So, football season is underway. Well not underway. Yes, it is underway college football’s definitely underway NFL has just got done with their training camps things are are you know just going with that but let’s go into Alabama update Steven give us an update what’s going on in Tuscaloosa?

All right now Santiago and Justin are the team in week three now week three now have a fall camp and everybody healthy as we speak right now and Nick Saban knocking on wood that it remains that way. The the new the new strap back in March Boston, a great job coming For my Indiana University but the Todd had its first scrimmage on last week at Bryant Denny, our first live action scrimmage. And among the notes that were that were given to me by different people around the program. First guy that really stood out was Mack John’s me How about Mack Jones at the first scrimmage. This scrimmage was set up for the defense to have it The office is going to run out but even with that, you know Jones cool composed the pocket had pressure all in his grill, the entire scrimmage and steel through for three touchdowns. A one went to john bedsheet one went to nachi Harris one went to Jamil Billingsley a tight in so there we see no Jones calm cool collected under pressure. Bryce young did not scrimmage on up over the weekend was a little bit Stickley, but he’s back at practice today. He was back at practice today was one, Bryce Sean by Mack Jones. Well, in the first scrimmage on running backs, all the running backs did well all the running backs did well. Now she had a great day Trey Sanders, Brian Robinson, Jace McClellan has an absolute gear to him. But the guy that stole the show was a freshman or Roger Williams, not just a speed, got freshman, running back to be able to pass blocks. He was able to do that very well. The wide receivers it’s gonna be wide receiver by committee behind wattle and divine taste Smith. JOHN met she did some great things. Jay, Bob Baker looked good. Slade Bolden had some good catches out there. So it’s gonna be kind of a wide receiver by committee behind Smitty and Wattled I had a guy that was literally stuttering on the phone with me for about 10 minutes. I had to get him to come I’m down, but once he was like Steven, this past rush at Alabama, oh my god, it’s back and I was like, dude, explain to me what you’re talking about here. So he’s like the freshman linebackers William Anderson and drew Sanders. They were kidding the pocket all scrimmage long I was told will Anderson have between three to five sacks? drew Sanders was flying every week a madman with his hair on fire. Dylan Moses awesome Christian Harris was everywhere. The defensive front Good luck trying to run on the light bar more on the Brian rea and DJ Dale and even guys in the secondary stepped up. So the first scrimmage it kind of looked like 2012 Alabama, where you had the offense move the ball score some points, but you had a defense I was flying around.

This time stop by the defensive line Steven. how nasty is it gonna be up front you just mentioned one of our favorites Christian balm or how’s the Brian Ray looking right now?

I mean looking like he was never hurt last year just I mean back healthy from the foot. He changed his jersey, so he’s now golf and number 89 number 1818 since high school, so yeah, James Clemens. Hi, Matt and Madison, Alabama. So he switched his number of blocks. I mean, exploding. his hips, foot looks really good quickness. Is there speed? Is there agility? Is there. A Brian race back to 100% and one of the things he talked about was the love he has for Freddie Roach. Freddie Roach has come down here and he has injected some energy, some fire some personality, some no nonsense, he has come in here and he has injected some Bama principles into this defensive line. Now of course we know Freddie Roach is from the state. He played in backer for the time. From Oh 1205 so Friday knows what it is and to have been back in here, no Coach Saban talked about it he his his personality, it fits the chemistry with this defensive staff. Everybody has come around coach Roach and thing of this year and he wants nothing he wants nothing less than these guys being dominant in the trenches.

Definitely just going back to the freshman linebackers will Anderson Andrew Sanders those in the Senate and the secondary Brian branch and malikai more, both of those to play in the star position and Nicole Brian branch the first team and Nicole, the guys got Minka Fitzpatrick type of tendencies. He is a high night safety. Brian branch is and they love him already. We’re Malecon Morris concern Probably not the highlight safety that Brian branch is, but malikai. To me, it’s the black version of Benny sunsail. And that’s because because many people forget when Vinnie was here, Vinny was smart, instinctive, intelligent Thumper can lay the wood newer as Adi was supposed to be at New all the roles of the secondary and cut make plays on top of that, and people forget the 2013 season. You know, Benny six against Virginia Tech, picks it up against Texas a&m and Johnny football. And if he doesn’t get hurt, you know, that team was a national championship in 2013. So I can be quite Mallika to that role. But malikai to me is the black being Steria. I was told that there was a play at the scrimmage where no Matt Jones does a pass to Miller forestall and forced all trucks to turn up field and tight in Malecon Moore comes running down hill bad intentions and just lay bore stall to the ground.

When I first saw him on Sunday, and he’s kind of leading up then throughout the time we’ve had, he just looks ready. And he just, it looks like a physical specimen. He looks like he has it all together, you know, upstairs and he just looks like a veteran is ready to explode that you get that kind of feel about him as well.

I got the feel. I’ll rather It drew I see two former players and I look at Drew. So a lot of people are speaking that will Anderson has more of a pop. He has more the pass rush ability. But when I look at drew Sanders, I see the anger of Ryan Anderson la angew true. So I see the anger of Ryan Anderson, but I but I see the multiple. I see the multiple position play of dentally because when we’re dealing was more than a caveman type. He played multiple, he played multiple spots, and outside linebacker when I see Drew, I kind of see a more refined a more polished version of Denali.

Okay, man, I love to hear that Okay, in this circle back to fray Roach man, I like you said he was just an Alpha Dog when he played at Alabama. He was there when I was there. And the guy just had it man. He’s got that mentality. This saving loves Talk about just how much of a difference maker he’s gonna be for this defense and honestly feel like he was what was missing last year.

Just to be absolutely was just to me, you look at coach Roach in here, and the depth that you have on this line, we’re talking three or four deep the depth that you have on this line. This could be a team right here defensively, that could get 60 sacks. 60 sacks for this team is not out of the realm of possibility. Because you have a bunch of players that are really hungry that are gung ho about we did not finish the right way last year. We have not finished the white way the last two years. And part of that is you didn’t have the right personalities in the room players as well as coaches. Players in terms of no guys not taking the practices seriously guys taking plays off God’s not working hard enough. No, God’s not having those leadership traits that to where when you walk into the mouth more players complex, or you walk into Bryant Denny, there are certain terms there certain words on the wall that were the core principles, the core values of alabama football, you walk in, you see was like energy and effort and toughness and commitment and pride and you know all these words on the wall that embody what alabama football is. And for most of the time before a lot of time, most of the time last the last two years, you have not seen those core values be brought to fruition So now with a Freddie Roach in here, that I have those personalities in terms of players out of the room, and you have more guys that want to see those core values demonstrated in the room this season for this defense, it is not out of the realm of possibility to see 67 I mean, we saw before stats in 2016. So see 16 this year? Definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

So Steven, how would you rate this team? How’s it looking like, of course to have a tough schedule this upcoming season. But what are your prediction for Alabama? With the season coming up

Stephen M. Smith
with the season coming up Santiago and I have been back and forth a lot of people on this because you look at ESP and their FPI, the football power index, it’s got Bama winning nine games, I have a tn and though a loss could come from anybody, it’s tough to kind of pinpoint where the loss could come from, because you’ve got Texas a&m on the schedule where the main question is, you know, Kevin, mon, right. Can he take that next step? What is hindering mom from taking that next step as a quarterback so that so that’s the With a&m with Ole Miss, we know what Lane Kiffin can do all offensively. And he’s got out of all offensive pieces. But defensively what is Ole Miss? Because we really don’t quite know. with Georgia Kirby smart sounded very concerned. After the Bulldogs first scrimmage. She sounded concerned with his all fans. And after his first team defensive unit, he sounds concerned, the guys after know those players, when you look at LSU, it seems like they’re losing everything but the kitchen sink. I mean, every single second a player is opting out from playing at LSU. So you’re trying to figure out can add all your own field, a team and the upcoming season so it’s kind of very difficult here to pinpoint where the loss could come from, especially with what’s going on and how healthy Alabama has been how hungry Alabama has been. I mean, my goodness. Joshua mcmillon spoke today. And Josh McMillan talked about the question I was too to him was no Josh How difficult was was the decision for you to come back for your six year? He was like what difficulty wasn’t difficult at all. I got a bad taste in my mouth from what happened last year. That is not that’s not how we finish. That’s not how alabama football is. He was like Gods like I was here in 2013 we had killers like Reggie Ragland. rueben foster in and all of those guys and with them it was them. It was like, we don’t end the season without a championship. So I mean, with that being said, you know, these guys are hungry for your championship.

Okay, so right now right now I will look at the Georgia game just because of the other factors with Caribbean for Kirby coach and the dogs and Scott Cochran over there now so the Georgia game has a bit more anticipation.

So what do you feel like the trap games gonna be you mentioned Texas a&m you know if Kettleman folly has that year we all been waiting on. That could be a test for us as well. As far as getting past Georgia, I think it’ll be a contest. I think both sides would be up, but I really don’t feel like it. It’ll be a loss for us. I feel okay. Okay.

What? Well, for LSU I think she’s doing 20% Stadium. So 20% Stadium so they could have some fans in there and just going down to LSU. It’s still that that atmosphere, but we’re not overlooking them from that perspective. It’s just the play on the field. Will they have will they really have kind of the players to match shot? That’s my thing.

Yeah, um, I want to touch on something that Steven mentioned earlier with jossan. Seems like the atmosphere is kind of changed as far as how tough things are on the players. Dede, I know, Coach Saban and everybody was tough on you guys. Do you feel like he’s lightened up just a little bit?

Yeah, he lives Number I’m seeing a lot of stuff that they do. Does on the field like wearing different clothes in all the other gear on the on band leave bands and stuff like that. We weren’t allowed to do all that. But now they are doing pretty much doing their own like, it’s crazy. They said he lined up a lot of beer.

Now, we got some players there showing up late to practice not showing up at all going and going, you know halfway what would happen to warn you guys that if y’all were pulled that

Steven, how is how is like the COVID protocols doing for Alabama is have been pretty strict or you don’t see much of a difference on a normal season.

I mean For the players, for the players for the players has been strict. I mean, Coach Saban has been very adamant about you know, making sure guys like keep your mask on and really practice and social distancing when you’re outside of the program. There’s been a lot of older guys telling younger guys, hey, we know you want to party, you know, do you want to go to bars, things like that. But you know, you have responsibility to yourself and Austin’s team to be safe out there in your surroundings, especially when it comes to it’s been strength in terms of the players when it comes. Read more students. Not as much. They’re still out there. You know, not necessarily, I mean, definitely store with the students, the students. There’s a lot out there, you know, going to different places and not taking the necessary precautions and now you’ve got no cut. You’ve got Athletics Director Greg barn and Bob Got meltwater back to Tuscaloosa involved. There’s so many people involved to keep this thing from really getting increasingly out of hand. But the players have been stricto

Johnston, how have the covid protocols been for you guys in high school?

I’m a It’s crazy. They got to wear the mask on at practice and on the sideline of the game and just trying to keep all the guys in the same circle. Like we tell them not to hang out with two minute to minute people and just stand within a circle because if anybody wants to get the cold we will. We’ll be down for two weeks and it’s not good for the program.

I leave last year he had what one or two rushing touchdowns. That’s not that’s not good out of a guy that you expect to be your franchise or the face of your franchise or that offense. But from what I’ve gathered his his, his attitude is kind of been questionable. So it doesn’t really come as a shock to me right now.

it didn’t take me longer we will pretty much run all the schemes that were in Alabama, pretty much easy to just speed up in just really very, very detail. They want the smallest details to be you want they want it perfect. I mean, I know no such thing is perfect, but in the league, I know they pretty much want everything I did know Didn’t know tool just just being him just being the leader that he is I know he can do what he needs to do to get the job job done. You know,

You gotta give a lot of credit to not just a Greg Sankey of the SEC, but also the ACC in the big 12 for just moving the season back and just seeing how everybody else kind of adjust to it. So at first I know the big 10 was talking about having it during the time of Thanksgiving. But now that they’ve jumped it up to October 10. I would hope that they could do about them because you have a lot of great people. layers in the big tn headline by one headline by one Justin fields the quarterback of Ohio State so hopefully they could have this done by October 10 but just going off about first initial reaction they absolutely jumped the gun

I still think that the playoffs I think if they get the big 10 to jump in and play at that time, then absolutely you do and until something happens that tells us well we got to stop playing you know the PAC 12 or pack two don’t want to put their ball in the in the yard that’s fine.
