Who Is Larry Berg? Meet the Incoming MLS Commissioner Leading Major League Soccer’s Next Era

Posted on August 5, 2026August 5, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Major League Soccer has officially named Larry Berg as its next commissioner, ushering in a new chapter for one of North America’s fastest-growing sports leagues. Best known as a successful private equity executive and co-managing owner of Los Angeles FC (LAFC), Berg will succeed Don Garber on January 1, 2027, following a transition period that begins in September 2026.

With decades of business experience and a proven track record in professional soccer, Berg is expected to guide MLS through major milestones, including future media rights negotiations, continued player development, and the league’s global expansion.

Who Is Larry Berg?

Larry Berg is an American businessman, investor, and sports executive who has spent much of his career in private equity before becoming one of the key figures behind LAFC’s success.

Before entering professional soccer, Berg held senior leadership roles at Apollo Global Management, one of the world’s largest private equity firms. He later joined 26North, another investment company founded by sports owner Josh Harris.

His extensive background in finance, strategic investments, and business operations helped establish his reputation as a leader capable of managing large organizations and driving long-term growth.

Larry Berg’s Role With LAFC

Berg became one of the founding co-managing owners of Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), which joined Major League Soccer in 2018.

Since entering MLS, LAFC has quickly emerged as one of the league’s premier franchises, earning success both on and off the field.

During Berg’s tenure as an owner, LAFC has achieved:

  • MLS Cup championship (2022)
  • Supporters’ Shield titles (2019 and 2022)
  • Consistent playoff appearances
  • Strong attendance and commercial success
  • One of the league’s most recognizable global brands

His ownership experience extends beyond MLS, with investments in European soccer clubs including AS Roma in Italy and Swansea City in Wales.

To avoid conflicts of interest, Berg is expected to divest his ownership stake in LAFC before officially becoming MLS commissioner.

Why MLS Chose Larry Berg

MLS owners selected Berg following an extensive search process that reportedly included more than 100 candidates.

League owners viewed his unique combination of business expertise and soccer ownership experience as ideal for leading MLS through its next phase of growth.

Among the biggest opportunities awaiting Berg are:

  • Negotiating the league’s next media rights agreement after the current Apple deal expires in 2029.
  • Increasing MLS revenue through new commercial partnerships.
  • Enhancing player development and roster-building strategies.
  • Expanding the league’s global profile following the momentum generated by the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Larry Berg’s Vision for MLS

During his introductory press conference, Berg outlined several priorities that will define his tenure.

Growing MLS Media Revenue

Berg believes Major League Soccer has significant untapped potential when it comes to broadcast rights.

He described future media negotiations as an opportunity to partner with companies that can help shape the league’s future while expanding the reach of MLS competitions, including Leagues Cup and the league’s evolving playoff format.

Improving the League’s Talent

Another major focus will be strengthening the quality of players throughout MLS.

Berg said he intends to continue evaluating the league’s roster rules, salary cap structure, youth development programs, and player acquisition strategies to ensure MLS remains competitive while developing future stars.

Although he hopes Lionel Messi remains in the league for years to come, Berg emphasized that MLS must continue producing and attracting elite talent regardless of any individual player.

No Plans for Promotion and Relegation

Berg also addressed one of the sport’s most debated topics.

While acknowledging that promotion and relegation has appeal for many fans, he stated that he does not believe the system is the right fit for Major League Soccer and does not expect it to be introduced during his tenure.

When Does Larry Berg Become MLS Commissioner?

Larry Berg will officially join Major League Soccer on September 1, 2026, before assuming the commissioner position on January 1, 2027.

Outgoing commissioner Don Garber will remain involved as chairman through 2027 to help ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Looking Ahead

Larry Berg inherits an MLS that is stronger than ever following the success of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and continued expansion across North America. With expertise in business strategy, investment, and soccer ownership, Berg is expected to lead the league into its next era by pursuing larger media deals, improving player development, and strengthening MLS’s position in the global soccer landscape.

As Major League Soccer prepares for new broadcast negotiations, continued commercial growth, and increased international visibility, Larry Berg’s leadership could play a defining role in shaping the future of soccer in North America.
