What Is the Champions League League Phase?

The Champions League no longer uses the traditional eight-group format that previously featured four teams in each group.

Instead, 36 teams compete together in one league table.

Each club plays eight league-phase matches against eight different opponents, with four games at home and four away.

Teams earn three points for a victory and one point for a draw, just as they would in a traditional domestic league.

The standings after all eight matches determine which clubs advance to the knockout portion of the tournament.

How Do Teams Advance From the Champions League League Phase?

The league-phase standings determine three different outcomes.

The top eight teams automatically qualify for the Champions League Round of 16.

Teams finishing ninth through 24th enter a two-leg knockout phase playoff for the remaining Round of 16 positions.

Teams finishing 25th through 36th are eliminated from European competition.

That format makes every league-phase match important because finishing inside the top eight allows clubs to avoid the additional playoff round.

When Does the Champions League League Phase End?

The 2026-27 Champions League league phase concludes January 27, 2027.

By that point, all 36 teams will have completed their eight league-phase matches.

The final standings will determine the eight automatic Round of 16 qualifiers, the clubs heading into the knockout playoffs and the teams eliminated from the competition.

When Is the 2027 Champions League Final?

The 2027 UEFA Champions League final is scheduled for Saturday, June 5, 2027, in Madrid, Spain.

The match will determine the champion of the 2026-27 Champions League season and conclude a tournament that stretches from qualifying in the summer of 2026 through the final in June 2027.

When Did Champions League Qualifying Start?

Although the main Champions League league phase begins September 8, the overall 2026-27 Champions League competition began with qualifying in July 2026.

Qualifying rounds allow clubs from leagues throughout Europe to compete for positions in the league phase.

For many fans, however, the September 8 start of the league phase represents the beginning of the main Champions League tournament.

2026-27 Champions League Begins September 8

The wait for Champions League soccer is nearly over.

The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League league phase officially begins Tuesday, September 8, with Matchday 1 running through Thursday, September 10.

The opening slate immediately features several major European matchups, including Real Madrid vs. Inter, Porto vs. Manchester City, Liverpool vs. Atlético Madrid and Napoli vs. Arsenal.

From there, the 36 participating clubs will play eight league-phase matches before the competition transitions into its knockout rounds and ultimately concludes with the Champions League final in Madrid on June 5, 2027.
