leagues, European competitions, international tournaments, and expanded schedules.

Eliminating replays helps:

  • Reduce fixture congestion
  • Limit player fatigue
  • Create more flexibility in scheduling
  • Avoid additional travel and logistical challenges

The Football Association also expanded replay removals beyond the final itself. Beginning with recent competition changes, many replay rounds across the tournament have also been phased out.

FA Cup Tradition Continues to Evolve

While some supporters miss the tradition of replay matches, others prefer the excitement of seeing a winner crowned on the same day. Penalty shootouts and extra-time drama have created unforgettable moments of their own.

The FA Cup continues to evolve while maintaining the rich history that has made it one of soccer’s most iconic competitions. Even though FA Cup Final replays are gone, they remain an important part of the tournament’s legacy.
