Most Overtimes in NBA Playoff History: What Is the Record?

Posted on May 18, 2026 by Santiago Leon

NBA playoff basketball is known for dramatic finishes, clutch moments, and unforgettable games. While every postseason matchup must end with a winner, some contests take much longer than expected. Fans often ask: What is the most overtimes an NBA playoff game can have?

The answer is simple: there is no limit on overtime periods in the NBA playoffs. Teams continue playing five-minute overtime sessions until a winner is decided. However, the longest playoff games in league history have reached an incredible four overtimes (4OT).

What Is the Record for Most Overtimes in an NBA Playoff Game?

The record for the most overtime periods in NBA playoff history is four overtimes, and it has happened twice.

Boston Celtics vs. Syracuse Nationals (1953 Eastern Division Finals)

The first four-overtime playoff game occurred in 1953 when the Boston Celtics and Syracuse Nationals battled in an Eastern Division Finals matchup. The marathon contest became one of the earliest examples of postseason drama in NBA history.

Denver Nuggets vs. Portland Trail Blazers (2019 Western Conference Semifinals)

More recently, the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers delivered one of the greatest playoff games ever during Game 3 of the 2019 Western Conference Semifinals.

The game lasted 68 total minutes, including:

  • Regulation: 48 minutes
  • Overtime periods: 20 minutes, four five-minute overtimes
  • Final score: Portland Trail Blazers 140, Denver Nuggets 137

The game featured multiple momentum swings, clutch baskets, and memorable performances as players pushed through exhaustion in a historic battle.

Is There a Limit on NBA Playoff Overtimes?

Unlike some sports that use special rules to shorten games, the NBA has no maximum number of overtime periods during the playoffs. Each overtime period lasts five minutes, and if the score remains tied, another overtime period begins.

That means a playoff game could theoretically go to five, six, or even more overtimes in the future.

What Is the Most Overtimes in Any NBA Game?

While the playoff record stands at four overtimes, the overall NBA record for the most overtimes in a game is six overtimes (6OT) during regular-season play.

Final Thoughts

NBA playoff history has produced some unforgettable moments, and marathon games remain among the most exciting experiences for fans. Although no playoff game has gone beyond four overtimes so far, the league’s rules leave the door open for a future game to set a new record.

Until then, the four-overtime playoff battles remain some of the most legendary contests ever played.
