Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson could miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season after suffering a serious right thumb injury that requires surgery.
Jackson has been placed on injured reserve, ruling him out for at least four games. Although the Ravens have not officially declared his season over, the injury raises significant concerns about whether the two-time NFL MVP will return this year.
What Happened to Lamar Jackson?
Jackson suffered a right thumb injury on his throwing hand during the Ravens’ November 1 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
The injury occurred on Baltimore’s first offensive play, forcing the Ravens to evaluate their quarterback situation.
Further medical evaluation determined that Jackson would require surgery, creating uncertainty surrounding his recovery timeline and availability for the remainder of the regular season.
Is Lamar Jackson Out for the Rest of the 2026 Season?
Lamar Jackson has not officially been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 NFL season.
However, his injury could be season-ending.
Ravens head coach Jesse Minter has acknowledged the possibility that Jackson may not return this season.
Baltimore placed Jackson on injured reserve, meaning he must miss a minimum of four games before becoming eligible to return.
His eventual availability will depend on his recovery following surgery and the medical team’s evaluation.
How Long Will Lamar Jackson Be Out?
The Ravens have not announced a definitive return date for Jackson.
Because the injury affects the thumb on his throwing hand, his recovery will be particularly important for his ability to grip and accurately throw the football.
Jackson’s return will depend on several factors, including the success of his surgery, rehabilitation progress and medical clearance.
The four-game injured reserve requirement represents the minimum absence, not necessarily his expected recovery time.
Who Will Replace Lamar Jackson as Ravens Quarterback?
With Jackson sidelined, rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano is expected to take over as Baltimore’s starting quarterback.
Fagnano is expected to start when the Ravens face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, November 5.
Baltimore is also dealing with an injury to backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, further complicating its quarterback depth chart.
The Ravens have signed quarterback Kedon Slovis to provide additional depth.
Ravens Quarterback Situation

What Lamar Jackson’s Injury Means for the Ravens
Jackson’s potential season-ending absence would represent a significant challenge for Baltimore.
The two-time NFL MVP is central to the Ravens’ offensive identity, combining his passing ability with exceptional mobility and playmaking skills.
Without Jackson, Baltimore could face major adjustments in several areas, including offensive play-calling, quarterback rushing production, passing efficiency and overall offensive consistency.
The Ravens will need their running game, offensive line and defense to help compensate for the loss of their franchise quarterback.
When Do the Ravens Play Next?
The Baltimore Ravens are scheduled to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The matchup is expected to provide an early look at Baltimore’s offense without Jackson under center.
