Yeah, I’ve been a lifelong Pittsburgh Penguins fan since the days of Mario Lemieux as a kid and now you know, now with Sidney Crosby this my I’ve gone to many penguin kings and Buffalo and Toronto, but this is my first time actually went down to Pittsburgh for a game. I was fun to you know, take in a game and the sights and sounds of PPG arena and be with fellow penguins fans

was more of a winning, you know, a winning tradition. You know, they sold out think about 10 years straight games. You know, the city is in love with a team. Pittsburgh Pirates, you know, they’re a team for many, many years struggle, you know, post barry bonds. Bobby Binya, they, you know, they want about 20 years without even having a winning record. They have a beautiful stadium. PNC Park, right. And remember, there is one of the best places to watch a baseball here in Santiago, the audience, you know, there’s no place by there, I think in North America, but you know, you will look at a lot of those games, you know, during the week San Diego and you can see a lot of empty seats doesn’t mean they don’t care about the team. I just don’t think they have the luck that they do. Especially as You know, the Steelers are by far number one and they’ve been I’m one because the Steelers nation reaches beyond Pittsburgh but you know to the whole country you know you go to many games you know Rogan is Steelers. Now you can see the terrible towels. What helps the penguins is that they have some superstar Sidney Crosby and getting more can you know the kind of drives the fans, you know, fanship but you know, the pangolin or the pirates do have a special place. You know, they were types about people back in the 1970s and 80s and Roberto Clemente Willie Stargell, those teams feel they had, they were big in Pittsburgh, and they might things might have been a little bit different. The question to answer back then, but right now go Steelers, penguins, pirates and they’re probably University of Pittsburgh.

Now obviously the pirates even though they have low fan base on the weekdays, but it’s probably still better than demine Marlins right?

Oh, sure, yeah, yeah, I think you know, they have a history and all and like I said, it’s a great place to watch baseball. You know, you know when the team is winning, you know, they’ll sell up but you know when then it’s kind of hit or miss fan base. You know, when the fans I can tell me they’re not gonna show up. When Marlins when they’re winning, they still don’t show up.

Now is is baseball a dying sport or not really.

It’s more of a niche sport now than it was I think, you know, we we kind of saw you as a national pastime but, you know, in the summer, it’s big because, you know, there’s not a whole lot going on, you know, football, as much as it tries to be, you know, 12 months 12 months sport, there’s still a little bit of a gap, you know, June and July where not a lot is happening after the draft before training camp. And as well We’re baseball kind of shine or baseball you know fall behind this beginning season you know yeah March Madness you know NBA NHL playoffs you know then it takes me shades and then as soon as football starts it goes back to you know the backburner you know during the end of the season the playoffs when you really shouldn’t be Gil Corbett I mean baseball wishes it still had you know the coverage that I get during the summertime it’s got you know this kind of a lot of followers and yeah that’s an easy scored the fall you know, you don’t necessarily have to watch all the games but you can still fall it in the you know, one of the most best parts about baseball is kind of the winter the hot stones I call you know, all the moves that teams make you know, the additions I enjoy You know, I’m a huge Red Sox fan doesn’t mean I watch all hundred and 62 games now. But you know what, but I you know, I subscribed to you know, the internet were excellent coverage of it. whatever I’m doing my family and I get home the last three or four innings of most games, too that’s good enough

yeah I mean typically like the best time to watch it is like the like go into the to like the seventh inning right is that like the best time to start?

Yeah you know and luckily here not just saying you know we got a baseball team you know that there’s nothing better on the summer afternoon or night so you know, you know sit and watch baseball you know, I got a little one to see the place to bring hand to go run around. I didn’t Yeah, that’s a something about based on summer that just awesome. But you know, the future of baseball is great. You know, it’s a slow moving sport. You know, this generation, you know, we’ll like to be entertained at all times.

I do have a prediction. I really do think MLS will be become bigger than Major League Baseball. They will not surprise NFL or NBA, but I know at least that’s MLB

NFL, you know, when you were talking about the pyramid is for Santiago, NFL is not untouchable? Yeah. Everybody

I know. I’m involved with the industry. I know it. Yeah.

And, you know, it’s slipped a little bit, but last year, you know, the ratings back up, you know, with a lot of things, you know, people don’t like to mix politics and sports, you know, if we can keep them separated a little bit, you know, especially in football, you know, the viewership will be up the problem of football, the future football is that our young kids playing football, our best athletes playing football, you know, with a concussion next 15 years about what happens with that. And regarding all the NBA kind of centered itself, as you know, the second floor kind of standing alone. It’s doing very well you know, maybe the, you know, the National viewership is a little bit down this year for whatever reason. But you know, the local markets are doing well. So if you Doing well, you know, and when certain teams are on, you know, it’s going to draw Unfortunately, the problem the NBA is that we’re so around coverage is only about what 10 teams Santiago we got. When’s the last time you popped in the game and watch the Charlotte Hornets play? You know, cuz most A lot of it was, you know, some of those bottom dwellers and you know, especially in the Eastern Conference conferences, you know, I mean this.

Yeah, there was there has been debate, there has been debate combined east and west together and make it into one table. But,

yeah, it’s time to make it more competitive. I don’t know how realistic that is. You know,

Yes, and that would be the issue. I think there’s enough town to go around for sure. You know, it says to unfortunately, even with some of these teams, you know, they build up the superstars for three or four years you know and any about ready you can’t get these guys to sign long term deals because they want to go play with other players and big markets

know, it’s there like a huge sports backer. But anyways, we could get into rabbit trails. Let’s go into the main topic of the show college basketball. Ryan, give us an update. I know, correct me if I’m wrong. There’s some conference tournaments in progress or about to begin what’s happening.

So we’re so in the calendar, college basketball, we’re trying you know, we’re one week left in the official regular season. So you know, your bigger conferences, your power five conferences. A couple others will still be playing regular season games up till Sunday on some of our smaller conferences are starting their conference tournament. So you know, as I Today, you know, Atlantic sign tech, South American east. So they’ll be starting their championship games this weekend. So we’ll start, you know, putting, you know, putting in our feelers 68 you know, starting Sunday afternoon with the Big South championship and then Atlantic sign so you know, what we’ll know, you know, by, you know, and then as the week goes on and what are some of our smaller championship games Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then you get into Wednesday, you know, you’re really talking about your big your Big Conference Championship tournament starting the ACC they can pass you see, so they kind of finish up next weekend, you know, leading up to Selection Sunday

question from the audience. Does the power five and football also translate into college basketball?

Ryan Christa
Not necessarily. You know, we thought you know that this is I think the strongest signers of the second strongest basketball conference deal and those had tea and Showtime they were don’t even have football at their schools and hold crais and private and mark at Georgetown, those seals they make up the the east, you know, and I think they’re the second best conference, if not the best behind the big tent in Atlantic time is a strong basketball conference and No, they don’t have most of those games. They’ll have football conferences, so doesn’t totally translate You know, I think in the mindset of you know, viewership and people watching, you know, the big conference teams have, you know, bigger fan bases. But you know, you know, let’s just take kids I got Santiago, that’s a power five conference and and you know, they got St. Mary’s on their conference and BYU well They play. They’re not always a household name. They kind of make up the core of college basketball.

Okay, so let’s go into each of the conference and you tell me the top two teams, or maybe three of these conference Big East. Who do you like from the Big East?

Ryan Christa
The hottest team, I’ll tell you, the hottest team right now may not be the best chance. And that’s the Providence friars. And then I got a team that has a horrible offseason and non conference conferences and you know, with really little, no chance of breaking the conference Chairman, other than doing what they’ve done right now. And they’ve literally, you know, they won six or seven in a row, all against ranked teams. So they’re the hottest team right now in the conference. So I’m still kind of even after that. They’re not even firmly into the conference or kind of on the good side of the bubble. You know, there one better A week away from being on the outside and then we’ll take you know, I think the best team is Creighton, you know, because you know they have a very explosive offense they shoot the ball well

and you know the second best would probably Villanova you know, typical j right team probably not a championship contender as a team they were a couple years ago but a solid team they can definitely make it to the sweet 16 and your sleeper the chairman is a March at Golden Eagles because they have the nation’s leading scorer and Marcus Hollis. There you have it. Let me read you guys a statement so far. Seton Hall, cretin, Villanova, Providence, Marquette, Xavier Butler, which I actually saw someone. I actually saw someone wearing a butler sweatshirt this past weekend, Georgetown, St. John’s and the Paul so you say Creighton is not the they’re not the best, but they’re the sexiest.

Yeah, I see. Okay, and they, they start off kinda sorta That conference a lot of a robot, but last couple weeks really coming on strong, you know, typical black mcdermitt team, you know, they’re spread you out there shoot the ball good balls in a point guard is a very good player. You know, I think they have the most depth on the team, you know, you said a team there at C Hall. And you might have some people out there saying, Well, you know, the highest ranked team in the conference. Well, yeah, but I really think they might have one setback play in my power overall. But that’s why I think the problem is that they’re just not deep enough. You know, they’ve played a great schedule. They’re a good overall.

Yeah, okay. So let’s go to big 12 if it’s, you know, yeah. Big toll has Kansas. It is a big deal. They got Kansas first Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma. TCU. And the list goes on. Ryan, who do you like from this conference?

Ryan Christa
Well, you know, Santiago, when we talk about football, What do we talk about we talk about often and the lack of defense It couldn’t have been more one at when we talk about big well basketball to this is a powerhouse of these types of basketball you know to Kansas and Baylor the two best teams in the conference the grind it out I you know, I think Candace is a little bit overall You know, they’re more talented for sure that Baylor clinic has a bouquet might be the national Player of the Year down low. They got great golf, play, you know, they the same Derek might be the best defensive player in the country, you know, their point guard and Baylor they, you know, very team oriented guy, Jews might be the coach of the year and all of college basketball, putting a bunch of, you know, average, you know, not average but good basketball players and thinking it’s a great basketball camp, and no one’s better that that college than Scott Drew. Kansas and Baylor Kansas, I believe according to history, they’re the ones that have a rich basketball history, right?

okay. Yeah, that’s the one I think the invention or the formulation of college or basketball in itself. The big 10 a conference where they do well in football and basketball. Maryland, Michigan State, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn State Iowa, Ohio State Michigan records Purdue Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska Northwestern. I believe Ryan is very familiar with this conference. Tell me what do you think about it so far?

Ryan Christa
You said the last three teams you said Minnesota, Nebraska Northwestern. Those are teams that no chance of making a tournament. The rest of those 11 teams are all either in the tournament or on the bubble of Santiago. They may not have a national championship contender, but not a definite league. Awesome, you know, it almost 30 years that they struggle on the road and they don’t have very much often at home that team is

why now why was making them different this year than the other years?

Ryan Christa
They got some older players. You know, this is kind of a team that’s been building for a couple years. They don’t have any superstars. But they play well together, you know, and they make timely baskets. Unfortunately, they don’t haven’t been explosive up and make those plays. You need to make them consistently on the road and that might leave them out of the tournament. But that’s putting them on the ball going out because I went all their games at home and unfortunately lose all home on the road. But tonight, I believe they have Michigan State coming to the rack. That’s a huge game for you know, they got away. But when you talk about the best teams in the comment, share by talking about the Michigan Wolverines, who I think ended up at one point number two a foreign country after they the jargon the battle for Atlantis and then I delivered Kissinger their limit a premier player, you know, they kind of changed but they’re kind of riding back up. Well how they got the number five or 64, losing seven out of nine and you know, to start the conference season they look like

so so you’re saying there’s a good probability chance to one of these teams in the big 10 to win the whole thing.

they take all those information is that another committee who goes over all the teams and yelled out going to put in, you know, there’s 30 you know, 34 I think it’s 3430 or 44, LRS 34 conference winners. And just so you know, they’re gonna take the 34 best teams in the conference tournament into the field.

It can’t come down to committee, but obviously there’s more open spots in college football, of course. Yeah.

I think there’s 130 teams for four spots and we have 618 for 330 Teams a lot of college basketball there is

there is okay. So Maryland and Michigan State they’re obviously on the top are they’re a powerhouse unstoppable teams. Where do you thoughts?

Ryan Christa
Michigan State is the number one. You know they got some injuries early on, you know they have got everybody back. But Kashi Swenson the point guard is, you know, one of the best players in college basketball right now, you know, they didn’t have the consistency that teams you know, the you know, the media today they’re the beginning of season one you got a good point guard like that, you know, and the team’s overall toughness. They’re going to be a tough team, you know, to win, you know, the, the diamond bars 13 they can get to the Final Four Marilyn Anthony Collin and Jalen Smith is, you know, probably the best tool in the comp and conference but They’re promised that they start really spoiling every game or they give up a really big run. So they usually crush, you know, they used to get by the lower profile teams and conference, but they seem to be struggling against some of the upper echelon of the conference. You know, because they just give up a big run some point of every game so they gotta close that up in March.

The Dark Horse. I’m gonna you know, I’m gonna go back to them. I’m gonna say Michigan. Is this getting healthy? They’re not gonna be gonna be probably anywhere from a six to nine. See, but I don’t know how they do in the conference tournament.

But the way the bottom I mean, I mean, wow. Really sorry about that. I guess so. I mean, okay.

Injuries play a big part and sports and of course college basketball. ACC got Louisville FSU. Wow. something positive from that school, Duke, Virginia, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Clemson, NC State Boston College Ulemas all the way towards the last three. Ryan, what’s up with this conference? I know ACC has had a good basketball history, but will they do it again this year? Yes, well, it looks like if I see FSU number two, that’s not a good sign.

They don’t have any number one contenders right now. Louisville I think I think the best team at the conference

but it’s not saying much. Yeah.

But as I said, Elena gonna get four teams and most likely I don’t think NC State’s gonna get in. So you haven’t I mean FSU FSU is probably playing the most consistent. Well x vs. FSU is that they just, they all kind of typical FSU team, they all look the same the players all have the same longing, long, athletic players who can all the same. But you know, the problem with FSU is they usually lack the shooters and that’s kind of the finest team but they’re not getting stops and turnovers. You know, they’re hard to they don’t score very easily do just just having consistency issue especially last couple weeks. You know, they’re great one game and then you know, they all fill out the Wake Forest after going at nine point leader that may last kind of underneath like so and Louisville. You know, we think they’re on top of the world and then you know, one week they lose both the home game and I mean backpack road games to Georgia

they got a great great coach in Chris Mack so they’re building something special there i think you know they can keep us alive and I think they will I don’t think I lose very much the NBA Draft you know they’re gonna be a tough out there next couple years.

Okay let’s go on what Yes guys we will we will get into Liberty basketball soon but before that we’re we’re going to the SEC Kentucky Auburn LSU Florida, Mississippi State Of course Ryan we have a lot of viewership from the SEC. They’re good and football, but they’re okay in basketball, we think

Yeah, you know, they

Yeah, Kentucky is a juggernaut. They’re the number one for the past 10 years.

They started really slow, I mean, they had kind of a unique loss to Evansville University who hasn’t coached by Walter McCarty, former Kentucky great defense and then since then he said that one against that then have fired McCarty due to also a court issue. So that is going to be a black eye on the Kentucky this year but since that, you know, they really play good. You know, they got balanced inside outside. This is not going to send them the most talented Kentucky team but the way that we’re playing both sides of the ball, at least, they’re gonna you know, they’re on a great contract right now. They’re probably the number to get in the tournament. You know, they lose the Nexus, last couple of games and quick accident a tournament I know worst days I definitely think

I don’t think so they just got some issues are freakishly athletic they got you know some pros on the team but you know one day they look really great the next day they look disorganized

so far while getting this Creighton is going to do it all this year. But anyways, Pac 12 the Pacific, UCLA, Oregon, Arizona State USC, Colorado, Arizona, Stanford, California, Washington State, Utah, Oregon State Washington. For my experience, I’ve always see Oregon up there competitive when it comes to college basketball.

Wow, really?

Yeah, so right now, the only the big story is obviously Oregon’s a good team. But UCLA, you know, we talked about dominance, or literally being a team that was kind of really bad isn’t Catholic UCLA was another game like that. There were seven and six with losses to North, Kelsey borgin and Hofstra at home, which is not a total hook for UCLA. They come back and right now it’s easy in the conference. And because they’re just on the bubbles, again, we’re talking about bobbins or one bad week, or a quick accent on the conference. I went from not being in a tournament, selecting one from an afterthought to enter the tournament right now. So if you gotta give me a coach in here, I think I’m gonna get thrown in at UCLA,

UCLA. Yes, guys, same team. I’m same school that the Chip Kelly coaches that and welcome Basketball UCLA UCLA produces great talent. Russell Westbrook came from there Kevin Love came from there. And some other great, great athletes that have joined the NBA. And then we’re going finally to the a son. That is the Eastern Conference men’s basketball and Liberty University has taken over. Is this their first season and with a son.

Well, or Asun conference is this like the first year Liberty University is in it?

Last year, second year in a row, they’ve won share the conference title. And we’re lost on a tiebreaker so up winning last year without the NCAA tournament, and this year they’re tired of North Florida. Jacksonville, Florida, but they want the tiebreaker this year. So they will if they choose and playing the championship game on Sundays liberty will be hosting it. So totally the last game ever played.

sounds like the final game is coming. So tell us about the a son. Is this a secondary type of conference? What are your take on the A son?

Ryan Christa
You know, it really was formerly and that sticks out. This is I believe, not not a huge step up kind of a half step up. I would say yeah, step up. You know, we have the affordable toast which was just kind of a household name that too long ago at the conference. Let’s go with the Caribbean Kennesaw State, a lot of teams and bigger cities. Kind of, it’s kind of better for our sport. They’re really good baseball conferences. There was definitely a rifle for liberty, the boot conferences. And over to the big except for the Big South Dakota live, you know, I’d say half stuff, I wouldn’t be the right word. You know, I think some of the teams have got a good reputation. But you know, again, when you’re looking at the net rankings was what strengths basically all the teams in college basketball, you’ve got both.

Okay, so let’s talk about liberties, performance and their stature. Are they dominating the a sun, will they go deep this year? When it comes to March Madness,

lost three conference this year. Wanting as awkward as the buzzer, which was a bad loss. We talked about that being, you know, tied with liberty in the conference. But then that next step, the next game, you know, two days later they go to play Stetson, which is Ohio, Orlando, and kind of has her head scratching lost there. So that’s kind of the, you know, and then I went on to another seven, eight game winning streak and all that which kind of ended on Sunday, and they won that they would have won the conference, all right, which wasn’t the first conference championship in school history.
