Joe Espada won’t return as manager of the Houston Astros after his contract expires at the end of the month, the team announced Wednesday.
The Astros were swept by the Chicago White Sox in the American League wild-card round after winning the AL West with an 81-81 record. It was the first time in MLB history a division-winning club didn’t have a winning record.
Following the postseason exit, Espada said he’d “absolutely” like to return as Houston’s skipper.
Astros owner Jim Crane and Espada were set to discuss the latter’s contract status.
“Jim has been very clear about his process and when he wants to have that conversation,” Espada said last week. “I respect the process and how blessed I’ve been of being here for over nine years and experienced so many division titles, championship series, World Series, winning one. As a bench coach, as a manager, I have witnessed so many great moments, so obviously I would like to continue enjoying those moments.”
