Miami Dolphins Quarterback Depth Chart After Quinn Ewers Trade

Posted on August 29, 2026August 29, 2026 by Santiago Leon

The Miami Dolphins’ quarterback room has a new look after the team agreed to trade Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick.

With Ewers leaving Miami, Malik Willis remains firmly positioned as the Dolphins’ starting quarterback. Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski are the other quarterbacks currently in the room, although their roles may not become official until Miami completes its final roster moves.

Updated Miami Dolphins Quarterback Depth Chart

The Dolphins’ projected quarterback depth chart following the trade is:

  1. Malik Willis — Starter
  2. Cam Miller — Backup
  3. Mark Gronowski — Third string

This order should be considered unofficial. Miami could still sign, claim or trade for another quarterback as teams make their final roster cuts.

Malik Willis Remains Miami’s Starting Quarterback

The Ewers trade does not create a quarterback competition at the top of the depth chart. Willis was already considered the presumptive starter entering the 2026 season.

Miami signed the former Green Bay Packers backup to a three-year contract during the offseason. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has indicated that the organization views Willis as more than a short-term solution.

Willis brings a strong arm and significant rushing ability to head coach Jeff Hafley’s offense. During his time behind Jordan Love in Green Bay, he demonstrated that he could efficiently operate an NFL offense when called upon.

The Dolphins are scheduled to open their season against the Las Vegas Raiders on September 13, with Willis expected to start.

Cam Miller Moves Into the Backup Role

Cam Miller appears to be the immediate beneficiary of the Ewers trade.

Before the deal, Miami’s quarterback order was Willis, Ewers, Miller and Gronowski. Removing Ewers from that group naturally moves Miller into the projected No. 2 position.

Miller joined Miami after beginning his NFL career with the Raiders. The former North Dakota State quarterback was highly productive in college, finishing his career with 9,720 passing yards, 81 passing touchdowns and another 48 scores on the ground.

His dual-threat background could make him a logical backup for Willis because Miami would not need to completely redesign its offense if Miller entered a game.

However, Miller’s spot is not guaranteed. The Dolphins could pursue a more experienced backup after other teams reduce their rosters.

Mark Gronowski Becomes the No. 3 Quarterback

Mark Gronowski now projects as Miami’s third quarterback.

The Dolphins brought Gronowski back after injuries affected the position during the preseason. Like Willis and Miller, he offers mobility in addition to his passing ability.

Gronowski remains a developmental option, and Miami will have to decide whether to carry three quarterbacks on the active roster or attempt to place one on the practice squad.

Why Did the Dolphins Trade Quinn Ewers?

Ewers entered the offseason as the only returning quarterback in Miami’s room after making three starts during his rookie season. He completed 66% of his passes and threw three touchdowns against three interceptions across 83 attempts.

His second preseason was interrupted by a groin injury suffered against the Washington Commanders. Ewers completed one of eight passes for 27 yards with an interception in that game and did not play in Miami’s following two preseason contests.

Jacksonville’s willingness to send Miami a 2028 sixth-round selection gave the Dolphins an opportunity to receive future draft capital while clarifying their quarterback hierarchy.

Could Miami Add Another Quarterback?

The Dolphins should not necessarily be expected to enter the regular season with only Willis, Miller and Gronowski.

Final roster cuts will place several quarterbacks on waivers or the open market. Miami could target an experienced veteran capable of immediately serving as Willis’ backup.

The organization could also explore another trade if a quarterback it values becomes available. Until the Dolphins finalize their 53-man roster, Miller’s projected promotion to QB2 remains subject to change.

What the Quinn Ewers Trade Means for Miami

The trade reinforces Willis’ status as the clear leader of Miami’s offense. It also creates an immediate opportunity for Miller and Gronowski to earn larger roles.

For now, the Dolphins’ quarterback depth chart projects as Willis first, Miller second and Gronowski third. The top spot appears settled, but the competition behind Willis may continue through final roster cuts and into the opening week of the season.
