Is Odell Beckham Jr. Retiring? What’s Next for OBJ After Giants Release

Posted on September 29, 2026September 29, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Odell Beckham Jr.’s latest stint with the New York Giants has come to an end, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the veteran wide receiver is ready to retire from the NFL.

The New York Giants are releasing Odell Beckham Jr., making the 33-year-old wide receiver a free agent and raising an immediate question among NFL fans: Is Odell Beckham Jr. retiring?

For now, the answer appears to be no.

Is Odell Beckham Jr. Retiring?

There has been no announcement from Beckham indicating that he plans to retire following his release from the Giants.

Instead, reporting surrounding his departure indicates that Beckham hopes to continue his NFL career and find another opportunity where he can receive more playing time.

That means Beckham’s release should be viewed as the end of his latest chapter with the Giants rather than necessarily the end of his NFL career.

Why Did the Giants Release Odell Beckham Jr.?

Beckham’s highly anticipated return to New York did not produce the role many fans might have expected.

Through three games, Beckham played only around 20 offensive snaps. He was targeted just once and finished his Giants stint without recording a reception.

With Beckham receiving such limited playing time, the Giants elected to move on and give the veteran receiver an opportunity to potentially find a larger role elsewhere.

A return to New York’s practice squad also appears unlikely.

What’s Next for Odell Beckham Jr.?

Beckham now becomes a veteran wide receiver available to NFL teams looking for additional depth.

His immediate market could depend heavily on injuries around the league. As the 2026 NFL season progresses, teams inevitably lose receivers to injuries, potentially creating opportunities for experienced free agents.

Beckham could therefore wait for the right situation rather than immediately signing with another organization.

A contender looking for an experienced receiver for the second half of the season could also potentially consider Beckham.

Beckham Is Trying to Extend His NFL Career

Beckham’s career has already included several different NFL stops after becoming one of football’s biggest stars during his original tenure with the Giants.

He entered the league as a first-round selection by New York in the 2014 NFL Draft and quickly became one of the NFL’s most recognizable receivers.

His spectacular one-handed touchdown catch against the Dallas Cowboys during his rookie season became one of the defining plays of his career.

Beckham later played for the Cleveland Browns before joining the Los Angeles Rams during the 2021 season.

He played an important role in the Rams’ run to Super Bowl LVI, catching a touchdown in the championship game before suffering a serious knee injury.

Beckham subsequently continued his career with the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins before eventually returning to the Giants.

Could This Still Be the End for OBJ?

Retirement remains a possibility for any veteran player who struggles to find another NFL opportunity, particularly at Beckham’s age.

However, there is an important difference between being an unsigned free agent and being retired.

As of September 29, 2026, Beckham has not announced his retirement, and the expectation following his Giants release is that he would like to continue playing.

Whether another team provides that opportunity remains to be seen.

Is Odell Beckham Jr. a Free Agent?

Yes. Following his release from the Giants, Beckham is once again available for teams seeking veteran wide receiver help.

His combination of experience, postseason history and name recognition could generate interest, particularly if a team suffers injuries at the receiver position.

The bigger question will be whether Beckham can find a team willing to give him a meaningful offensive role.

Bottom Line

Odell Beckham Jr. is not retiring from the NFL — at least not yet.

The Giants’ decision to release him ends his latest run with the franchise, but Beckham reportedly hopes to continue his playing career.

For now, OBJ enters the next stage of his career as a veteran free agent waiting for another NFL opportunity.
