Did the San Francisco 49ers Ever Consider Signing Tyreek Hill?

Posted on September 23, 2026September 23, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The San Francisco 49ers have been linked to superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill on multiple occasions, but there is an important distinction between NFL speculation and an actual pursuit by the organization.

Despite reports and analysts repeatedly identifying San Francisco as a potential destination for Hill, there has been no confirmed report that the 49ers made an official trade offer or entered serious negotiations to acquire him.

Tyreek Hill Was Linked to the 49ers in 2025

The Tyreek Hill-to-San Francisco speculation gained momentum during the 2025 NFL offseason.

The 49ers had traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders, while Brandon Aiyuk was recovering from ACL and MCL injuries. That created questions about whether San Francisco needed another major weapon for quarterback Brock Purdy.

In May 2025, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk identified the 49ers as one of several teams that should consider contacting the Miami Dolphins about Hill. The Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers were also mentioned as possible fits.

At the time, 49ers general manager John Lynch did not rule out adding another receiver.

“You never close the door on that,” Lynch said when discussing the possibility of strengthening the position. Lynch added that the 49ers would be interested if an opportunity presented itself to improve the roster, although he expressed confidence in the receivers already on the team.

Importantly, Lynch was speaking generally about adding a receiver and did not confirm that San Francisco had contacted Miami about Hill.

Why Tyreek Hill Made Sense for the 49ers

From a football standpoint, it wasn’t difficult to understand the speculation.

Hill’s elite speed and ability to stretch a defense would seemingly fit well in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Pairing Hill with Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and San Francisco’s other offensive weapons could have created matchup problems throughout the field.

The 49ers also had uncertainty at wide receiver following Samuel’s departure and Aiyuk’s injury.

However, there were financial considerations.

The 49ers spent the 2025 offseason trying to become younger and less expensive. Lynch later explained that the organization needed to reduce costs while maintaining its core roster and working around Brock Purdy’s new contract.

Taking on Hill’s substantial compensation would therefore have represented a significant investment at a time when San Francisco was attempting to reshape its salary structure.

Did the 49ers Actually Try to Trade for Tyreek Hill?

There is a difference between the 49ers being a logical destination and the team actually trying to acquire Hill.

Public reporting established that analysts viewed San Francisco as a potential landing spot and that Lynch was open to improving the receiver room.

However, there was no publicly confirmed trade offer from the 49ers for Hill.

There also was no confirmation from Lynch, Shanahan or the Dolphins that San Francisco entered serious negotiations for the receiver.

That makes the 2025 connection better described as a potential fit rather than a confirmed pursuit.

Tyreek Hill and the 49ers Connection in 2026

Hill’s name has continued to surface in discussions surrounding San Francisco as the 49ers deal with changes and injuries at wide receiver.

The position remained an important area for the organization entering 2026. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Lynch specifically identified wide receiver as an area requiring attention while discussing the uncertain future of Brandon Aiyuk.

That naturally makes a proven veteran such as Hill an intriguing name whenever San Francisco looks for additional offensive help.

But unless reports emerge confirming direct contact, contract discussions or an offer from the 49ers, the Hill-to-San Francisco connection should still be viewed primarily as speculation.

Could Tyreek Hill Fit the 49ers Offense?

From a purely schematic perspective, Hill would be an intriguing addition to a Kyle Shanahan offense.

His speed could force defenses to protect the deep portion of the field while potentially creating additional space underneath for players such as McCaffrey and Kittle.

Shanahan has also historically found creative ways to manufacture opportunities for explosive offensive players.

The larger questions would involve Hill’s health, contract demands, age, roster fit and how much San Francisco would be willing to invest in another veteran receiver.

Bottom Line: Did the 49ers Consider Tyreek Hill?

The San Francisco 49ers were frequently mentioned as a possible Tyreek Hill destination, particularly during the 2025 offseason when the team was rebuilding its wide receiver room.

John Lynch publicly left the door open to adding another receiver, and outside analysts specifically suggested that San Francisco should inquire about Hill.

However, there is no confirmed public evidence that the 49ers made Miami a trade offer for Hill or formally pursued him.

So while Tyreek Hill to the 49ers has been a legitimate NFL talking point, the available evidence indicates it was primarily a proposed or speculative pairing rather than a confirmed San Francisco transaction attempt.
