How Indy 500 Qualifying Works
Qualifying for the Indy 500 uses a multi-stage format that builds pressure with each session. Every driver makes a four-lap qualifying attempt around Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with the opening round setting the back half of the starting grid.
Positions 16 through 33 are locked in after the first qualifying stage. The fastest drivers then move into additional sessions that determine the front rows and the pole winner.
- The top nine drivers advance into Sunday’s Top 12 qualifying competition.
- Drivers ranked 10–15 compete for the final three Top 12 spots.
- The fastest six drivers reach the Firestone Fast Six round.
- The Fast Six determines the pole winner and the first two rows of the starting grid.
The format creates one of the most dramatic qualifying weekends in motorsports, where fractions of a second can completely change a driver’s chances.

As qualifying unfolds, teams will push their cars to the limit in pursuit of speed and a chance to write their names into Indy 500 history.
