Sam LaPorta Injury Update: Lions TE Fully Cleared Ahead of 2026 Training Camp

Posted on July 22, 2026July 22, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has received a major boost ahead of the 2026 NFL season. After missing the final eight games of the 2025 campaign due to a back injury, LaPorta has been fully cleared to return and is expected to participate without restrictions when the Lions open training camp.

The news gives Detroit one of its top offensive playmakers back as the team prepares for another playoff push.

Sam LaPorta Fully Cleared for Training Camp

LaPorta has officially recovered from the back injury that prematurely ended his 2025 season. Following months of rehabilitation, the Pro Bowl tight end has been medically cleared for football activities and is expected to be a full participant in training camp.

His return provides quarterback Jared Goff with one of his most reliable receiving targets and strengthens an offense that remains among the NFC’s most dangerous.

What Injury Did Sam LaPorta Suffer?

LaPorta’s 2025 season came to an end after he suffered a herniated disc in his back, an injury that ultimately required surgery.

The injury forced him to miss the final eight games of the regular season, leaving a noticeable void in Detroit’s passing attack.

Despite the shortened season, LaPorta still produced solid numbers before going down:

  • 40 receptions
  • 489 receiving yards
  • 3 receiving touchdowns
  • Appeared in 9 games

His production once again demonstrated why he has become one of the NFL’s premier young tight ends.

Recovery Progress

Throughout the offseason, LaPorta steadily progressed through his rehabilitation.

He participated in offseason activities on a limited basis while continuing to recover, with Lions head coach Dan Campbell repeatedly expressing confidence that the tight end would be ready for training camp.

Now that LaPorta has been fully cleared, Detroit expects him to resume his role as the team’s starting tight end without any restrictions.

What Sam LaPorta’s Return Means for the Lions

LaPorta’s return is welcome news for an offense loaded with talent.

The Lions already feature one of the NFL’s strongest supporting casts, including quarterback Jared Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, and one of football’s top offensive lines.

Having LaPorta healthy restores another dynamic weapon capable of stretching defenses over the middle of the field while creating matchup problems against linebackers and safeties.

His presence should also help Detroit in the red zone, where he has become one of Goff’s favorite targets.

Outlook for the 2026 NFL Season

Entering the 2026 season fully healthy, LaPorta is positioned to return to the form that made him one of the league’s breakout stars early in his career.

If he remains healthy throughout the season, he could once again rank among the NFL’s top tight ends in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.

For a Lions team with Super Bowl aspirations, getting Sam LaPorta back at full strength may prove to be one of the organization’s biggest offseason victories.
