Why Isn’t Brock Bowers Playing Today? Raiders TE Injury Status vs Dolphins in NFL Week 1

Posted on September 13, 2026September 13, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers isn’t playing today against the Miami Dolphins because he is recovering from a left knee meniscus injury and underwent surgery earlier this week.

Bowers underwent a meniscus trim procedure Tuesday, September 8, after dealing with the knee injury during training camp.

Although there had initially been optimism that Bowers might recover quickly enough to play in the Raiders’ regular-season opener, Las Vegas ultimately ruled its star tight end out for Week 1.

The Dolphins vs Raiders game kicks off at 4:25 PM ET today, Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Why Isn’t Brock Bowers Playing Today vs Dolphins?

Brock Bowers isn’t playing against the Miami Dolphins because he is recovering from surgery on his left knee.

Bowers underwent a procedure to address a meniscus injury just five days before the Raiders’ Week 1 game.

Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak initially expressed optimism about the possibility of Bowers being available for the season opener.

However, the short turnaround following surgery ultimately made playing against Miami unrealistic.

The Raiders are therefore giving Bowers additional time to recover rather than rushing one of their most important offensive players back onto the field.

What Is Brock Bowers’ Injury?

Bowers is dealing with a meniscus injury in his left knee.

The meniscus is cartilage inside the knee that helps cushion and stabilize the joint.

Meniscus injuries can vary considerably in severity and treatment. In Bowers’ case, he reportedly underwent a meniscus trim procedure, which removes or cleans up the damaged portion of the cartilage rather than performing a more extensive repair.

That distinction can significantly affect recovery time.

A full meniscus repair can require a much longer rehabilitation period, while a trim can sometimes allow an athlete to return considerably sooner.

Did Brock Bowers Have Surgery?

Yes. Brock Bowers underwent surgery on his left knee Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The procedure addressed the meniscus issue that had affected Bowers leading into the regular season.

The timing of the operation immediately put his Week 1 availability in question.

Although Bowers apparently made encouraging progress following the procedure, Las Vegas decided not to have him play only five days after surgery.

Is Brock Bowers Playing Today?

No. Brock Bowers is out for Raiders vs Dolphins in Week 1.

His absence is significant for a Raiders offense that relies heavily on Bowers as both a receiving threat and matchup problem for opposing defenses.

Bowers’ ability to line up in multiple positions allows Las Vegas to create favorable matchups against linebackers and defensive backs.

Without him, the Raiders will have to redistribute targets and offensive snaps among their other tight ends and receivers.

Who Is Replacing Brock Bowers Today?

Michael Mayer is expected to take on a larger role at tight end with Bowers unavailable against Miami.

Mayer gives Las Vegas an experienced option who can contribute both as a receiver and blocker.

The Raiders also elevated Chris Myarick from the practice squad to provide additional tight end depth for Week 1.

Las Vegas could use multiple players to replace Bowers’ production rather than asking one tight end to completely fill his role.

When Will Brock Bowers Return?

The encouraging news for Raiders fans is that Bowers may not be facing an extended absence.

There is reportedly optimism within the organization that Bowers could potentially return as soon as Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

That would mean Bowers misses only the Raiders’ season opener.

However, his Week 2 availability will ultimately depend on how his knee responds during the coming days and whether he is able to return to practice.

Las Vegas is unlikely to rush Bowers back if there are concerns about swelling, discomfort or his ability to perform normally.

Could Brock Bowers Play in NFL Week 2?

Yes, Brock Bowers could potentially return in Week 2, although his availability has not yet been guaranteed.

The Raiders will likely evaluate Bowers throughout the upcoming practice week before determining whether he can play against the Chargers.

His practice participation will provide an important indication of his progress.

Even if Bowers is cleared to play, Las Vegas could potentially manage his workload during his first game back from surgery.

What Brock Bowers’ Absence Means for the Raiders

Losing Bowers for Week 1 removes one of the Raiders’ most dangerous offensive weapons.

Bowers has the versatility to operate as a traditional tight end, line up in the slot and create mismatches throughout the formation.

Without him, Miami’s defense will not have to devote as much attention to defending the middle of the field against one of the NFL’s premier tight ends.

That could increase the importance of Mayer and Las Vegas’ wide receivers in the passing game.

The Raiders may also adjust their personnel packages and offensive game plan to compensate for Bowers’ absence.

Brock Bowers Injury Status: Bottom Line

Brock Bowers isn’t playing today against the Miami Dolphins because he is recovering from a left knee meniscus procedure performed earlier this week.

The Raiders initially hoped Bowers might be able to play in Week 1, but ultimately decided to keep him out of the season opener.

Michael Mayer is expected to take on a larger role at tight end while Bowers is sidelined.

The positive news for Las Vegas is that Bowers’ absence could be relatively brief.

If his recovery continues progressing well, Bowers could potentially return for the Raiders’ Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
