Episode #196: RIP Don Shula

Today Coach Don Shula died at 90 years old today according to his children.

Shula was one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He was known for leading the unbeaten Miami Dolphins to the Super Bowl during the 1972 season. The Dolphins are the only team in NFL history to finish an entire season undefeated.

The Preliminary NFL Schedule is out, not the full schedule, but there’ll be no International games.

Probably the best coach ever. And joining us today, we haven’t had him since last year I believe the Chandler Christa relation to Ryan Krista, welcome back to the sports cast. What’s going on? Chandler Tell me what’s going on in your world lately? What’s happening with the whole pandemic and high school? Tell us a quick quick five minutes.

Chandler Christa
Well, I mean, like, it’s kind of like I’m a senior in high school right now. Like I play on the baseball team and our seasons been taken away from us because this whole Coronavirus and it kind of stinks because like this supposed to be like our last season. Our team we won the sectional championship last year. So we’re gonna have a pretty good year and then all of a sudden on March 14, everything just went down the tubes.

What sport do you play? Baseball, baseball and well and what is your position?

Chandler Christa
I love first baseman pitcher

Santiago Leon
for Okay, so what was the school record? I mean, was your season Started um, like, was it? Like, what was the season before? Like, whole pandemic started?

Chandler Christa
Well, yeah, our season we started practice March 1, I think it was March 1. We got two weeks to practice in. In then this all happened then all of a sudden they told us we can’t practice anymore.

Santiago Leon
Well, there you have it. So there’s no there’s no hunch or there’s no possibility for schools to start back or or also have baseball started back anytime soon.

Chandler Christa
I know actually, our governor announced that on Friday the offer schools are closed for the rest of the year. So

there you have it tool. But will they include also for the fall or just just like the springtime?

Chandler Christa
Um, well, they don’t know yet about what’s going on for the fall. I think they’re gonna make an announcement like probably not so like August said, I think which kind of stinks, but like some of the time I don’t know What’s gonna happen in the

fall? Well, hopefully, baseball will come back either in high school or in Major League Baseball in the full time. What? So, what are your plans for college?

Chandler Christa
I’m going to SUNY Delhi High. It’s towards like close to New York. I’m going to study Hotel and Restaurant Management.

That is right near New York City. I think it’s about one hour away. A couple hours. Yeah, I had a. We had an interview two weeks ago, with a kicker named Nick mun jelly. He graduated from SUNY somewhere. I think it was a long island but there’s a few SUNY schools around New York so Yeah, there is. There’s a couple campuses I guess. It is what it is. Anyways, let’s get into the sports cast. Don Shula died at 90 years old. There was a statement this morning by the Miami Dolphins. Shula was the patriarch of the Miami Dolphins for 50 years. He brought the winning edge to our franchise and put the dolphins and the city of Miami In the National Sports Scene, our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Mary Ann along with his children. pave on a and Mike and Miss Heron. Obviously Don Shula was one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He was known for leading the unbeaten Miami, the the unbeaten dolphins back in 1972 and won the Super Bowl. The dolphins are only are the only team in the NFL history to finish an entire season. undefeated Chandler What do you remember? Uh, what are your thoughts about him? And what do you remember? Like with Coach Sula.

Chandler Christa
I don’t remember much about him because I’m like, I think he’s gone into the coaching team from what I started but I remember watching him like coach the dolphins like like games like on YouTube and stuff. And like that was pretty amazing. He led him to like undefeated season. He really brought the Miami oftens like into the scenes in football and all that.

Santiago Leon
Yeah. Don Shula, you know, he brought the dolphins, you know, into undefeated season that was what they were known for. Back in 72, I mean, only had 13 games. So it was not as hard as, as a right now where you got the win, you know, 16 games plus the playoffs, around like 1718 games, so, but the Patriots almost did it back in 2007.

Chandler Christa
They did. That was really close. That was like, I’m kind of I’m not a Patriots fan. Like I can’t like spend them to be honest. Like that was good for them.

Santiago Leon
Yeah. And of course, Don Shula coach throughout all the way to the early 90s. He was, he was around Well, he coach also Dan Marino, one of the greatest quarterbacks, but

Oh, yeah, by far,

but he took him to the Super Bowl, but Dan Marino just couldn’t win it. Some people will say that Don Shula was too old school after like the 70s he never progress with his coaching or his game. I mean, I come from by this but like I would say he’s still gonna go down with like a legendary coach and is he in the Hall of Fame yet? I believe he is. I could double check on that, but he probably is. I mean, he’s he’s the most winningest coach more than Bill Belichick.

Chandler Christa
He’s one of the most games as an NFL coach, which is pretty freakin amazing.

Santiago Leon
Yeah. Of course, with Don Shula passing away after he left. We had a lot of coaches, a lot of coaches afterwards Jimmy Johnson. Dave wants dead. And now we have Brian Flores, so it’d be hard to to top Don Shula as one of the greatest he also was a player for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts and the Washington Redskins.

Chandler Christa
That’s pretty impressive. Like that.

Yeah, before the dolphins he coach the Detroit Lions, and then the Baltimore Colts. And yeah, yeah. That’s when, before the Ravens, the Indianapolis Colts, and of course he was of the dolphins from 1970 to 1995. So 25 years of coaching you can’t do that now, coach.

Chandler Christa
That’s not gonna happen. I don’t see that happening for a lot of these NFL coaches. They come and go so fast.

Santiago Leon
Yeah, like Bill Belichick is at the 20th mark with the Patriots. Do you think he could coach for five more years?

Chandler Christa
I would say all depends how the Patriots do this year. I think if they have one bad year, like I mean, they’ve had so much success, but I feel like they have one bag that year. I think it’s just gonna be gone, which could

happen. I mean, now that you don’t have Tom Brady, which you’ll have said them. I’m really curious what the pages are going to do. Of course AFC East is not that difficult, but I can see the bills winning it but

I Oh, yeah, like an hour and a half you gotta represent. I mean, I like to build a team but cowboys on the way.

But like, you think like what like what are you hearing like you think like this new Bill’s team could go all the way

I would say Josh Allen and he has a pretty good squad I would say, like, Shawn McDermott and Josh Allen I think they can lead the bills. pretty far definitely winning the Division I think. Because if you really think of it, Brady’s gone they really don’t have much competition like the Jets or the dolphins. They’re not really something to worry about.

Yeah, cuz a dolphin just got to attack a lower he’s not gonna start this season, I hope. And then you got the New York Jets with Sam Donald, which they picked. I think they picked up a wide receiver, or,

they select Mickey Becton. That’s like the first round, but they’re not a team to worry about. So pretty much we’re setting And place is with when the jets in the Patriots, I would think the Patriots might take second place in the AFC East. I think the bill is definitely at first place though. would definitely agree with that. But rip to to Mr. Shula. I know that he was pretty old, nine years old, and I know that his time was coming soon. But I’m really I really hope that the NFL will do something special when the preseason comes around, or when the well probably the I would say the Miami Dolphins will probably have some some type of special ceremony at the start of the season or something.

Yeah. Which goes into our next segment. The NFL came out with some news about the schedule, not the final schedule. They announced to be no international Games due to the pandemic so no London Games or no Mexico games makes them so like Yeah. And in the statement, the NFL league announced today that it will schedule all 2020 games in the United States in order for the entire season to to be played in the NFL team stadium. Under consistent protocols focused on the well being of players, personnel and fans. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made the decision after consultation with our clubs national and local governments, the NFL players Association medical authorities and international stadium partners. After considerable analysis we believe the decision to play all our games domestically this season is the right one for our players, our clubs and all our fans in the US, Mexico UK. Set NFL executive vice president chief strategy and growth officer Christopher Halpin. We greatly appreciate the support of our government and stadium partners and Mexico and the UK who all agree with this decision and we look forward to returning the game In both countries in the 2021 season, was this a smart decision jailer for the NFL do this?

Chandler Christa
I would say Yeah. Because like, you don’t know what’s going on in the world right now. Like with all these things going on like the Coronavirus themselves. It’s really bad out there. And like I think the NFL staying United States would be better because like you don’t want to have to go to like, let’s say you go to another country to play a game and then someone catches it, the virus from there in the back state. And they have to affect all these other teams. It could just, it’s just not a good situation.

Santiago Leon
Not a good situation. Of course, I know the United Kingdom is going through a lot of a struggle of the same as Mexico’s worldwide. I would love to see them played at the new Tottenham Stadium, which is which was open this past year.

Chandler Christa
Yeah, that would be a really nice thing to see. But unfortunately, we just kind of wait till the 2021 season.

The NFL had been planning to play one game in Mexico. Let’s go city add a stack of Stadium in four games in London to at Tottenham Hotspur. First stadium as we were talking about and to at Wembley Stadium during the 2020 season, the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars. And the Miami Dolphins had all previously announced that they would be home teams for international series games in 2020. These teams will now play all at their home games this season at their home stadium in the United States. I like to see I’m not a fan of the International I think, yeah, it was cool to see the stadiums and see some new fans. But like, it kind of takes away like the people that season tickets. You know,

people they get lost out of the whole game they should like that screws them over.

Exactly. And of course, it’s just not a home game. Yeah. It’s like the Miami Dolphins Fishel home game but it’s a neutral ground pretty much. No good. Yeah. Your favorite team is who again,

I don’t think they ever have I think there’s been talks about them during the lending game but jerry jones actually made a statement that saying like he doesn’t want to take a home away from him. So he will set him never play International.

I wouldn’t either. I would not either because think about it Dallas Cowboys Stadium or at&t Stadium is probably one of the best stadiums in the world not just here in America but in the world. Oh, yeah. It’s just words can’t describe how amazing it is. Now towards the end of the week, the NFL will release their schedule for next season. There has been rumors about you know, starting in September regularly or at the latest started in October Chandler What do you think’s gonna happen?

Chandler Christa
I think I think the NFL is gonna like pull like a twist. They sing all these things, but I don’t think the NFL like they said there’s only 17 games scheduled. I don’t think they’re gonna do that this year. And I could see the first game not starting to really affect over

Do a great I think they said the latest will be October 15. And then the Supergirl will be at the last weekend of February.

Chandler Christa
I see I don’t know how risky playing late into February because that’s where people who play outside that’s where snow comes in stuff.

Santiago Leon
True. And I think I believe next year Super Bowl will be in Tampa so it will not I mean, Tampa does not have snowshoes right yeah, so I mean, it’ll be cooler weather but it won’t be any blizzards or or any snowstorms.

Chandler Christa
But be interesting to see the Buccaneers making the Superbowl that could

that could happen. Now. What if the AFC Championship game was in Buffalo in the middle of February? What are the chances for snow to happen?

Chandler Christa
I would say the chances are very high but I think like it’d be kind of fun to watch these teams play in the snow and I kind of like watching the snow because the game is a whole lot different. It’s just fun to watch and play and

it’s harder stuff for like the ball. Like how hard is the ball is it like like it’s a pretty pretty tough and hard

Chandler Christa
Yeah, cuz I feel like picked up up on the snow before and it’s definitely like, it’s definitely hard but it’s definitely like it’s a lot more running plays you don’t really throw the ball very much.

Yeah. So I think what’s gonna happen no matter what, NFL will start at the latest in October

but, will there be fans?

Chandler Christa
That’s the million dollar question. I mean, to be honest like I I really don’t think there’s gonna be fans of some upcoming NFL season.

Santiago Leon
I think what they can do is either have limited amount of fans so instead of like 85,000 have 30,000 Yeah, or I like 25% of the stadium Of course all social distance and having wear them a mask or completely empty and just plan at the trading facilities.

Chandler Christa

um, You know, like, like most of these training facilities like the fields are as big or as big as the stadium fields. Right?

Chandler Christa
That would be, I’ve never heard that would be, that would be a pretty interesting thing to do. Keep it condensed,

you know, I mean, there’s no point of opening up a whole stadium for no one to be there. You just have staff like this. Each team will have 100 people, you know, per sideline, plus the players like 100. And it will be, like 50 players and 50. Staff members, I believe that’s about the right number we have about 100. Which, and then, I mean, testing people is gonna be difficult, but I guess we’ll just have to do it ahead of time.

Chandler Christa
You know, the other million dollar question is, if they know fans, Will these games still be on TV?

Santiago Leon
Oh, probably. Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, there’s so many deals going on. Absolutely. There’s just no, I mean, the tv deals is pretty much pays a lot, a huge chunk to the NFL, and they need the tv deals happening, whereas they just signed me Amazon just had a new deal with the NFL this past week selling their hat. I mean, that’s probably a huge chunk of the NFL revenue. When I watch it, yeah, but you know, maybe like, okay, October November, there’ll be no fans but maybe for this Saturday January, little allowed to have fans.

Chandler Christa
Yeah, I think it’s like half and half.

Santiago Leon
Yes, slowly meshing it and see how it is, obviously, yes, the wintertime is when the flu and these viruses kind of kick in a little bit. But yeah, most of the states have this thing prepared. They do have by then there’ll be more resources to handle any big pandemic, of course, not perfect, but yeah. Yes, I’m in Florida.

Like, what are you guys like, what’s your governor? What’s going down? down there? Well,

Santiago Leon
majority of the states open mind is where I’m at minus Miami for lardo. I’m in Palm Beach. So it’s still close till further notice hopefully by mid May we might be open and but up north in Orlando and Tampa, only restaurants only have 25% of people in the restaurant so which is not bad. But, we’re getting our gears together we have plenty of a whole lot of sites to test well a whole lot of testing sites. And I think we’re just getting better i think you know, throughout every day they’re always adding new stuff there’s more you know, we’re all more like way more prepared New York as well. They’re way more prepared but gosh, I can’t see a stadium full of fans at the metal end anytime soon. No, New York City is definitely New York’s got hit in the hardest in the whole time. Yeah, that’s gonna be a big no no for for you know, fly by, like the jets and giants but other places. La, la as well as another big part and of course San Francisco. But we’ll see what happens. Hopefully, we’ll find out towards the end of the week what the NFL is going to do what I’ve heard they’re gonna release the whole 17 games schedule, but they do have contingency plans. If they think by you know, September August they don’t think that like they’re able to start by then so I think no matter where they’re gonna start

the question is like one for games like if you let’s say you schedule them like what do you do? How do you decide playoffs?

I think they’re just gonna have to push everything back by two three weeks. Or, or they short in like the season like by two games.

I could see them just playing 15 games

15 and that’s great for the health this players will be like this is how it’s supposed to be. Yeah, I’m breaking news this past weekend. Andy Dalton is going to the Cowboys signed. A one year deal for For $7 million, I believe Chandler you’re a cowboy fan. Were you surprised?

She, I when I first saw I didn’t believe it. I looked more into it. And I’m like, Okay, this is like, I kind of feel bad for the guy, because he went from being like a starter in Cincinnati and doing pretty good to like, going to be a potentially a backup quarterback for the Cowboys. Yeah, like, I mean, it’s okay. But like, I mean, I don’t know. I feel like if we always have a solid backup quarterback, I could say,

do you think they’re they’re kind of pressuring Dak Prescott a bit like, hey, if you don’t perform Andy Dalton’s right behind you.

Prescott’s really mad about this. One he wanted a big deal signed in once all this money in like they come in and bring in like a pretty veteran quarterback. Let’s call him Unlike the previous backup quarterback, you’re like fresco I have a couple bad moves. Like he’s out of there, which could happen. Yeah, it could happen can be interesting

Andy Dalton signs a one year deal worth up to $7 million includes a $3 million guaranteed all this happened after the Bengals draft to Joe burrow as number one overall pick Of course it released them a few few days later. But the couple ways they’re pretty strapped a pretty stacked had a great NFL Draft. They picked up CD lamb best draft. Yeah. And well tell us a little bit about your thoughts over the NFL Draft. Like cowboys use the NFL. The Cowboys of course what were your thoughts about their pigs got CD lamb.

They did pretty freakin good. That wide receiver in the CD land from Oklahoma. He’s a pretty savvy guy. And they they got some good like I would say over That’s a pretty good draft they got their weaknesses. I think the wide receiver in the got the CD lamb, I think he’s gonna be like a third, second third or fourth wide receiver because they have on Amari Cooper and stuff I think he’s gonna perform pretty well.

We also got Trayvon Diggs cornerback from Alabama. Good pick one of the top corner corners of the college football that also got an Advil gallon more defensive tackle from Oklahoma. I would say the Cowboys can make they can make a run pretty freakin far this year. Do they got the

I think they do. Because like, I don’t know because Philadelphia they picked up a good quarterback who was it? The guy?

I don’t know because I feel like Jalen hertz is a good quarterback and all. I think I would like to see him start up the lens. I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen. But like, I like Jalen hertz. I liked him. It was time. I would say he has a decent amount of talent. It’s gonna be interesting,

but it feels like I think the Eagles I mean, sorry, the Cowboys. I think they’re gonna get this one. Mike McCarthy Are you fan?

I am a fan. I like him a lot more than Jason Garrett. Like what is Jason Garrett even doing these days? I know him awesome.

Isn’t he a offensive coordinator for the Giants? No, right.

Oh, he might be.

He might get picked up but he’s not a head coach. He’s i think i think people already blacklisted him to not be a head coach in the NFL anywhere.

but Mike McCarthy did good. And Green Bay. Obviously, he lost favor with Aaron Rodgers. But he’s a experienced coach. But the playoffs he definitely have to experiment. theories. Yeah. So he could definitely can you take capitalists to the next level? Well, he has a lot of pieces.

So I could definatley see the Cowboys being the Super Bowl contending team? Well

how far do you think they’re gonna go?

Um, they’re not gonna go to the Super Bowl. I don’t think so. Maybe Gosh, I mean I only know I don’t even know if they’ll make it to the NFC Championship game I think that’s a tough tough tough climb who’s gonna take it over them that was either gonna be the saints Tampa or the niners

Tampa is a contender man even though Tampa you know don’t have much running backs like you’d have running backs but not like all star caliber. But Tampa Bay is a force now with with with gronk and Brady going there. You’re not my opinion or Tampa or your thoughts.

I think that they’re gonna have I think they’re gonna be gone in a couple years but I don’t think they’re I think this year, first year at Grady and Gaga. I feel like it’s gonna be like a year rebuilding type thing. I think we’ll go to the playoffs. I don’t see him going to the Super Bowl though.

I don’t think I mean Brady only has two years left to be honest. I don’t think he has much time.

he. He has a tough, tough conference. You got the saints and you got the the Panthers aren’t in rebuilding stage right now, so I have to worry about them. It’s just a sense we got to worry about
