When Do Yellow Cards Reset in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Posted on June 19, 2026June 19, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup features new disciplinary rules that change how yellow card suspensions work throughout the tournament. With 48 teams competing for the first time, FIFA has updated its regulations to reduce the chances of players missing crucial knockout matches because of accumulated cautions.

Here’s everything you need to know about when yellow cards reset during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Do Yellow Cards Reset After the Group Stage?

Yes. All accumulated yellow cards are erased once the group stage concludes.

Players who advance to the knockout rounds begin the Round of 32 with a clean disciplinary record, meaning yellow cards received during the group stage no longer count toward future suspensions.

However, a player who receives enough yellow cards during the group stage to trigger a suspension must still serve that suspension in the Round of 32 before the reset takes effect.

Is There Another Yellow Card Reset?

Yes. FIFA has also introduced a second yellow card reset later in the tournament.

After the quarterfinals, all remaining yellow card accumulations are cleared again. This means players who reach the semifinals start with a clean slate, preventing anyone from missing the World Cup final solely because of yellow card accumulation from earlier knockout matches.

How Do Yellow Card Suspensions Work?

A player is suspended for one match after receiving two yellow cards within the same accumulation period.

  • Group Stage: Two yellow cards result in a one-match suspension, which is served in the Round of 32.
  • Round of 32 through Quarterfinals: After the group stage reset, yellow cards accumulate again. Two yellow cards during this phase lead to a one-match suspension for the semifinal.
  • After the Quarterfinals: Yellow card totals are reset again before the semifinals.

These changes help ensure that the tournament’s biggest matches feature as many eligible players as possible.

What About Red Cards?

Red cards are treated differently.

Unlike yellow cards, red card suspensions do not reset. A player sent off with a straight red card receives at least a one-match suspension, and FIFA may impose additional disciplinary action depending on the severity of the offense.

Players who receive two yellow cards in the same match are also shown a red card and are suspended for the next match.

Why Did FIFA Change the Rule?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition featuring 48 teams and an expanded knockout stage beginning with the Round of 32. FIFA introduced the new yellow card reset system to reduce the likelihood of star players missing high-profile matches because of accumulated cautions rather than serious misconduct.

The updated rule strikes a balance between maintaining discipline and ensuring the tournament’s biggest games are played with the strongest possible squads.

2026 FIFA World Cup Yellow Card Reset Summary

  • Yellow cards reset after the group stage.
  • Players begin the Round of 32 with a clean slate.
  • Yellow cards reset again after the quarterfinals.
  • Two yellow cards within the same accumulation period result in a one-match suspension.
  • Red card suspensions do not reset and are handled separately.

Understanding these rules can help fans follow player availability throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup, especially as teams advance deeper into the knockout rounds.
