Baker Mayfield Full Participant in Buccaneers Practice: Positive Thumb Injury Update for Week 7

Posted on October 21, 2026October 21, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield was listed as a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The update marks a notable step in Mayfield’s recovery from a dislocated right thumb and raises questions about his availability for Sunday’s NFC South matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

Mayfield suffered the injury late in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings and has not played since. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels has started in his place over the past three games. While the Buccaneers entered the week preparing as if Daniels would start again, Mayfield’s full participation on Wednesday is the most encouraging practice report he has received during his absence.

Mayfield’s Thumb Injury Timeline

Mayfield dislocated his throwing-hand thumb on September 27. Initial estimates pointed to a minimum three-week absence, and he did not practice during the team’s Week 6 preparations. An MRI showed no microfractures or significant ligament/tendon damage, and he did not require surgery, but grip strength and the ability to securely hold the football remained the key hurdles to his return.

On Monday, head coach Todd Bowles said Mayfield was expected to practice on Wednesday and that the team would evaluate him throughout the week. Reporters noted Mayfield was on the field throwing while wearing a white glove on his right hand—his first practice appearance since the injury.

What Full Participation Means for Sunday

In NFL practice terminology, a full participant designation means the player took part in all normal drills without restriction. For a quarterback recovering from a thumb injury, this typically indicates he was able to grip, hand off, and throw without major limitation during the session.

That said, one full practice does not guarantee Mayfield will start against the Panthers. Bowles and the Buccaneers have repeatedly stated they will continue evaluating him Thursday and Friday. The team’s initial plan remains preparing Daniels as the starter, though Mayfield’s progress could change that calculus by the end of the week. The official Friday injury report will be the clearest indicator of his game status.

Impact on the Buccaneers and Fantasy Football

A potential Mayfield return would restore Tampa Bay’s experienced starting quarterback for a divisional road game. Daniels has shown flashes but has also turned the ball over (five interceptions in limited action). Mayfield’s presence would likely improve the offense’s efficiency and red-zone production, though any lingering grip issues could still limit deep-ball accuracy or force him to play through discomfort.

For fantasy managers, the situation remains fluid. Those rostering Mayfield should monitor Thursday’s practice report closely. Daniels remains a viable streaming option if Mayfield is ruled out or limited, but his value drops significantly if Mayfield is cleared to start.

What to Watch Next

  • Thursday and Friday practice reports: Limited or full participation both days would strengthen Mayfield’s case to play.
  • Official Friday injury report: Look for “questionable,” “doubtful,” or no designation.
  • Coach Todd Bowles’ comments: The Buccaneers typically provide clearer direction by midweek.
  • Game-day decision: Even if Mayfield is active, the team could still start Daniels depending on how Mayfield looks in walkthroughs.

Mayfield has a history of playing through injuries, but a thumb issue on his throwing hand is uniquely challenging for a quarterback. Wednesday’s full participation is the strongest signal yet that he is progressing toward a return. Whether that happens as soon as Sunday against Carolina will depend on how his hand responds over the next two practices.

Stay updated on the Buccaneers’ injury report and practice participation as the week progresses for the latest on Baker Mayfield’s status.
