Did NBC Sports Change to USA Sports? What the New USA Sports Brand Means

Posted on August 22, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Meta Description: Did NBC Sports change to USA Sports? Learn why USA Sports launched in 2026, what happened to NBC Sports, and how Comcast’s Versant spinoff changed sports coverage on USA Network and Golf Channel.

If you’ve recently watched sports on USA Network and noticed the USA Sports name and branding, you may be wondering: Did NBC Sports change to USA Sports?

The short answer is no โ€” NBC Sports did not simply change its name to USA Sports.

Instead, the change is the result of Comcast separating several of its cable networks into a new company called Versant. That separation created two distinct sports operations: NBC Sports, which remains part of NBCUniversal, and USA Sports, which operates under Versant.

The change became particularly noticeable in 2026 as USA Sports branding began appearing around events previously associated with NBC Sports.

Here is what happened and what the difference is between NBC Sports and USA Sports.

Did NBC Sports Become USA Sports?

No. NBC Sports did not become USA Sports.

NBC Sports continues to operate as NBCUniversal’s sports division.

USA Sports, meanwhile, is a separate sports brand created by Versant, the company formed from Comcast’s spinoff of several cable television properties.

The confusion comes from the fact that some sports programming previously presented under the broader NBC Sports umbrella airs on networks that became part of Versant.

As a result, viewers who previously saw NBC Sports branding around certain broadcasts may now see USA Sports instead.

What Is USA Sports?

USA Sports is Versant’s sports programming and production brand.

The division oversees sports programming associated with Versant properties including USA Network and Golf Channel.

USA Sports officially emerged as a major consumer-facing sports brand following the separation of Versant from Comcast.

Its portfolio includes coverage connected to properties such as:

  • Premier League
  • NASCAR
  • PGA Tour and other golf coverage
  • WNBA
  • WWE and other sports programming

Exactly where individual events air depends on the applicable television and streaming agreements.

Why Was USA Sports Created?

USA Sports was created following Comcast’s decision to separate several of its cable networks from NBCUniversal.

The new publicly traded company, Versant, received properties including USA Network, Golf Channel, CNBC, MSNBC/MS NOW, E!, Oxygen and SYFY, among others.

That created an unusual situation for sports broadcasting.

USA Network and Golf Channel had historically been closely integrated with NBC Sports coverage. Once those networks became part of a separate company, Versant needed its own identity for its sports operations.

That identity became USA Sports.

Instead of sports on USA Network automatically being presented as part of NBC Sports, Versant can now use USA Sports as its overarching sports brand.

Does NBC Sports Still Exist?

Yes. NBC Sports still exists and remains a major sports broadcaster.

NBC Sports continues to operate under NBCUniversal and oversees sports programming distributed through platforms including NBC and Peacock.

NBCUniversal also revived the NBC Sports Network name with a new 24-hour NBCSN channel, further demonstrating that NBC Sports itself has not disappeared.

NBC Sports continues to hold and distribute coverage involving major properties such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, Olympics, Premier League and college sports, depending on the applicable media rights.

Therefore, seeing USA Sports branding does not mean NBC Sports has been eliminated.

What Is the Difference Between NBC Sports and USA Sports?

The biggest difference is ownership and the networks each operation controls.

Sports Brand Parent Company Major Platforms
NBC Sports NBCUniversal NBC, Peacock, NBCSN
USA Sports Versant USA Network, Golf Channel

Before the Versant separation, these networks existed within the broader Comcast/NBCUniversal ecosystem.

After the separation, USA Network and Golf Channel became Versant properties while NBC and Peacock remained with NBCUniversal.

That required the sports operations to be divided as well.

Is USA Network Still Part of NBC?

No. USA Network is now part of Versant rather than NBCUniversal.

This is one of the most important changes for viewers trying to understand the new sports broadcasting landscape.

For years, USA Network served as an important secondary television destination for NBC Sports.

Premier League matches, NASCAR races, Olympic events and other programming could move between NBC and USA Network while remaining within the same corporate family.

The Versant spinoff changed that structure.

USA Network now belongs to Versant, which is why sports broadcasts on the channel can carry USA Sports branding rather than NBC Sports branding.

What Happened to Golf Channel?

Golf Channel was also included in the Versant separation.

The network continues to operate under the familiar Golf Channel name, but it is now part of Versant’s portfolio and falls within the broader USA Sports operation.

That means viewers can still watch Golf Channel while the underlying corporate structure behind the network has changed.

Why Is Premier League Soccer on Both NBC Sports and USA Sports?

The Premier League is one area where the new arrangement can be especially confusing.

NBCUniversal retains the U.S. media rights relationship with the Premier League, while USA Network has historically been one of the primary television destinations for matches.

Because USA Network became part of Versant, the companies established arrangements that allow sports programming to continue appearing across the relevant platforms.

As a result, Premier League viewers may encounter both NBC Sports and USA Sports branding, depending on where and how a particular match is being presented.

For fans, the most important thing is to check the specific channel and streaming platform for each match rather than assuming every Premier League broadcast will appear under the same sports brand.

Is USA Sports a New TV Channel?

USA Sports is primarily a sports brand and division rather than simply a replacement television channel for NBC Sports.

USA Network remains an actual television network.

Golf Channel remains an actual television network.

USA Sports serves as the broader identity connecting Versant’s sports programming across those properties.

This is similar to how NBC Sports functions as an overarching sports operation across NBCUniversal platforms.

What Happened to the Original NBCSN?

The situation can become even more confusing because of the NBCSN name.

The original NBC Sports Network shut down on December 31, 2021, with much of its sports programming moving to USA Network and Peacock.

That made USA Network increasingly important to NBC Sports over the following years.

However, NBCUniversal subsequently brought the NBC Sports Network/NBCSN name back as a new 24-hour sports network in November 2025.

The modern NBCSN therefore should not be confused with USA Sports.

NBCSN belongs to NBCUniversal’s NBC Sports operation, while USA Sports belongs to Versant.

NBC Sports vs. USA Sports Explained

The easiest way to understand the change is this:

NBC Sports and USA Sports are now separate sports brands operated by separate companies.

NBC Sports remains with NBCUniversal and continues distributing sports primarily through NBC, Peacock and NBCSN.

USA Sports belongs to Versant and oversees sports programming across properties including USA Network and Golf Channel.

So, NBC Sports did not change its name to USA Sports.

Instead, Comcast’s separation of its cable networks created a new company and ultimately a new sports identity.

For viewers, that means the familiar NBC Sports ecosystem has effectively been divided, with NBC Sports and USA Sports now operating alongside one another in the changing U.S. sports television landscape.
