Which Players Could Be Suspended for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Semifinals Due to Yellow Card Accumulation?

Posted on July 8, 2026July 8, 2026 by Santiago Leon

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals get underway, several of the tournament’s biggest stars are walking a disciplinary tightrope. A yellow card in the quarterfinals could rule them out of the semifinals if their nation advances.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary rules, yellow card accumulation remains in effect through the quarterfinals before being reset ahead of the semifinals. That means this is the final stage where players can be suspended for accumulating cautions.

Why Are Players at Risk of Missing the Semifinals?

Players who have already received one yellow card earlier in the knockout stage—or who have reached FIFA’s accumulation threshold—will be suspended for the semifinals if they receive another caution in the quarterfinals.

The good news for teams is that all yellow cards are cleared after the quarterfinals, allowing players who avoid another booking to begin the semifinals with a clean disciplinary record.

England Has the Most Players at Risk

England enters its quarterfinal clash against Norway with several key players one booking away from suspension, including:

  • Jude Bellingham
  • Declan Rice
  • Marc Guehi
  • Nico O’Reilly
  • Harry Kane
  • Reece James

Losing any of these players for a potential semifinal would be a significant blow, particularly midfield leaders Bellingham and Rice, along with captain Harry Kane.

France Monitoring Michael Olise’s Situation

France also has an important player on the disciplinary watch list.

Michael Olise is one yellow card away from missing the semifinals. The French Football Federation appealed his booking, but the caution remains in effect, meaning another yellow card against Morocco would result in a suspension should France advance.

Other Players Facing Suspension Risk

According to reports ahead of the quarterfinals, players from the following nations are also one caution away from a semifinal suspension:

  • Morocco
  • Spain
  • Belgium
  • Norway
  • Argentina
  • Switzerland

In total, 17 players across the remaining eight teams enter the quarterfinals at risk of missing the semifinals due to yellow card accumulation.

When Are Yellow Cards Reset?

FIFA resets yellow card accumulation after the quarterfinals. This rule ensures players are not forced to miss the World Cup Final because of yellow cards collected in earlier knockout rounds.

However, players who receive a second yellow card during the quarterfinals will still serve a one-match suspension, meaning they would miss the semifinals.

2026 FIFA World Cup Quarterfinal Schedule

The quarterfinals feature four highly anticipated matchups:

  • France vs. Morocco
  • Spain vs. Belgium
  • Norway vs. England
  • Argentina vs. Switzerland

With a place in the semifinals on the line, players already carrying yellow cards will need to balance aggressive defending with disciplinary caution.

Final Thoughts

The quarterfinals are often decided by moments of brilliance—and moments of discipline. For several of the world’s biggest stars, avoiding a yellow card could be just as important as scoring a goal.

Fans should keep a close eye on the referee’s notebook throughout the quarterfinals, as one mistimed tackle or unnecessary foul could leave a team without one of its key players in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
