Lionel Messi to Miss 2026 MLS All-Star Game: Why Inter Miami Star Won’t Play

Posted on July 29, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Lionel Messi will not play in the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, with Major League Soccer officially excusing the Inter Miami superstar as he continues recovering from Argentina’s run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final.

Rather than participating in one of MLS’s showcase events, Messi will use the break to rest after a demanding summer that saw him lead Argentina deep into the World Cup. The decision was made in coordination with Inter Miami and MLS, prioritizing player health ahead of the remainder of the league season.

Why Is Lionel Messi Missing the 2026 MLS All-Star Game?

Messi’s absence is not due to a new injury. Instead, he is following a planned recovery program after logging significant minutes during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The World Cup concluded only weeks before the MLS All-Star festivities, leaving little time for participating players to recover before returning to club competition. MLS determined that players returning from the tournament could receive approved rest periods.

The decision allows Messi to focus on preparing for Inter Miami’s push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Will Lionel Messi Be Suspended for Missing the MLS All-Star Game?

No.

Unlike previous seasons, Messi is not expected to face disciplinary action for missing the All-Star Game.

MLS and the MLS Players Association reached an agreement before the 2026 season permitting individualized recovery plans for players returning from the FIFA World Cup. Because Messi’s absence is officially approved, he remains eligible to return once Inter Miami’s medical staff clears him to play.

Who Replaced Lionel Messi on the MLS All-Star Roster?

Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright was selected to replace Messi on the 2026 MLS All-Star roster.

Bright earns his first All-Star selection after emerging as an important contributor for Inter Miami during the 2026 campaign.

Messi’s teammate Rodrigo De Paul is also unavailable for the event as he continues his own post-World Cup recovery.

When Will Lionel Messi Return for Inter Miami?

While neither Inter Miami nor MLS has announced an exact return date, expectations remain that Messi will rejoin the club shortly after completing his scheduled recovery period.

The additional rest should help ensure he is fully fit for the final stretch of the MLS regular season and any postseason run.

With Inter Miami chasing another trophy, preserving Messi’s health has become a greater priority than participating in the league’s annual exhibition.

Lionel Messi 2026 MLS All-Star Game Status

  • Playing in the All-Star Game? No
  • Reason for absence: Approved recovery period following the 2026 FIFA World Cup
  • Injury: No new injury reported
  • Suspension expected? No
  • Replacement: Yannick Bright (Inter Miami)
  • Rodrigo De Paul status: Also unavailable due to post-World Cup recovery
  • Expected return: Following completion of his recovery plan, pending Inter Miami medical clearance

Final Thoughts

Although fans were hoping to see Lionel Messi headline the 2026 MLS All-Star Game, his absence reflects MLS’s emphasis on player wellness after an intense World Cup schedule. With Inter Miami still competing for major honors this season, allowing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner additional recovery time could prove far more valuable than an appearance in the league’s midsummer showcase.
