New York Yankees fans hoping to see Aaron Judge in the lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays will have to wait.
Aaron Judge is not playing today, Saturday, October 3, 2026, when the New York Yankees face the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the American League Division Series (ALDS).
More importantly, Judge is not on New York’s 26-man ALDS roster, meaning the Yankees will be without their star slugger for the entire best-of-five series against Tampa Bay.
Why Isn’t Aaron Judge Playing Today?
Judge is continuing his recovery from a right calf/soleus strain suffered in September.
Although Judge has made progress in his rehabilitation and has participated in baseball activities, running and baserunning have remained important hurdles in his return.
Rather than activate Judge before he is ready, the Yankees elected to leave him off their ALDS roster.
Can Aaron Judge Play Later in the Yankees-Rays ALDS?
No. Because Judge was left off the Yankees’ ALDS roster, he is ineligible to play during the entire series against the Rays.
That includes Games 1 through 5, if the series goes the full five games.
The Yankees would have an opportunity to change their postseason roster before the next round. Therefore, if New York advances past Tampa Bay and Judge is medically ready, he could potentially return for the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
Aaron Judge Injury Status
Judge’s rehabilitation will be closely watched throughout the ALDS.
Being able to hit is only part of the equation. The Yankees need Judge to demonstrate that he can run, accelerate, stop and handle the demands of baserunning and playing defense without significantly increasing the risk of aggravating the injury.
His progress during the Yankees-Rays series could determine whether an ALCS return becomes realistic.
Yankees Must Face Rays Without Aaron Judge
Judge’s absence creates a major challenge for the Yankees.
New York will have to replace one of baseball’s most dangerous offensive players during a short postseason series in which every plate appearance can make a difference.
The Yankees will need additional production throughout their lineup as they attempt to advance without Judge.
