49ers release Darqueze Dennard
49ers announced on Monday that it has released Darqueze Dennard, who was in a competition to be the team’s starting nickel back. Dennard is a former first-round pick who was selected 24th overall by the Bengals in 2014. After six seasons in Cincinnati, Dennard moved on to Atlanta for the 2020 season before jumping ship to the Giants in 2021.
After being released by the Giants in December, the 49ers quickly picked him up and even though he was only with the team for the final two weeks of the season, he did crack the roster for one game, playing in San Francisco’s regular season finale against the Rams.
49ers cut DT Robert Nkemdiche
The San Francisco 49ers released former first-round draft pick Robert Nkemdiche to meet Tuesday’s NFL-mandated 85-man roster cut.
The release marks the latest career blow for the veteran defensive tackle, whom the Arizona Cardinals selected with the 29th pick of the 2016 draft. In six seasons since being drafted, Nkemdiche has played in 38 games, including six starts for three different teams. The 49ers would have been his fourth team.
- Patriots have place CB Malcolm Butler on IR The New England Patriots placed veteran cornerback Malcolm Butler on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season and comeback attempt with the franchise where he became a Super Bowl hero seven years ago.Butler, 32, suffered a hip injury, a source said. Butler had started in the Patriots’ preseason opener Thursday, playing 23 snaps and recovering a fumble, but had not practiced since.
- Dolphins place TE Adam Shaheen on IR
The Miami Dolphins placed tight end Adam Shaheen on injured reserve Tuesday after he failed a physical last week because of a preexisting knee injury, which voided a trade with the Houston Texans.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Tuesday that Shaheen will undergo surgery after getting more opinions on his knee and the organization is “100% supportive” of his decision.
