Stamford High School football coach Donny Panapada resigned during an October 23, 2026, game against Fairfield Warde following confrontational exchanges with players, according to the school’s principal.
The Connecticut team trailed 30–0 at halftime and went on to lose 42–14. Panapada remained at the venue but did not coach during the second half, according to Patch’s reporting on the school’s message to families.
Why Did Stamford’s Football Coach Resign During the Game?
Principal Matthew Forker told football families that Panapada demonstrated poor judgment during exchanges with student athletes in the first half.
During that period, Panapada announced his resignation to both his players and athletic director Chris Passamano. His decision left Stamford’s remaining coaching staff to handle the second half.
The school has not publicly detailed the exact words exchanged or the specific incident that triggered the confrontation. Available reporting therefore does not establish that the halftime deficit itself caused Panapada to resign.
Will Donny Panapada Return as Head Coach?
Panapada’s resignation remains in effect.
Passamano met with Panapada, coaching staff members and several players the morning after the game to understand what happened. Following those conversations, school officials concluded there was no viable path for him to withdraw his resignation and return to the role.
Forker also met with Panapada on Monday, October 26. According to the principal, Panapada acknowledged his poor judgment and expressed remorse.
In his message to families, Forker said the public confrontations, in-game resignation and decision to stop coaching fell short of the expectations for someone leading student athletes. Panapada declined to comment when contacted by the Stamford Advocate.
Who Will Coach Stamford Football Now?
Stamford will not appoint an individual interim head coach for the remainder of the 2026 season. Instead, the existing coaching staff will collectively assume head coaching responsibilities, Patch reported.
The Black Knights were 3–3 following the Fairfield Warde loss.
Panapada’s Tenure Included a Playoff Breakthrough
Panapada became Stamford’s head football coach in 2022. His tenure included a significant achievement in 2023, when the Black Knights reached the CIAC Class LL playoffs for the first time in 28 years.
Stamford finished that season 7–4 after losing to Greenwich in the quarterfinals. The program then recorded consecutive 1–9 seasons before opening the 2026 campaign.
School officials also acknowledged messages from families who supported Panapada and described his positive influence on their children. Forker recognized those relationships and contributions while maintaining that the resignation would stand. Source: Patch
