4-Star WR Javon Baker Rolls with the Tide

After visits to Alabama, Arkansas, and a pending visit to Georgia Tech, the much heralded 4-star WR from Powder Springs, Georgia, Javon Baker, has chosen the Crimson Tide. He made his official announcement this morning after originally committing to the Tide in November of 2018. Although he took other visits, his commitment to Saban was never wavering.

So, why Alabama? An obvious answer would be based on the recent success of Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Devonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle. The Crimson Tide in recent years have transitioned from “Runningback U” to “Wide Receiver U” seemingly. That type of appeal played a large role in the 4-star recruit’s decision making. “Just how their receivers are going to the league and how they’ve changed their offense. They have the best receivers there,” said Baker. Javon isn’t the only one to share this belief. Early enrollees Traeshon Holden and Thaiu Jones-Bell from the 2020 class have already got a head start on keeping this tradition going.

With departures by Ruggs and Jeudy to the NFL, Tide fans have been wondering who will step up in their absence. It appears they may have their answer with Javon Baker and company. If confirmation is needed, look no further than 247 Sports national analyst Charles Power’s assessment of Baker, “Lean, square-shouldered build that should aid in putting on mass once he gets to the next level. Tests as a solid athlete at this juncture with short area burst being his best trait in that department. Is a strong-handed pass catcher who plays with a confidence when the ball is in the air. Is at his best in contested catch situations. Has excelled in camp and 7-on-7 settings over the course of his high school career as a result. Also is a strong route-runner at this stage and polished with his ability to get in and out of his breaks in a variety of concepts. Can improve his straight line speed and ability to separate vertically. Projects as a Power Five starter with the upside of developing into a NFL Draft selection.” In other words, look out! Welcome to the Crimson Tide family Javon.
