Santiago Leon and Ryan Christa discuss the latest updates on Sports Leagues schedules as to which it portrays in midst of the pandemic. Leagues in the discussion include: Major League Baseball, NBA, Major League Soccer, and the NFL.
Show Notes
Major League Baseball and the Players Association started negotiations about resuming the 2020 season on Tuesday. The two sides began talks after commissioner Rob Manfred held a Monday conference call with the league’s 30 owners, who approved a restart proposal that would have the 2020 regular season begin in early July.
Here are the proposals:
- 82-game regional schedule and universal DH
- 30-man active rosters with a 20-player taxi squad
- 14 teams in the postseason with games played in home cities in October
- 50/50 revenue split for players and owners
MLB 2020 Playoff Setup
- Teams with the best record in each league get a wild card round bye.
- Two other division winners and top wild card team host all games of three-game series in wild card round.
- Two other division winners get to pick their wild card round opponents. The other two wild cad teams are paired up.
NBA Update
Participants on a board of governors call Tuesday with NBA commissioner Adam Silver left the virtual meeting feeling increasingly positive about the league’s momentum toward a resumption of play this season, sources told ESPN.
Owners and executives on the call were encouraged about the league’s progress toward minimizing health risk upon a return and the league office’s positive conversations with the National Basketball Players Association about the players’ desire to eventually restart the season, sources said.
Discussions centered on health and safety concerns, including the goal of getting team officials and players comfortable with the idea that a positive test for the coronavirus upon a return would not shutter play.
Silver told those on the call that if a positive test would “shut us down, we probably shouldn’t go down this path.”
The question remains: How many positive tests would be too many? That is among the questions that the NBA, NBPA and medical experts have to come to terms with in the coming weeks before the league and union can greenlight a resumption of play.
MLS Update
MLS has made a proposal to the the union about salary reductions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ESPN reported on Monday. The league seeks a 20-percent pay cut for every player.
Rams reveal new uniforms that include metallic chrome blue helmet
The Las Vegas Raiders and former Chicago Bears cornerback Prince Amukamara agreed to a contract Tuesday.

The NBA are on top they had a talk with Adam Silver this past week, and they’re hopeful that they that they could finish off the season strong in June. And joining us to talk to us a little bit about the NBA Major League Baseball and maybe some MLS Ryan crysta all the way from upstate New York.
Ryan Christa
Santiago Good to be here. Good to talk a little bit a sports news. Ryan say Sunday we’ll talk about sports.
Santiago Leon
Well, there is Korean baseball right now.
Ryan Christa
going on I always catch a little bit in the mornings I’m Santiago
Santiago Leon
Hauser so play Is it is it is it like similar to Major League Baseball I mean, I think more
Ryan Christa
you know, the players on is probably agile or athletic. But you know, they have again, I think we talked about last night Azzam you know, it’s probably you know, behind the Japanese League, which is a second you know, highest league in the world, it’s probably the third So, you got a lot of former major league players you know, who rather play you know, in Asia, then go back to you know, playing minor league baseball permanently, so, you’re better than nothing, that’s for sure. You know,
Santiago Leon
following these rules, leagues like the Korean League, the German Bundesliga a lot of the major league leagues here in America are looking at them and see how is how it will go. Now go major baseball. What is the plan? I heard they’re like they will be doing something in June. I believe they’re gonna have like a mini tournament. What have you heard about Major League Baseball so far?
Ryan Christa
Well, they proposed an 82 game schedule that would have the players report you know, middle of June and games right start in July. Under that propose that the owners proposed and voted on it would reduce the player salary, you know, quite a bit to you know, basically they would go to almost a salary cap system for the, you know, the league when they’ve you know, Major League Baseball right now is the only you know, the major sports leagues in America the only one that does not have any type of salary cap restrictions at all. So now the players have voted on saying previously you know when the pandemic started that whatever games I play in this year, they’ll pay they’ll get paid for but the players
Santiago Leon
but the players have complained about that did that they don’t want to go that route they want to get paid regularly.
Ryan Christa
Well, they voted on me they begged me to get paid in this turn solution they you know, they would get paid half their salary because they’re paying half this either. Right? Well, now the owners are coming back and said no, no, no, we want you to take even less of a pay cut. Even though you’re playing half the season because you know, they gotta be investing the revenue from fans in the stands, you know, you know, concession in the normal game day revenue that they produce, the only revenue they’ll be getting is from the TV contract. So they wanted to take a little bit more of a pay take out to the players and they voted, you know, the owners voted unanimously this weekend, you know, they brought to the players union and Basically what the owners are trying to do is call, you know, get it, you know, you know, public relations, battle with the players, you know, and insensitive, you know how we’ll try to get the players to vote on this, you know, because public right now is going to say, you know, you’ve seen greedy, you know, when the rest of the world is struggling to make ends meet, and you’re getting paid millions of dollars and you’re arguing over that. So, you know, right now it’s not working because our basically their standings, you know, call that, you know, they’re not backing down from the original proposal that they accepted, which is getting paid for any games that they play, you know, basically a prorated salary. That’s the contract there these time.
Santiago Leon
Here are a couple points from this, this agreement because this agreement goes with Major League Baseball, the owners and the Players Association, which is very similar to a union, but one of the things they agreed obviously was the 82 game original schedule. And it’s 30 men active roster with a with a 20 player taxi squad with a taxi squad.
Ryan Christa
So basically they would bring the minor league team with them, you know, they bring the high which basically says the minor league baseball
Santiago Leon
barons will be included.
Ryan Christa
So basically Yeah. Or you know, what they’ll do is you know, they’ll have, you know, let’s just say you know, let’s say the Marlins, they train in Jupiter, Florida, so basically they’ll keep that 20 man taxi squad playing, you know, scrimmages, you know, in practice games all the time down in Jupiter. So instead of playing in the minor leagues, they’ll be playing you know, barely keeping fresh down there. So then when they need you know, an injury happens, they can call anybody you know, right away. So that you know, you know, they might bring you know, five or, you know, on a road trip five or 10 of these guys with the you know, Whatever you know that might need in our daily occurrence,
Santiago Leon
and there’ll be 14 teams in the postseason with games played in home season. Home cities in October, there’ll be a 5050 revenue split off for players and owners. This is what the postseason is looking at teams with the best record in each League, get a wildcard round by two other division winners and top wildcard team host all games, a three game series and wildcard round. Two other division winners get to pick their wildcard round opponents. The two other wildcard teams are paired up. We think about that postseason
Ryan Christa
as wild as that but basically they’re saying that you know 162 game baseball’s is as a good enough sample size to tell which team you know, you know, the top five teams in each league are at two games, you know Seems like a lot of games in the realm of baseball, that’s not a lot of games. The Baseball you know, kind of in any given day, you know, but the law of averages say you know, if you have a great team you’re gonna learn a lot more than you lose so and 162 game season you know, you know that right there’s gonna come to the forefront at two games, you’re you might not be able to see who the best teams are. So this way you’re giving more chances to everybody to kind of evaluate who’s the winner of the league
Santiago Leon
Major League Baseball and and the NFL. Correct me if I’m wrong are the only two leagues that uses wildcard systems right.
Ryan Christa
I’m actually a hockey fan of yours as well too. two divisions in each conference and the top three teams from each conference. Each division makes the playoffs and then the top two fourth and fifth place teams or you know from
Santiago Leon
the rest of the conference make the playoffs around eight. So they kind of have their own version of the wild card in hockey. Interesting. I thought that like NHL was similar to to what they do in the NBA, you know, just straight up playoffs everyone gets their first round.
Ryan Christa
They used to but they changed up the divisions a couple of years ago. As a crazy format.
Santiago Leon
Players and leaks that is the war right now the NBA had a virtual call with Adam Silver between m silver and the owners also the Board of Governors feeling increasingly positive about the league’s momentum Toward a resumption of play the season, sources told ESPN owners and executives in the call were encouraged, encouraged about the league’s progress toward the minimizing health risk upon a return and the league office positive conversations with the NBA Association. About the players desire to eventually restart the season discusses a discussion centered on health and safety concerns including the goal of getting team officials and players comfortable with the idea that a positive test for the Coronavirus upon a return would not shut her play. So, obviously, the question is about testing. You know, is there enough tests for these players, a lot of the players are ready training, maybe also in the team facilities. But there’s also a group of people Ryan that they want to see the season just you know, fold they just, you know, they just wait till like October or maybe even in December where you thought About that,
Ryan Christa
yeah. I mean, we’re really kind of looking. This is a kind of still kind of bizarre, you know, what are we in the middle of May now, you know, which is kind of you know, where if we look at a normal calendar, you know, we’re halfway through the playoffs right now, we’re looking towards, you know, the conference finals. And what are we talking about now resuming? You know, I’m assuming where they go, you know, resume, it’s gotta be just the playoffs, I would have a higher bet that they would play any regular season games. But, I mean, you’re saying that the decision is two to four weeks so you let’s just say it’s the middle of June and then they’re gonna have a training. So you’re probably you’re not looking to start any earlier than probably the end of June, the middle of July. I mean, how long are we going to go for? You’re going to play for seven game series, which I think I’ve read that one to
Santiago Leon
seven game series. I
Ryan Christa
mean, yeah, I mean, I mean, what are you going to look at planet finishing in You know, Amber? I mean, really what, you know, you gotta say, Where are they, you know, they’re looking at. I mean, they keep on bringing it to places and that’s, you know, Las Vegas, you know, at the MGM where they have, you know, the players gonna stay at the hotel and play it the arena, and then obviously disney world because, you know, their resort is closed and they got all the hotels and you know they have their sports center there. So that kind of works out well logistically, again, you’re getting the players, you know, they want to play they took a straw poll, Chris Paul had any Players Association Rep. You know, basically sent a text to other players and majority of them said yes to play. So the players are on board, you know, they’ve been obviously the main concern is health and safety of themselves. In a one type of isolation plan, you know, I don’t know if you heard this yesterday. I got a window. Obviously golf is planning on starting in the middle of June. And they, you know, golf is a lot different than basketball, you know, you’re not, you basically have no contact, you know, with your opponent. And there’s a 37 page mandate, you know about rules and regulations and social distancing. And now we’re here to talk about what kind of rules and regulations you can talk about basketball when you got a physical game, you know, I, you know, there’s a lot of loopholes to come through Santiago before this happened. So I mean, look.
Santiago Leon
I don’t know. I mean, I mean, Rudy, go bear came out healthy. Obviously, basketball is a physical score, people are sweating. People are probably spitting. You know, there’s a lot of a lot of imperson, you know, situation. So it’s just, I mean, I don’t know, I don’t know, Ryan. I mean, the games have to be played, but at the same time, I mean, not everyone could wear a mask. Well playing basketball.
Ryan Christa
Now, you know, you can’t. I mean, the players got a plan for safety testing, you know, you know, again, you know, how many league officials are we gonna go down to each place? You know, is it going to be? You know all your gyms and all your training staff. There’s a lot of people Santiago, there’s
Santiago Leon
a lot of people, there’s about how much staff and players will be there at the game. Is it like 50? Is it is it 2030? I mean,
Ryan Christa
I mean, you’re probably looking at 20 to 30 personnel that travel with the team per team.
Santiago Leon
But they could always cut that down. Hey, waterboy, no waterboarding, like, you’re gonna have to grab your own drinks.
Ryan Christa
Yeah, it’s just so you got worried about the safety of everybody in their traveling party. And then obviously the big kids, you know, they have enough saved, you know, protocol saying, Okay, if something does happen, you can’t overreact. Yeah, we’ll send this
Santiago Leon
way. What if one player gets a virus, you can’t overreact. You just gonna have to, like, this guy kind of plays for like, you know, for two weeks. We just gonna have to go to the store.
Ryan Christa
I mean, basically Santiago Rooney go bare shut down sports,
Santiago Leon
free lunch, and I want talks about that.
Ryan Christa
Correct. You know, I remember that day quite vividly. You know, you know, literally that that morning, the NBA voted on, you know, starting whatever that weekend that you know, there would be no fans and so, basically, you know, all of a sudden, you know, what, seven, eight hours later, you know, Rudy gobert test positive. They stopped the thunder. Whoever knows who they are, you know, thunder and jazz and You know, hours later, you know, the college basketball tournament shut down the NBA shut down for the see season. NHL, you know, every major sporting event is crazy. It was a domino effect. But you know, like you said, You know, I think right now for the next couple of weeks, all eyes are on, you know, NASCAR,
Santiago Leon
honestly, no contact sport, non physical golf. You don’t need many people there. It’s just your caddy and the golf player.
Ryan Christa
But, you know, I think you’re gonna look a lot at San Diego cuz that’s the first major sporting, you know, traditional sport being played? Which one which sport? Honestly,
Santiago Leon
yeah. Bundesliga this Saturday. That’s correct, which is this weekend. And a lot of leaks including the NFL we’ll look at what’s gonna happen this weekend. And for the next couple of weeks.
Ryan Christa
I mean, the NFL got some time you know, they got a couple And
Santiago Leon
if I have some time, a lot of time
Ryan Christa
when you talk about the NBA,
Santiago Leon
I think it’s too soon, Brian,
Ryan Christa
I think it’s too soon NBA and NFL and baseball, you’re looking at something that’s got to be done sooner than later. So they’re looking, you know, what happens, you know, with that so I think all eyes on that. I mean, we see the success of it, but then talking about that, you know, they’ve had a lot of success.
Santiago Leon
What What have you heard about the NHL?
Ryan Christa
Very, very quiet Santiago.
Santiago Leon
I think I talked to one guy in my grocery store. He’s the only kid that I know that falls hockey after you. And I think he told me that like they had some agreement of me not even playing at all. I think that’s what I heard, but I could be totally wrong as well
Ryan Christa
than later and that is now it’s all sudden,
Santiago Leon
but they do wear helmets with facial shields
Ryan Christa
yeah that’s a very you know again it’s not just that it’s all the contact you have with the players and you know your staff and just not just you know the the time you’re on the ice it’s solid it’s your everyday life and everyday you know you no contact you have people in your organization on team you know, I mean locally here Rochester we have our minor league hockey team just their season just went on postponed to cancel you know, so that’s not a good time for the NHL, it’s kind of known but again, you know, minor league sports are gonna are gonna be the first to go as we try to at least get, you know, the perfect you know, major league sports back down the field or wherever, so by like yours on hockey is very, very warm right now.
Santiago Leon
Your hockey is very
Ryan Christa
Get the publication that basketball does. You know you’re not hearing anything out of anywhere.
Santiago Leon
And another League, which is parallel to Major League Baseball is Major League Soccer. They’ve asked the players to take a 20% salary reduction. Major League Soccer could return this summer, the League and the MLS sociation must work out an agreement Simple as that. MLS has made a proposal to the union about salary reductions due to COVID-19 pandemic, the league seeks a 20% pay cut for every player. The league which is celebrating its 25th season of all years, also has acts for more financial reductions beyond salary cuts for the 2020 campaign. If MLSP a the the the players in agrees that could very well run into 10s of millions of dollars 10s of millions of dollars MLS continues to engage in productive conversations with the MLS over with over ways in which we can collectively address challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic says president MLS president Garber and Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott the MLS pa did not respond to ESPN for comment on a handful of weeks into season A into the season on March 12, the league suspended played it to depend on Okay, so MLS is is a crucial part of their time because, you know, they kind of run thin with their margins. Um, do you think this mic pass through?
Ryan Christa
I mean, I’m not quite sure how, you know, how important you know, playing this season again. They gotta come up with a plan, you know, okay, you got a 20% reduction? Does that mean you’re going to play? Obviously, if new play games are going to be in front of no fans? Does that mean you’re going to be playing in one central location, you’re gonna be playing in your trips or so stadium? What kind of safety and testing you’re going to do? When are you going to start playing? You know, we take a 20% cut, are you playing, you know, how many games you’re actually going to try to make play? I mean, there’s a lot of things that go into, you know, not just saying 20% you know, What, are you asking the players, you know, if you’re gonna play in one side, you’re gonna be playing two or three games a week, then to make up for the games, or you’re gonna just play your normal two games a week, you know?
Santiago Leon
Yeah, I mean, I really do think that MLS could definitely extend their season till December, which I think the MLS Cup is typically scheduled in December, and a lot of them have soccer centric stadiums, of course. They’re going to see what the Bundesliga does. You know, How will protocol they’re gonna do differently but MLS I could definitely see them start in September at the latest and you know shorten the season you I mean you’re not gonna have the full season and and and just you know play it out and see what happens and take that players cut I’m not surprised MLS survived the recession back in oh wait so I’m really looking into if they’ll survive this pandemic so really curious any any closing words or thoughts on the MLS
Ryan Christa
unique league and our sports system you know it started off you know as you know kind of the dreamy you know leaving you know big cities playing in soccer, you know football stadiums, but quickly you know, it’s found, you know, these negatives Seattle, let’s say the Kansas City, Kansas City, you know where all of a sudden you know, I think the soccer this league has found, you know, cities that really love their sport. You know you go to a random place in America that doesn’t have an MLS team and they could probably carry two bets about the soccer but you go to these cities and these you know, there’s so much passion you know, and it’s a very big deal Santiago is
Santiago Leon
in Salt Lake. Yeah,
Ryan Christa
I think it might be bigger than baseball in some cities. Correct and Akin in a Kansas City especially you know, I mean, do they love the Royals sure when they’re winning, but more or less not the Royals aren’t winning. If you if you turn on a sport in Kansas, a soccer game, you’re not gonna see an empty seat for years it seems like but your turn on like, you know, Kansas City Royals game you will see plenty of empty seats. I’m not Just starting to see, you know, just around a buck. You know, there’s definitely a lot of passion in these certain cities for their team, you know, but he’s on your turn. I, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you know, you know, I’ve seen Dallas ever, you know, have a beautiful stadium but I’ve never seen that stadium filled. It’s a big deal. I don’t think it’s that
Santiago Leon
about New England. They can’t fulfill that for them for the revolution.
Ryan Christa
Yeah, I mean, they only use half. You know, that’s one team that’s really hasn’t. I think they have a good enough passion. You know, it does look different because they’re only playing football Sam saw the sale is like 70 bucks. Yeah, there’s some passion but not a whole lot of passion. If he got bread bowls, I mean, it was amazing Stadium in New Jersey. Loving has never been put in 75% silver right. And they got a lot of people
Santiago Leon
around that stadium.
Ryan Christa
A lot of people
Santiago Leon
but no interest.
Ryan Christa
But then you go and they bring an FCA In in nysc and Yankees stay down I know they have some, you know, European stars there for a while and they first started and that’s what they’re getting 40 50,000 seats people to play you know so i mean i think location is a big deal at that. Yeah, go back to the beginning you know and the losses of you know grown tremendous leaps and bounds in the cities where it is. And it’s you know, definitely founding it’s a niche sport meaning that everybody’s on board with it, you know, not like football or basketball or majority that people fall into certain cities in certain areas. It’s very big. You set a definite I know, you know, sports like you said during tough economic times tend to take a backseat because people don’t have a lot of money. Sponsorships don’t have a lot of money for TV. So Mr. survived that one time, you know, I think they’re gonna be okay. Even if they take This year off, you know, that just doesn’t work out. I think they’ll survive you know, because you know, they can’t just go out there and not make any money Santiago they got
Santiago Leon
they got to make some money right Ryan
Ryan Christa
Yeah, you gotta go out there you know, that means you know players they don’t play and pair players don’t really make a salary of a share. That’s just a tough choice they’re going to have to make it’s not worth it.
Santiago Leon
Let’s go on to the NFL the Rams revealed their new uniforms include metallic chrome blue helmet, have you seen them?
Ryan Christa
I’ve seen Santiago Wow, the uniforms that come out. kind of bizarre.
Santiago Leon
Yeah, they’ve been new but edgy, but hey, you know sometimes you get updated them every so often.
Ryan Christa
I don’t know. Everybody’s just kind of looking to make a splash and there’s bound to But
Santiago Leon
it’s been a big news story obviously cuz a sports not you know night going on NBA drops I don’t know
Ryan Christa
a big story you know things are normal in the NBA Playoffs are going on epi would have been on the back page not the front page of sports
Santiago Leon
and VA has parted ways with longtime sporting goods Spalding, which produces the MBAs custom made basketballs the new game ball will be manufactured by Chicago based company Wilson starting with a 2122 cent accord or something no more salted Ryan it’s Wilson time.
Ryan Christa
Um first time but it might not make a big difference. But Wilson Spalding You know, I’m you know, I do coach basketball as I do touch a lot of basketballs and different fields. There’s a big difference, Santiago. I don’t you know, I know. I’ve heard field, you know, the way you know. And that’s a big difference for players players are definitely used to, you know, the way balls come off their hands. And definitely, you know, they try that new ball a couple years ago for feeling and players revolted quickly, you know, they had to go back to the new is there the old ball. But you know, I think you know, I don’t know if it’s gonna make a huge difference but and then you know Spalding Wilson you know, I don’t think Wilson’s gonna you know make that much more money you know selling balls you know Dick’s Sporting Goods because now that official ball the NBA you know, if you’ve got an index, you’re just gonna take a ball off the you know, whatever the cheapest one off the shelf but for the players, that’s definitely a big deal for them.
Santiago Leon
He does. Back to the NFL, the Las Vegas Raiders has signed ex Chicago Bears cornerback Prince I’ma come Laura for there’s no details on the contract would that be a big help for the Raiders
Ryan Christa
yeah it has actually let me go back a couple months you know when free agency first started they originally had a deal in place and all and then both sides walked away from the table now cuz you had that whatever that first week where players agreed to contracts but they can’t sign them when they want to sign a contract or something in the contract that he didn’t like and you know both parted ways and now you have a team sell Yeah, and I think the radio well they worked out whatever differences they have and he signed his contract.
Santiago Leon
Which is speaking about stadiums, the Raiders having a gorgeous stadium Have you seen the renderings
Ryan Christa
beautiful San Diego
Santiago Leon
It looks like a European like a Bayern Munich stadium.
Ryan Christa
Now if somebody is I think I just like school because obviously you know I’ve only been to Las Vegas one time but uh definitely a unique place to fly to because you literally you know you got you know you’re flying in the middle of the desert and then all sudden you hear the the the wheels of the airplane going down and you’re really doing I don’t see anything you know and all of a sudden there’s a lot to say kind of to the desert so I can’t imagine flying into Las Vegas now seeing this humongous stadium out there. Skies and great to
Santiago Leon
see bro I’m on site, which is their first pro club.
Ryan Christa
Well, they do have sporting teams.
Santiago Leon
They do, which I don’t know about hockey teams. And I do have to actually random question at the end of the show and never remember and I hopefully I remember it. Then. Ryan Chris, I know you’re you’re watching the last dance because you got nothing else to do on Sunday nights. This past weekend was the Gary Payton slash Michael Jordan. His dad could join us today. Episode and also bought more. Michael Jackson trash talking and then Scottie Pippen, you know, sitting out on game seven against the Knicks in the eastern semi finals of the NBA playoffs. What were your thoughts this past weekend of the last dance? I think
Ryan Christa
pepper and you know, that would he do the same thing today after knowing that they drew that playoff for Tony to coach instead of him? And he then going to game they said, Yes. And it was interesting. You know, sometimes when you do stuff in the moment as a player or you know, you’re actually emotionally, you know, you go back in time, and you realize, oh, that didn’t really make sense. But what is this like, 1520 years later, he still said, yes, you do the same thing. So I thought that was very interesting, you know, take you know that from that, again, you know, it’s just interesting to dive into, you know, all the things that you know, We didn’t know back then you know, it doesn’t seem long time ago but you know, but it was a totally different world you know without social media and having the cameras everywhere. We didn’t know about these insights then the relationships that players actually had with each other
Santiago Leon
which will surprise you the most so far within the series.
Ryan Christa
I guess I didn’t really you know, I didn’t realize that the slide featuring Steve Curren Michael Jordan yet but
Santiago Leon
I’ve heard that story before i think i think it’s a
Ryan Christa
secret but I feel like you know, why times you hear stories in this crowd like water under the bridge now because they want championships? I don’t necessarily when they’re talking to each other that it was water under the bridge. You know, I still think there’s some dislike between each other
Santiago Leon
but there was no dislike with Gary Payton. No, the glove.
Ryan Christa
Yeah, yeah. You know, Such as a well made documentary, Santiago, you know, you’re obviously you’re taking a look at, you know, the last year that the bowls were really put together while taking a look at Michael Jordan’s whole career and all the people and this you know this
Santiago Leon
10 episodes which they could have didn’t and 20 episodes.
Ryan Christa
Oh yeah, I mean, I feel like you know, it’s like give me more give me more you know, I think we got a little hint and say we’re gonna be I think you know, I don’t know when it’s gonna happen could be years from now, but I think they’re gonna do the same thing into the Dallas Cowboys dynasty back in the night. I’ve
Santiago Leon
heard that. I’ve heard they’re working on that. But I’m more interested in with like the Lakers 2002 to 2004 with Shaq and Kobe, but
Ryan Christa
I definitely think that was in the work Santiago before Kobe died. Unfortunately
Santiago Leon
that’s like a part two of the list.
Ryan Christa
first hand knowledge, you know, yeah, and I think what’s really interesting about this documentary, you know, I think is how truthful you know Michael Jordan is and you know, he’s giving these recounts about it, you know, you know, people he played with, you know, you know, ownership you know, opponents like, again, you know, we weren’t we weren’t privy to a lot of that inside information that you know, we get to now we we know a lot about our professional player, you know, personalized because of you know, social media. Wait, we only heard about the headlines back in the 90s. Now we now with a documentary and you know, finding old footage, we can really dive into what it was like, you know, during those times and you know, how big of a star Michael Dorn really was how big of a competitor hero because we heard stories about you know, how practice you know, he would be so hard on this players and his teammates said they really just didn’t like them. They like playing with them because they weren’t sure why they didn’t like him as a teammate, because he was kind of a jerk. But he got the best out of each one of them, you know. And in the end, though, he really trusted his teammates, you know, he taught, you know, he was willing to make that, you know, that past when he got double teams, you know? And, and yeah, and that just kind of shows, you know, he’s always willing to make that big play. And I think that’s something that early on, I think LeBron James was always being accused of he wasn’t willing to take that big shot, but you know, you’re watching us shows the ESCO. You know, yes, Georgia has that shot against the Cavs years ago. They had a couple game winners, but he was also willing to make those extra passes when he had to the wide open play reality to them. Exactly, you know,
Santiago Leon
Mo Williams.
Ryan Christa
Mo Williams, yes. But now you know, you I feel like maybe abroad is, you know, fairly treated because I’m looking at Jordan Jordan is definitely willing passer mo those game winning possessions. And I feel like you know, because the Colby and between LeBron, the bridge to the Bronx. Yeah. But Kobe was willing to take that shot with two or three people on him. He wasn’t going to be that willing passer all the time. Well, maybe a million that michelle obama Dory, but after those first couple of years, you know he was going to take that shot no matter what. Well, Jordan was willing to make that pass. LeBron is always willing to make the right path. So that’s superstars make the difference plays that, you know, there’s no right or wrong, you know, it’s just how, how each of them are built. is essentially, you know, my last closing comments here, you know, without ESPN put up that list of, you know, the 75 greatest players. And I read I was expecting Toby to be Top three or four. But number nine and I am not a Kobe guy.
Santiago Leon
I know you’re more of a LeBron guy and you’re shocked to see Kobe that low. I think it’s wait ninth? Gosh, maybe I’m too biased. I don’t know.
Ryan Christa
I’m 35 years old and most of these players, they’re in the top, you know, a lot of them played well for Ireland. You know, watching all the games, even Jordan, you know, Jordan play most things, you know, when I was, you know, up to middle school, so I wasn’t watching, you know, you know, 2030 games as soon as I saw I lost in 10 to 15 you know, top 10 So, I didn’t you know, I didn’t have that appreciation. You know, I think now you know, like Michael Jordan play now you’re watching you know, 5060 FPS games at least every season, you know, just because the TV is a lot more accessible now. But, you know, when you’re comparing, you know, you know, well, Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul Jabbar to the gamers as totally definitely. And there’s Seven errors, I think in the 80s you know, early 80s you know you had a lot of offensive basketball I think that’s where you had crema Georgia bar put up Riddick numbers, you know, and then you know, Pat Riley came and Chuck Daly and the bad boys test them so from the mid 80s to mid 90s that game was definitely hardcore basketball, it was low scoring because you look at this bowl scoring numbers, they hardly ever got to 100 the game has always played in the 80s and 90s. Now teams get to 100 by the third quarter, it’s just a totally different game now. I think Mike D’Antoni really changed the game in the early 2000s you know, with a spread out you know, seven seconds or less you know, quick shots three point it, you know, the sun’s, you know, gateway to the, you know, warriors and now the game is totally different. Everybody kind of wants their own form of the Warriors even you know, defensive minded Coaches got to really change the way they play to keep up every year that they’re definitely playing basketball. So it’s just it’s definitely hard to rank players
Santiago Leon
from different areas
Ryan Christa
not point plays. Yeah, played in different areas and different times, you know, you know, 30 points a game and 75 you know, might be different than you know, 30 points a game and then I go joiner might actually go to 50 points he because Bastos is so much harder to come by.
Santiago Leon
Something will play look at the final two episodes are this weekend, nine and 10. The last dance We will probably looking at the Pacer series and obviously the NBA Finals against Utah Jazz I would like to see after the one two championship, the decision making the goodbyes and things like that, but we’ll see. Jared cross is the villain Scottie Pippen portrayed in a negative way for some people. But we’ll leave that for another
Ryan Christa
year. You You heard her that she kind of knew he had Ivan’s guys had them was wanting to be the number two guys and Jordan but he wasn’t wanting to be the number three guy and I also think he was kind of waiting for Jordan to leave because you know I think he I think the first time because he wanted to see if he wasn’t one guy and I think he put up good numbers those years Jordan played baseball,
Santiago Leon
but that wasn’t clutch
Ryan Christa
he realized he had to win the championship. He needed a Jordan
Santiago Leon
Yeah, you needed you need a you know two superstars per team, but that could be debatable for today. Anyways, ready for some predictions? Let’s do it. The only big game this weekend is a couple of them. Berisha Dortmund vs. Shaw K. Oh, four who you got. Dortmund, which is where pollicis used to play versus Shulk Oh for wish
Santiago Leon
who
Ryan Christa
Dortmund,
Santiago Leon
Dortmund. Shulk actually, Jermaine Jones play for Shulk Oh, for about 10 years ago, I think. Yeah, yeah. So that’s a US Soccer trivia. There you have it. And random question at the sports cast Twitter poll question Who was the best NBA six man in the last 30 years. Robert Ori Tony ku coach, James Harden or James Posey.
Ryan Christa
I guess you know, I think Robin was the most clutch James Harden was obviously the most skilled. I think it’s hard to put LSR without putting a mind blank The guy with Team mo Williams is a really good six man for a long time. And also GE
Unknown Speaker
Ray Allen?
Ryan Christa
blanking on it.
Santiago Leon
Number 11 wasn’t a six man. No, no, no, no he
Ryan Christa
you know he plays with a clipper.
Santiago Leon
Oh, Crawford?
Ryan Christa
Yes. Crawford? Yeah. Wow. He was a he was definitely a six. That
Santiago Leon
was a lucky guess. Yeah. You know, it’s funny because for that football, I was kind of debating it and I couldn’t think of anyone but James Posey. I mean, you consider James Posey a six, man, right? Yeah, well, Twitter has Robert already winning as 66% Tony Kook coach. He did. Tony Kook coach came in second 20% James Harden third and posing last place was zero. You think coach was better than James Harden?
Ryan Christa
No, no, absolutely not.
Santiago Leon
Well, for six man, obviously, we’re looking at the heart and back when he first started like those first couple years. I mean,
Ryan Christa
I mean, you look at the first year that Thunder went to the finals against the heat vacuum, you know, LeBron James prime. I mean, the fourth quarter the ball was in nobody else’s hand nine Durant’s and 911 percent it was harder. It just happened that was a rotation you know, harden was okay with him coming off the bench, you know, goodness gracious. I just wish that team could stay together Santiago what a what a team that would have been
Santiago Leon
It was tough. It was tough. But Robert Ori wins this poll Robert or a six man for the Houston Rockets for the Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs. So a player that has won seven championships and not saying he’s the best player ever
Ryan Christa
made a lot of playoff shots. You know, he definitely knew his role. You know, he had, you know, many possessions. He can make open threes. He had a little bit of post up game but I mean skill wise, I mean, James Harden would run circles around Robin Just kind of reminding, you know, most people you know, they think of James Harden right now they think of you know, what they see for the rockets, you know, but before that he was he was your traditional six man you come off the bench firing you know that’s what you know kind of that cold blooded you’re gonna shoot because that’s what you’re supposed to do as a six man you know kind of beat a scoring punch off the bench but yeah that’s that’s Apolo for you there’s no wrong answer.
Santiago Leon
Ryan Krista what is the best way to reach you to talk to you about Matt Jones?
Ryan Christa
Well, you you’re gonna have Justin Riley about Mack Jones. How about
Santiago Leon
NASCAR? How about how about Governor desantis saying all the sports teams and leagues good, you know, good play here in Florida?
Ryan Christa
Yeah, let’s do it.
Santiago Leon
Great weather we got all the stadiums when all the things we need I guess. There’ll be overpopulated But anyways, what is the best
Ryan Christa
Governor at the same time said he would open up the gates football stadium if any teams from California wanted to play NFL games.
Santiago Leon
That’s so that is that’s awesome. Anyways, Ryan, what is your direct line?
Ryan Christa
Oh, let’s call Matt the Mad Dog report on Twitter. Hey, I think we’re getting closer Santiago de sports. I think baseball might be our first sport. You know? MLB I’m, I guess my I think we talked about this or that I’m making a prediction I think MBA. After two weeks two says it’s just too many things to overcome. So I have a draft and let’s get ready for the 2020 21 season. feel bad for the for the bucks in the Lakers the two best teams in the league clippers, you know their time will come?
Santiago Leon
Yeah, I think NBA is very complicated league. I think that like the like the players union, even the players. There’s just so complicated, I think. Just wait till December and start and just things will be calmer. I feel Like, you know, yeah, that’s what I think
Ryan Christa
Santiago’s cancel season started in August, you know,
Santiago Leon
yeah, it’s this way.
Ryan Christa
I mean, you can get pans in there in December you know, 13 Let’s do that. I don’t know. I think as a country, we’re kinda you know, they meet as always, you know, whether it’s true or not kind of putting our hand on this, you know, second way. There’ll
Santiago Leon
be well way, way more prepared. By the second way for sure. We definitely have the testing kits and everything. So
Ryan Christa
that’s what I’m talking about. I feel like cancer I talks about second wave in 1918. But this is a 1918 2020 our technologies a lot. I think we we learned so much, we’re ready. We know how to cut it off quickly. But that I’m not a scientist and then for life.
Santiago Leon
You’re definitely As a sports expert, and part of the sports cast, which you can reach us at the sports cast dotnet, the sports cast that you could see all the stories that we cover today in this show on the sports cast on that, or visit us at the sports cast one where we carry the conversation. Right now the mag Jones and the Bryce young got debates going on and starting is brewing in and over there in Tuscaloosa. So we’ll we’ll see how things go. Of course, there’s been rumors that the Alabama ad the athletic director has been been hinting that they’ll be the college football will not start on time. So we’ll see how things go with college. Football that’s even more complicated. Probably as complicated as the NBA.
Ryan Christa
He would have to have an hour long special talk about the complexity of NCAA sports.
Santiago Leon
Very close, man. Forget that.
Ryan Christa
Because you got two different things. I promised in my last segment what college was professional sports. You can make money by just hosting games. Because the TV money and almost all the professional sports is great. The only things you don’t need the fans and college It is hard to justify playing the games if the fans aren’t there because the money from gates and feel is so important. Yes, they Yes. Will they conferences? Yeah, do they have cinelli but not funny million? $5 million? Yes. You see you guys, it’s nothing compared to $500 million that the NFL gets from CBS in the NFL. And, you know, so it’s a totally different way, you know, and if you don’t, you know, I think the simplest solution I really talks about the college football is only playing conference games but there that would decimate everything but the group of our five that would literally kill the group of five because how does the group of five work? They they feel you know, They play those games that beginning of the season against you know, the power five and that fills up their, their payroll for the season. So you take away those games. You’re definitely hurting the economy of college sports in general because I thought as I’m playing, you know Townsend this year, Townsend isn’t going to be able to afford to have their soccer team and their women’s soccer you know, women’s lacrosse or all those other sports pay for because their football is the numbers on the games don’t get slaughtered, but that’s how they fund their team. So anyways, that’s just kind of you know, a little bit of the economy of Salesforce and how there’s so much riding on college football coming up this fall.
Santiago Leon
And there you have it falls on the sports cast on ever the latest scheduling will definitely be part our of our news. And we’ll have kallu on tomorrow. Talk a little bit more about the NBA and what’s happening as well in the NFL and of course well Some more last dance talks because those, those aren’t as exciting even though those stores have been 20 years old, but a lot of good revelation This is better than last in the office. Anyways, Ryan, I got no time left. We got to go. God bless and I’ll see you next week, right.
Ryan Christa
God bless everybody.
