Gio Reyna Returns to USMNT World Cup Squad as Mauricio Pochettino Finalizes 2026 Roster

Posted on May 22, 2026May 22, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The U.S. men’s national team is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and one of the biggest storylines surrounding the roster is the return of Gio Reyna. Despite limited club minutes and lingering questions surrounding his role with the national team, Reyna has reportedly secured a place in coach Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup squad.

Multiple reports indicate that Reyna, along with several key players, has been informed of his selection for the 26-man roster ahead of the official squad announcement.

Gio Reyna Earns Another World Cup Opportunity

Reyna enters his second FIFA World Cup campaign after previously appearing in the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The talented 23-year-old midfielder has long been considered one of the most gifted players in the American player pool, though injuries and inconsistent club playing time have repeatedly slowed his progress.

This season, Reyna logged limited Bundesliga action with Borussia Mönchengladbach, playing just over 500 league minutes. However, he finished the campaign positively, appearing in the club’s final five matches and scoring a goal.

Despite the reduced playing time at the club level, Pochettino reportedly viewed Reyna differently than other players competing for roster spots because of his game-changing ability and technical skill set.

Reyna has registered nine goals in 36 appearances for the United States and remains capable of creating moments that can shift a match at the highest level.

Key USMNT Players Also Make the Squad

Several additional players have reportedly secured spots on the U.S. World Cup roster.

Brenden Aaronson Returns for Second World Cup

Brenden Aaronson is expected to feature in his second World Cup after completing one of the strongest seasons of his professional career. Aaronson played a major role for Leeds United and continued to provide energy and attacking versatility.

Matt Turner Gets Another Opportunity

Veteran goalkeeper Matt Turner also reportedly made the team despite facing competition under Pochettino.

Turner has enjoyed a strong campaign in MLS and remains one of the nation’s most reliable shot-stoppers. His experience on the international stage could prove valuable during the tournament.

Mark McKenzie and Sebastian Berhalter Included

Defender Mark McKenzie earned a spot after becoming a trusted depth option under Pochettino.

Meanwhile, Sebastian Berhalter continues his rise after impressing during previous national team camps and summer competitions.

Diego Luna Left Off Final World Cup Squad

Perhaps the most surprising development involves Diego Luna, who reportedly did not make the final roster.

Luna had become one of the breakout names within the national team setup in 2025, making regular appearances and contributing offensively. The attacker had produced strong numbers with Real Salt Lake and many expected him to secure a World Cup place.

His omission immediately becomes one of the most debated decisions surrounding the roster.

Young prospect Zavier Gozo was also informed that he would not be included.

What This Means for the USMNT at the 2026 World Cup

The reported selections suggest Pochettino is prioritizing a blend of experience, versatility, and high-upside talent as the United States prepares to host the world’s biggest soccer tournament.

Reyna’s return could become one of the defining stories of the USMNT’s World Cup journey. If he can stay healthy and consistently impact games, the midfielder has the potential to become one of the team’s most important players.

The official roster announcement is May 26th, while FIFA’s final submission deadline remains June 1.
