What Happens if Chiefs Win, Tie or Lose vs Broncos? NFL Week 1 AFC West Impact

Posted on September 14, 2026September 14, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Kansas City Chiefs host the Denver Broncos tonight, Monday, September 14, 2026, in a major AFC West matchup on Monday Night Football.

Kansas City and Denver both enter the game 0-0, making tonight the season opener for both AFC West rivals. Kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled for 8:15 PM ET / 7:15 PM CT.

Although a Week 1 result cannot clinch or eliminate either team from the playoffs, the game carries additional importance because it is a division matchup.

A Chiefs victory would immediately give Kansas City an important win over an AFC West rival, while a loss would give Denver the early advantage in the season series.

Here is what happens if the Chiefs win, tie or lose against the Broncos tonight.

What Happens if the Chiefs Beat the Broncos?

If the Chiefs beat the Broncos, Kansas City will improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the AFC West.

Denver would fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the division.

Kansas City would also earn an important head-to-head victory over Denver, which could become significant later in the season if the Chiefs and Broncos finish with identical records.

The Chiefs would join the Las Vegas Raiders at 1-0 among the early leaders in the AFC West.

A victory would give Kansas City:

Overall Record: 1-0
AFC West Record: 1-0
Record vs Broncos: 1-0
Playoff Status: Not clinched
Division Status: Early advantage over Denver

Because head-to-head record is an important NFL divisional tiebreaker, beating Denver could have implications well beyond Week 1.

What Happens if the Chiefs and Broncos Tie?

If the Chiefs and Broncos tie, both teams will move to 0-0-1.

Kansas City and Denver would also have a 0-0-1 AFC West record.

Neither team would earn the full advantage that comes with winning the first meeting of the season.

A tie would leave Kansas City with:

Overall Record: 0-0-1
AFC West Record: 0-0-1
Record vs Broncos: 0-0-1
Playoff Status: Not clinched or eliminated

For NFL standings purposes, ties are included when calculating winning percentage.

While uncommon, a tie could become important if the AFC West race remains close later in the season.

What Happens if the Chiefs Lose to the Broncos?

If the Chiefs lose to the Broncos, Kansas City will fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the AFC West.

Denver would improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the division.

The Broncos would also take a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over Kansas City entering their second meeting of the season.

A loss would leave Kansas City with:

Overall Record: 0-1
AFC West Record: 0-1
Record vs Broncos: 0-1
Playoff Status: Not eliminated
Division Status: Denver owns early head-to-head advantage

Kansas City would also begin the season behind the 1-0 Raiders and 1-0 Broncos in the AFC West standings.

However, with 16 regular-season games remaining, a Week 1 defeat would not put Kansas City in anything close to an elimination situation.

Can the Chiefs Be Eliminated From the Playoffs if They Lose Tonight?

No. The Chiefs cannot be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to the Broncos in Week 1.

Kansas City would simply begin the season 0-1.

The Chiefs would still have 16 games remaining to compete for the AFC West championship or one of the AFC’s Wild Card playoff positions.

The primary consequence of losing tonight would be falling behind Denver in both the division standings and head-to-head tiebreaker.

Can the Chiefs Clinch Anything With a Win?

No. The Chiefs cannot clinch the AFC West or a playoff berth by beating Denver tonight.

It is only Week 1 of the 2026 NFL regular season.

However, Kansas City would earn one of the most valuable types of victories available during the regular season: a win against a division opponent.

Division games can become particularly important because NFL playoff tiebreakers consider factors including head-to-head results and division records when determining division champions.

Why Is Chiefs vs Broncos Important for the AFC West?

Chiefs vs Broncos is important because both teams compete in the AFC West alongside the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers.

The Raiders already opened the season with a victory, while the Chargers started 0-1.

That means Kansas City has an opportunity to immediately move to 1-0 and keep pace near the top of the division.

Denver has the same opportunity.

The result also establishes the first half of the season series between Kansas City and Denver.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again on November 1, 2026, in Denver.

If Kansas City wins both games, the Chiefs would sweep the season series and own a major head-to-head advantage should the teams eventually need a divisional tiebreaker.

Chiefs vs Broncos Win, Tie or Loss Scenarios

If Chiefs Win: Kansas City moves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the AFC West.

If Chiefs Tie: Kansas City moves to 0-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the AFC West.

If Chiefs Lose: Kansas City falls to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the AFC West.

No outcome tonight will clinch or eliminate Kansas City from playoff contention.

The biggest immediate impact is on the AFC West standings, division record and head-to-head series against Denver.

What Time Is Chiefs vs Broncos Tonight?

Chiefs vs Broncos kicks off at 8:15 PM ET / 7:15 PM CT tonight, Monday, September 14, 2026.

The game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

For viewers across the United States, kickoff is scheduled for:

8:15 PM ET
7:15 PM CT
6:15 PM MT
5:15 PM PT

What Channel Is Chiefs vs Broncos On Tonight?

Chiefs vs Broncos will be televised nationally on ESPN and ABC as part of Monday Night Football.

Fans should tune in before the scheduled 8:15 PM ET kickoff for pregame coverage.

What Is at Stake for the Chiefs Tonight?

The Chiefs are not facing a must-win situation in Week 1, but beating Denver would provide Kansas City with an ideal start to the 2026 NFL season.

A Chiefs win means a 1-0 overall record, a 1-0 AFC West record and an early head-to-head advantage against Denver.

A tie would put Kansas City at 0-0-1 and leave the season series undecided heading into the second meeting.

A Chiefs loss would drop Kansas City to 0-1 and give Denver the early advantage in both the AFC West standings and head-to-head series.

With an entire regular season ahead, tonight’s result will not determine Kansas City’s playoff fate. But in what could become a competitive AFC West race, securing a division victory over the Broncos in Week 1 could prove valuable later in the 2026 season.
