The 2026 MLB playoff picture is coming down to the final weekend of the regular season, with most of the postseason field already secured but several important races still undecided.
With just two days remaining in the 2026 MLB regular season, 10 teams have clinched postseason berths. The remaining drama centers on the American League West, the final National League Wild Card spot, and positioning within the American League bracket.
Here is the updated 2026 MLB playoff bracket, standings and postseason picture heading into the final games of the regular season.
2026 American League Playoff Picture
If the season ended with the current playoff positions, the American League bracket would look like this:
No. 1 Tampa Bay Rays โ AL East
First-round bye
No. 2 Cleveland Guardians โ AL Central
First-round bye
No. 3 Houston Astros โ AL West
Wild Card Series host
No. 4 New York Yankees โ Wild Card
No. 5 Boston Red Sox โ Wild Card
No. 6 Chicago White Sox โ Wild Card
Current AL Wild Card Series
No. 6 Chicago White Sox at No. 3 Houston Astros
No. 5 Boston Red Sox at No. 4 New York Yankees
The Yankees-Red Sox matchup is locked into the No. 4 vs. No. 5 portion of the bracket, setting up another potential postseason chapter between the longtime AL East rivals.
The No. 3 vs. No. 6 matchup, however, can still change.
Rays Secure No. 1 Seed in American League
The Tampa Bay Rays have secured the AL’s No. 1 seed after winning the AL East.
That gives Tampa Bay home-field advantage throughout the American League playoffs and, importantly, a bye through the Wild Card Series.
The Rays will face the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 Wild Card Series in the AL Division Series.
Guardians and White Sox Still Have AL Central Implications
The Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox have both secured playoff berths, but their final positions have major implications.
Cleveland entered the final weekend with the advantage in the AL Central race. The division champion receives the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.
Chicago owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cleveland, meaning a tie in the final standings would favor the White Sox.
The AL Central runner-up becomes the No. 6 seed and must play in the Wild Card Series.
That makes the difference between winning and losing the division enormous: one team advances directly to the ALDS, while the other has to survive a best-of-three opening round.
Astros and Rangers Battling for AL West
One of the biggest unresolved questions is the AL West race between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers.
Houston currently occupies the No. 3 playoff position, but the division has not been decided.
The Astros own the season-series tiebreaker over Texas. If Houston and Texas finish the regular season with identical records, Houston would win the AL West.
The division winner becomes the No. 3 seed and hosts the AL Central runner-up in the Wild Card Series.
The loser could miss the postseason entirely.
2026 National League Playoff Picture
The National League division races are already settled.
The current bracket looks like this:
No. 1 Milwaukee Brewers โ NL Central
First-round bye
No. 2 Los Angeles Dodgers โ NL West
First-round bye
No. 3 Atlanta Braves โ NL East
Wild Card Series host
No. 4 San Diego Padres โ Wild Card
No. 5 Chicago Cubs โ Wild Card
No. 6 Philadelphia Phillies โ Wild Card
Current NL Wild Card Series
No. 6 Philadelphia Phillies at No. 3 Atlanta Braves
No. 5 Chicago Cubs at No. 4 San Diego Padres
The biggest remaining question is whether Philadelphia can hold onto the final Wild Card berth.
Brewers Claim No. 1 Seed in National League
The Milwaukee Brewers have secured the top position in the National League.
Milwaukee will skip the Wild Card Series and advance directly into the NLDS.
The Brewers will eventually face the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 Wild Card Series.
Dodgers Secure No. 2 Seed and First-Round Bye
The defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers have secured the No. 2 seed in the National League.
Los Angeles will also bypass the Wild Card Series and begin its postseason in the NLDS.
The Dodgers will face the winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 Wild Card Series.
Braves Win NL East and Take No. 3 Seed
The Atlanta Braves have won the NL East and will enter the postseason as the No. 3 seed.
Unlike Milwaukee and Los Angeles, Atlanta does not receive a bye.
Instead, the Braves will host the National League’s No. 6 seed in a best-of-three Wild Card Series.
If the current standings hold, that would mean an Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies Wild Card Series.
Phillies and Diamondbacks Fighting for Final NL Wild Card
The final National League postseason berth remains up for grabs.
The Philadelphia Phillies currently hold the No. 6 position, but the Arizona Diamondbacks remain alive.
That means Atlanta’s Wild Card opponent has not officially been determined.
Philadelphia needs to finish the job over the final weekend, while Arizona needs to make up ground before the regular season concludes.
