Does the Buffalo Bills’ New Highmark Stadium Have a Roof or Heated Field?

Posted on September 18, 2026September 18, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Buffalo Bills’ new Highmark Stadium brings major upgrades to the team’s home in Orchard Park, New York, but it remains an open-air NFL venue designed to preserve the cold-weather atmosphere associated with Bills football.

One of the biggest questions surrounding the new stadium is whether it has a roof and whether the playing field is heated. The answer is that Highmark Stadium does not have a full roof or dome, but it does feature extensive canopy coverage and a heated natural-grass playing surface.

Does the New Highmark Stadium Have a Roof?

No. The Buffalo Bills’ new Highmark Stadium does not have a retractable roof or permanent dome.

Instead, the stadium features a large canopy structure designed to cover approximately 64% of the seating bowl. The canopy provides many fans with additional protection from rain, snow and other elements while maintaining the outdoor environment.

That means Bills games can still feature the snow, wind and freezing temperatures that have long been part of the team’s home-field identity.

The canopy is also designed to help reduce the impact of wind inside the stadium compared with the Bills’ previous venue.

Does Highmark Stadium Have a Heated Field?

Yes. The new Highmark Stadium features a heated natural-grass field.

The playing surface uses Kentucky bluegrass, with an underground heating system designed to help keep the field from freezing during Western New York’s harsh winter conditions.

Heating the field does not mean snow cannot accumulate during a game. Because the stadium remains open to the sky, snow can still fall directly onto the playing surface.

Instead, the underground heating system is primarily designed to maintain better field conditions and prevent the ground from becoming severely frozen.

Can It Still Snow During Buffalo Bills Games?

Absolutely.

Because there is no roof covering the playing field, snow can still fall throughout a Bills game at the new Highmark Stadium.

Fans could therefore continue to see memorable Buffalo snow games even though the stadium itself offers considerably more weather protection than the previous facility.

The combination gives the Bills a modern stadium without completely eliminating one of the most recognizable characteristics of playing football in Buffalo.

Does the New Highmark Stadium Have Heated Seating Areas?

The stadium incorporates additional cold-weather features beyond the heated field.

These include heated concourse areas and radiant heating in portions of the seating environment, helping improve comfort during late-season games when temperatures in Orchard Park can fall well below freezing.

The canopy also incorporates technology intended to manage snow accumulation.

New Highmark Stadium Roof and Field at a Glance

Full roof: No

Retractable roof: No

Open-air stadium: Yes

Canopy over seating: Yes, approximately 64% of the seating bowl

Heated field: Yes

Playing surface: Natural Kentucky bluegrass

Can snow fall onto the field? Yes

Cold-weather heating features: Yes, including underground field heating and heating in portions of the spectator areas

Why Didn’t the Buffalo Bills Build a Dome?

The decision to construct an open-air stadium allows the Bills to maintain the traditional outdoor football experience associated with Buffalo.

Rather than completely enclosing the venue, the stadium’s design attempts to provide a middle ground: significantly more protection and comfort for spectators while keeping the playing field exposed to Western New York weather.

That means the new Highmark Stadium can deliver modern NFL amenities without eliminating the possibility of the classic snowy Bills games that have become synonymous with December and January football in Buffalo.

Bottom Line

The Buffalo Bills’ new Highmark Stadium does not have a full roof or dome, so games remain exposed to rain, snow and cold temperatures.

However, the stadium has a large canopy covering roughly 64% of the seating bowl and a heated natural-grass field with underground heating.

In other words, Buffalo can still have its famous snow games—but the players and fans will experience them inside a much more weather-conscious stadium than before.
