Can the Philadelphia 76ers Trade for Kyrie Irving? What a LeBron James Reunion Would Take

Posted on July 24, 2026July 24, 2026 by Santiago Leon

With LeBron James officially joining the Philadelphia 76ers, NBA fans have already begun wondering whether another blockbuster move could be on the horizon.

One name immediately stands out: Kyrie Irving.

The two superstars won the 2016 NBA Championship together with the Cleveland Cavaliers and formed one of the league’s most dynamic duos. Now that LeBron is in Philadelphia, speculation has naturally shifted toward whether the 76ers could reunite the pair for another title run.

While an Irving trade is technically possible, several significant obstacles make such a deal difficult.

Could the 76ers Trade for Kyrie Irving?

The short answer is yes.

Under NBA rules, there is nothing preventing the Philadelphia 76ers from acquiring Kyrie Irving through a trade.

However, completing a deal is much easier said than done.

Philadelphia would need to satisfy NBA salary-matching rules while also convincing the Dallas Mavericks to part with one of their franchise’s biggest stars.

Salary Cap Challenges

The biggest hurdle is financial.

Following the additions of LeBron James and their existing core, the 76ers already have one of the NBA’s most expensive rosters.

A trade for Irving would likely require Philadelphia to send out multiple players with significant salaries in return.

Potentially, the deal would involve:

  • Several rotation players.
  • Future draft picks.
  • Young talent.
  • Additional assets to satisfy NBA trade rules.

Constructing a legal trade without dramatically altering the team’s depth would be extremely challenging.

NBA Second Apron Restrictions

The NBA’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement has made blockbuster trades much more complicated.

Teams operating above the league’s second tax apron face strict limitations regarding trades and roster construction.

Those restrictions include:

  • Limited flexibility in combining player salaries.
  • Fewer available trade mechanisms.
  • Reduced options for adding expensive contracts.

If Philadelphia is above that threshold, its ability to execute a major trade becomes considerably more difficult.

Would the Mavericks Even Trade Kyrie Irving?

Even if the 76ers could make the finances work, another question remains:

Would Dallas agree?

At this point, there is no credible indication that the Mavericks are actively shopping Irving.

Although his future has generated speculation following Dallas’ recent roster changes, Irving remains one of the NBA’s elite offensive guards and continues to be viewed as an important piece of the Mavericks’ plans.

Without Dallas’ willingness to negotiate, any discussion about a trade remains hypothetical.

Why Fans Want Another LeBron-Kyrie Reunion

The excitement surrounding a potential reunion is easy to understand.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving created one of the most memorable moments in NBA history during the 2016 NBA Finals, leading the Cavaliers back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Golden State Warriors.

Irving’s iconic Game 7 three-pointer over Stephen Curry remains one of the defining shots of the modern NBA era.

Their chemistry on the court has fueled speculation for years that the two could eventually play together again.

Now that LeBron is in Philadelphia, those rumors have naturally resurfaced.

Would Kyrie Fit With the 76ers?

From a basketball standpoint, Irving would give Philadelphia another elite shot creator alongside LeBron James.

A lineup featuring:

  • LeBron James
  • Kyrie Irving
  • Joel Embiid
  • Tyrese Maxey
  • Jaylen Brown

would instantly become one of the most talented groups in the NBA.

However, assembling that roster would almost certainly require Philadelphia to trade away several key contributors, making it difficult to preserve the depth needed for a championship run.

Is a Trade Realistic?

While the idea captures the imagination of NBA fans, several factors make it unlikely in the near future.

Those include:

  • Complex salary-cap rules.
  • Second apron restrictions.
  • Dallas’ willingness to keep Irving.
  • Philadelphia’s need to maintain roster depth.
  • The significant assets required to complete a blockbuster deal.

Unless circumstances change dramatically, a LeBron-Kyrie reunion in Philadelphia remains more of an intriguing possibility than an imminent reality.

Final Thoughts

The Philadelphia 76ers can technically trade for Kyrie Irving, but the path to completing such a blockbuster would be incredibly difficult.

Salary-cap restrictions, NBA trade rules, roster construction, and Dallas’ willingness to move one of its biggest stars all present major obstacles.

Still, with LeBron James now leading the 76ers, speculation about another reunion with Kyrie Irving is unlikely to disappear anytime soon. If Philadelphia believes adding another superstar is the key to winning an NBA championship, the rumors surrounding Irving will continue to generate headlines throughout the season.
