Arch Manning entered college football as one of the most highly anticipated quarterback recruits in recent memory. With his famous football family and status as a top prospect, nearly every major program wanted him.
One school that naturally attracted attention was Tennessee, where his uncle Peyton Manning became a college football legend.
But Arch Manning ultimately chose the Texas Longhorns, committing to Texas in June 2022.

Archie’s grandfather, Archie Manning, has also discussed the connection between Arch and Sarkisian, indicating that the quarterback’s relationship with the Texas coach played an important role in his decision.
Arch Manning Wanted to Help Bring Texas Back
Manning wasn’t necessarily looking for the easiest path to a championship.
Instead, part of Texas’ appeal was the opportunity to help restore one of college football’s most recognizable programs to national prominence.
Manning later explained that he liked the idea of helping “bring Texas back.”
That gave him an opportunity to potentially build his own college football legacy rather than simply joining an established championship machine.
Why Didn’t Arch Manning Choose Tennessee?
Tennessee was always going to be associated with Arch Manning because of Peyton Manning.
Peyton played for the Volunteers from 1994 through 1997 and became one of the greatest quarterbacks in Tennessee football history before beginning his Hall of Fame NFL career.
However, Tennessee was not believed to be among Arch Manning’s primary finalists toward the end of his recruitment.
His recruitment became much more focused on Texas, Alabama and Georgia.
That means Manning’s decision wasn’t necessarily a last-minute choice between Texas and Tennessee. By the final stages of the recruiting process, Texas was competing primarily against Alabama and Georgia for his commitment.
Arch Manning Had the Opportunity to Create His Own Legacy
Choosing Texas also gave Manning something Tennessee couldn’t provide as easily: separation from Peyton’s college legacy.
Had Arch attended Tennessee, comparisons with his uncle would have been unavoidable.
Instead, Texas gave Arch the opportunity to establish his own identity.
The Manning family already had deep connections to other SEC programs as well. Archie Manning and Eli Manning starred at Ole Miss, while Peyton became synonymous with Tennessee.
Arch choosing Texas added another major college football program to the family’s remarkable quarterback history.
Peyton Manning Supported Arch’s Decision
Peyton Manning has indicated that Arch needed to make his own college decision.
That mirrored Peyton’s own experience. Despite his family’s connection to Ole Miss, Peyton chose Tennessee because he believed it was the right destination for him.
Arch essentially followed the same philosophy—just with Texas.
Rather than choosing a school because another Manning played there, he selected the program and coaching staff he personally wanted.
Who Were Arch Manning’s Final College Choices?
While Manning received offers and interest from numerous major programs, the three schools most closely associated with the final stages of his recruitment were:
- Texas
- Alabama
- Georgia
Manning eventually announced his commitment to Texas on June 23, 2022.
He remained committed and signed with the Longhorns as part of their 2023 recruiting class.
Why Arch Manning Ultimately Picked Texas
There wasn’t one single reason Arch Manning chose Texas.
His relationship with Steve Sarkisian, Texas’ offensive system, the opportunity to help elevate the Longhorns and the chance to establish a legacy independent of the rest of the Manning family all contributed to his decision.
Tennessee will always have a special connection to the Manning name because of Peyton.
