NFL owners approve three rule changes for 2020 season

Posted on May 28, 2020 by Santiago Leon

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Thursday that the league owners gave approval to three rule change proposals that will go into effect this upcoming season.

According to Pelissero, proposal Nos. 2, 8 and 9 from the list that was made public by the league earlier this month received approval from the owners, with a least 75 percent of the owners voting in favor of each. Effective this season, the league will see a permanent expansion of automatic replay reviews to include scoring plays/turnovers negated by a foul (2), expanded defenseless player protection for kick and punt returners (8), and the prevention of teams from manipulating the game clock with multiple deal-ball fouls (9).

One of the most notable and radical proposals for the 2020 season, submitted by the Philadelphia Eagles, was for the league to usher in an alternative to onside kicks: A 4th-and-15 attempt from one’s own 25-yard-line. The rule, however, was tabled for further discussion, according to Pelissero. Had league owners voted on the proposal and it passed, the rule would have seen the opposing team take over possession from wherever the play ended if the team with the ball did not convert. There would also be limits in place as to how many times per game a team could utilize the attempt.
