USC Upsets No. 2 Ohio State
USC’s 30–18 victory over Ohio State was the highest-ranked upset on Saturday’s scoreboard. The Trojans finished with a 12-point margin, handing the second-ranked Buckeyes a result that could affect their position in the next poll.
Ohio State was one of six ranked teams beaten by unranked opponents during the slate, joining SMU, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin and Arizona’s fellow ranked-game losers elsewhere on the scoreboard.
No. 1 Miami Survives North Carolina
Miami held off North Carolina 38–35 to escape with a three-point victory. With Ohio State losing, the Hurricanes avoided an upset of their own and protected their place atop the game-day rankings heading into the next poll.
Indiana also faced a close contest, beating Minnesota 23–16. BYU matched that seven-point winning margin with a 27–20 victory over Arizona State.
Georgia, Notre Dame and Utah Earn Convincing Wins
Georgia defeated No. 17 Florida 27–8 in one of the day’s two matchups between ranked teams. In the other, No. 13 Texas Tech beat No. 22 Arizona 34–26.
Notre Dame handled Navy 35–13, while Utah scored 49 points in a 24-point win over Cincinnati. UCLA shut out Nevada 27–0, Texas beat Mississippi State 31–3, and Ole Miss defeated Auburn 45–15.
Wake Forest posted the largest winning margin among the ranked teams listed, routing Virginia 51–7.
Close Finishes and Ranked-Team Losses
Boise State edged Texas State 46–45 in the narrowest result involving a Top 25 team. Iowa State and Oklahoma State combined for 100 points, with the Cyclones winning 51–49.
Syracuse beat SMU 30–27, and Oregon defeated Northwestern 34–26. Iowa delivered another emphatic result, shutting out Wisconsin 30–0.
What the Week 9 Results Mean for the Rankings
Ohio State’s loss creates an opportunity for teams below the Buckeyes to move up, while Miami, Georgia and Indiana each added another win. The defeats for several other ranked teams could also produce movement near the bottom of the Top 25.
Any ranking changes will depend on the next poll. These results alone do not establish new rankings or College Football Playoff positions.
