Marvin Constant
know what that means. Right? That means you should move out of Ole Miss and Mississippi State territory.

Justin Riley
You know, I think you’re right. You know, I think it’s a sabotage all around because you know what, they just don’t appreciate what Alabama brings because they never had it so they don’t know how

Marvin Constant
exactly.

Justin Riley

Oh, we’re gonna have a lot of fun you see I dressed casual today. I like the collared shirt upstairs. We don’t make it casual Friday fun day baby.

Justin Riley
Man I fully expect you to be decked out with your Alabama gear helmet everything Oh man. Works two fellows this game rig coach. As I said, Yeah, it’s game week for the SEC. We don’t have to force ourselves to watch the ACC big 12 and whatever else are thrown at us. We are finally here. Hey, how about each of you go through back when you were players? What’s your daily routine was leading up to kick off against sec opponent.

Marvin Constant
Hold on Tama scratch real quick before we get started. There’s one person in particular that I’m going to talk about his game day ritual. He always used to do this own bus number one with us. He already know what I’m gonna say big saying what did you always do before every game?

Chris Samuels
I really do. Don’t know but I know that I did my senior year because I used to get so worked up, it’s I would always throw up

Marvin Constant
exactly

Chris Samuels
that was probably from the citizens club or going on the strip the night before. We were on curfew, but I don’t know what it was. I’ve never really had that problem until my senior year. And I think that I was just putting so much pressure on myself of making it to the NFL, you know, making money to take care of my family for my juices will be flowing but every time I eat a big pregame meal, and right before we would go out I would always go in the bathroom and you will hear me hacking it up in the back and then I will come out it’s time to play.

Marvin Constant
I started riding bus number two

Chris Samuels
so so for me, I mean it was pretty much the throw up gig but um, I would always pretty much pray you know in the locker room you know, I pray for my safety I pray for the safety of our team and also the other team I didn’t want to see anybody get injured and I was I just tried to lead you know, and lead by example on the field and vocally and go out and get our wins

Justin Riley
What about you Jared? How did you usually prepare

Jarrett Johnson
um, on game day you know, it kind of depended on whether it was an early game a night game you know whatever how my routine I would say the only thing that stayed consistent was you know always got into course in college you know rode the bus over and NFL you drove yourself but always try to get to the stadium early spend some time in your own head spend some time and in the playbook and I would say the one route that I mean assuming that I maintain high school college and pros always took time for whatever reason I’d go in the in the shower usually right before we go out on the field being full pads and I had a you know just a little prayer that I’d say and go into the mountain time to kind of get my own head and make sure I was in the right headspace to take the field but you know but you know your game your game day routine in college she knows was a long time ago I don’t really remember exactly what I did. But I do always remember a time you know long get my head right and get ready to go do whatever whatever it is yet go do.

Justin Riley
Alright, and what about you?

Evan Mathews
Yeah, in college was always important, really trying to get a good night, not asleep before. And then play the game, like Jared said depends on the time the date of the game is some of the things I can remember doing. The pregame meal was probably roughly about four hours before the game. One of the one of the funny memories I had when it comes to pregame meals when we had coach Fran frangioni we had three options for pregame meal, it was either baked potato pancakes or spaghetti and they came around and you just pick one of those and you ate a lot of basically they carved you up for the game then get over the stadium. Try to make sure you’re hydrated maybe take another final look at the playbook talk to my line mates about some possible situations we might end up in let’s do some music get get all hyped up and then go out and smash them heads.

Justin Riley
Right on right on. Jemaine we know what you do on Sundays and what does game day look like for you?

Funnymaine
Well, first of all, you remember in elementary school and they had one of those things is not like the other question. That’s what I feel like right now. Oh, but no as a fan. Um, I’ve got a new new ritual that I’ve had for the past eight years. Um, and it started during the during the Bama LSU game with the TJ yeldon catching run at the end. I was watching with some friends. Mojo was not great. Just wasn’t feeling it. The team wasn’t feeling it. I thought we ran for a while I was very frustrated. I never even saw the TJ yeldon catch and run live cuz I left the house just knowing we won’t take an ale I was upset I wasn’t having a good time at the watch party. By the time I got in the car and turn on the radio and found the station I hear he like goes voice you know with the famous calls and he don’t he’s going to push down and ever since then I just have trouble not watching the game by myself. So if I’m if I’m ever watched Party and the team is doing bad, I will get up and leave by using just watch it like on the couch by myself so that ever since then, You know, I just believe in watching games by myself so that’s that’s my new thing. I know it sounds horrible but that’s that’s kind of a thing.

Justin Riley
No Actually I’m right there with you I do the exact same thing and plus people can’t put up with me getting mad. I feel that Alright guys, which player player on the other side of the ball during practice best prepared you for lead play? If y’all want to say Marvin constant I totally get that.

Unknown Speaker
Marvin set this question up I believe I didn’t know.

Unknown Speaker
We just talked about this about a week ago when he asked me

Marvin Constant
it was not me.

Unknown Speaker
Yes, no, no, listen, so we had this play. And Martin was kind of running scout team defense at the time was that your your freshman year? And you know, Marvin came in and grown man, he looked like he man built, he was ready, you know. And I remember they had this particular Blitz on and it was kind of like a delayed Blitz and Marvin came and you know, pretty much you know, I was big man, you know, senior, whatever, and knocking most people down that practice. And Marvin came full speed hit a steam right at me and I just stepped in just knowing I’m gonna knock him down. He put me flat on my ass he did. I was so embarrassed, and I was so pissed off and we repeated the play. So the next play he came, I pretty much knew the Blitz was coming. I was prepared this time. So I grabbed Marvin and cheap, cheaply Body Slam him. So So Neil Callaway, which was the offensive line coach. At the time, the next day in the meeting, we’re watching film, and he rewinds the playground Marvin crushes me like four or five times I was so embarrassed. So I just kept to get to the next play. Get to the next model was a hell of a football player. instinctive, powerful, strong passion for the game. And he brought intensity he definitely got us prepared to play.

Marvin Constant
Well, thank you, brother. Thank you. Welcome. Amy. You Outland Trophy winner number three overall key Hall of Fame eight.

Unknown Speaker
Thank you. But we’ve all been on our backside at one time or another brother.

Marvin Constant
He Oh, we have a when I tell you. I got TJ practice one day June. But folk lately I’m standing around the path. I just took my whole nepsac laughs

Justin Riley
All right, Jared, who is that guy for you?

Unknown Speaker
Ah, well, I will say it’s not big Sam because getting as blood every play by Big fan don’t do anything to build confidence.

Jarrett Johnson
Yeah, big fan was a

Unknown Speaker
he was you know, a senior as a freshman. And you know them guys, they want a different level when I was when I was, you know, a young 18 year old freshmen but definitely learned a lot from them. And I would say that, um, you know, set it, you know, Chris Samuels and Cornelius Griffin and being around those guys. I didn’t know it at the time. But they probably prepared me more to deal with adversity than any other point in my career because the next year you know, we preseason ranked number three, a lot of preseason high but we did not realize the loss of those seniors what was going to do to our team and unfortunately didn’t have the group to replace that. And so I would say from a leadership standpoint, and not just rah rah stuff, but it’s legitimate leadership you know, as a grown man being around big Sam and Cornelius Griffin those guys did a lot for my career. You know and then and then Evan and Justin smile and Wesley Brett coming in the year after me. And then I’m the older guy, and then I get a chance to show that you know, approach to the game to them and then man what a what a group of athletes they became and it was all built around the offensive line and and went on all of them went on to have good careers and whether it’s college or pro or or whatever. But um, but you have the two of the players right here on this on this thing is did a lot for me and my career.

Unknown Speaker
Thank you, Jay. You are a hell of a player Americans. You didn’t read first your Richard Gere. And you cannot make them in the world. No, but you did a hell of a job doing join Kenny King. Yeah. And you guys play ball right away and made a deep impact and gained a lot of depth our defensive line began.

Marvin Constant
Jared showed up with that grown man pickup truck so we knew he made big red rock. Yes.

Unknown Speaker
That’s right. Jerry, you know, a funny story there. Remember we scrimmage, the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. And we had to do one on one. And I had to go against you. So I’m thinking, this is Dan from college, you know, there was a grown man there. I mean, all grown man. And you know, I had the spinal stenosis, the narrow disc in my neck, so any slight wrong hit, could literally shut down my nervous system and I will be paralyzed temporarily for a few seconds. And we lined up and it’s me and Jared, Jared was ready. And we collided helmet the helmet facemask the face mask, and I had another episode of going numb, my arms went numb my upper body, I couldn’t feel anything. And right then and now when it comes to like, coach, I’m done for the day. You notice I didn’t scrimmage That day you did it to me.

Jarrett Johnson
Memories their scrimmages

Chris Samuels
say well,

Unknown Speaker
I said let me tell you one of my favorite memories about their scrimmages. We used to scrimmage all the time. So you know the Miami put a lot of our players on linebackers and DBS linebackers in particular they don’t change their jersey numbers for practice by Ray Lewis have number one. Terrelle sucks to be like number four, but all of them would have single digit numbers. Some of y’all guys did the same thing. And as I just went all the starters, they pulled him out and it was just young guys on the field. And he’s out there scrimmaging. They’re numb to Aikens, and he’s dying, he can roll on and he smashed people and it’s supposed to be to have tight practice, and he’s going live knocking dudes out and I’m like, bro, who is this? Number two? Who is number two? And I’m like, asking people and come find out that Who was it? Can’t remember

Chris Samuels
who was it?

Unknown Speaker
It was um, big. galleon was my mind. Big Sean Taylor. From

Unknown Speaker
complete animal wants to feel no

Jarrett Johnson
later find out the scrimmage with the rookies. It was like he won’t come off the field.

Unknown Speaker
I still tell that story. That was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen is a bonafide superstar arguably one of the best at all time would not come off the field. He’s out there, lighten up. rookies, you know, he had aka black visor wearing. We

Unknown Speaker
love Sean. He was a beast man. It would be some days and you know the humidity gets pretty high up here. Not like oh, yeah, it gets hot up here. And you know, he’s from Miami, Florida. We’re at practice. You got linemen with fat good hanging out rolling their jerseys up. You know, everybody’s trying to stay cool. And you look at Sean Taylor. He’s out there with a fall sleeves for long pants under his shift his past. I mean, he didn’t care about mental toughness. I mean, he was on a whole nother level. And he was just an awesome player awesome guys to tragedy what happened to him. We truly Miss on and like you said, probably go down to be the greatest safe to ever to play the game, man.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, no, no, that’s off the subject or whatever. But he brought up their scrimmages. And I talked about that, that all the time is a player of that caliber, you know, and in somebody that I didn’t get, you know, I didn’t know personally but being on the field guys like that. You always remember that was one of the coolest things about their scrimmages. No doubt.

Unknown Speaker
You know, another stressful thing about him. He wanted most of the time when you have a superstar safety or corner or somebody they’re limited on special teams. Shawn went to the coach and said I need to be on every special team. He wanted to play everything. Yeah, everything. Yeah.

Chris Samuels
We’ve been running out.

Evan Mathews
Good man. Now

Justin Riley
man Great stories

Unknown Speaker
. Now Yo, yo, you gave me time to remind reminded me of a few things when I was. I was I grew up a diehard Alabama fan. And when I went to my official visit, it was Chris It was your senior year. I forget who we were playing but I remember the first thing I wanted to do we got a locker match the game. First thing I want to do was go up and shake your hand. I just walked up to you. That’s it. What’s up, Chris Nice to meet you just want to say you’re the man. Those those big for me. Um, and then next coming in just as a you know, I was a really small offensive lineman. And I got to go against guys like Marvin and practice and then I’d say what later in my career, or not just like not just late in my career, but that year and those few years after that. Going against guys like Jared Johnson, Kendall Morehead, Kenny Kane, Antwan Odom, Anthony Bryan every day in practice, you know, I was, I was blessed to be able to go against that kind of talent non stop to just help myself, you know, continue to get better and better because you couldn’t I mean, you couldn’t go out there and slack against those kind of players. especially someone like Jared who’s just you know, 100% every single play. That’s right.

Marvin Constant
All right, Evan, I can’t Can I can I can I talk to you for a second?

Evan Mathews
Yeah, look what you got.

Marvin Constant
So, so I was talking to Roman and Roman said, Hey, why don’t you ask Evan? About in the being in the nightclub? That’s what ghosties How did that factor into your playing? Yeah,

Unknown Speaker
um, yeah, you know, I’ve always had some interest in hobbies and stuff on the side. But yeah, like the club and the glow sticks. Um, I think. I think one of the guys that ran one of the bars called me a techno kid. Loving that the dance music and that techno stuff. But uh, yeah, I try not to do that kind of stuff on the weekends before the games after the game. And that was my post game routine.

Evan Mathews
Hey. Would you say Derrick

Unknown Speaker
was wearing a platinum grill before Platinum grills were cool.

Unknown Speaker
pictures are they funny? Funny story. Actually, when I was with the Panthers, this was my rookie year. And these people must have thought I was an idiot. I was I was I went to this jeweler. And I saw he was making grills and I was I was just going to get you know, some some white gold fronts top and bottoms. I was getting them made. And you know, they were supposed to just go pop in and pop out. And this guy goes and he pops the bottom on lawn. And they will not come off. They will not come off. And this is the Saturday before a game. And I have to go back I have I can it doesn’t come off. I got a bottle of gold grill stuck in my mouth. And I got to go to the stadium the day before game as a rookie with these gold teeth in my mouth. Try not to get noticed. And then I got noticed I was laughing stock the locker room and I had to go to a dentist that Monday to he had to get in there. I mean, he was in there sparks flying and everything to cut this thing out. He took it out. He’s like ooh, I don’t think we’re gonna get that out. That we did but I try to block that in the back of my head. Yeah.

Justin Riley
Your main here remain here. Now this man these guys we used to watch every Saturday. What’s the first thought that comes to your mind when they tell

Unknown Speaker
you these things? Man, I’m in heaven right now as but to hear, you know, the accolades for my cousin, Marvin. We’re not fake cousins are moms or sisters. So he lived my dream. You know, it was always my dream to play for Bama. I was always hardcore Bama fan and we’re both the same age graduated in 98. But when we you know when we went into high school, we were both about five eight. He kept growing, growing and more so I’m stuck at five nine and uh you know he was just so proud of him you know through his days as central and to hear these guys you know talk about his athletic prowess and it is just making me even more proud because he was such a crybaby when we were little see him grow into an all sec linebackers. It’s amazing, but uh, I don’t think you guys realize man as fans like y’all names never leave our head like right aka run for office. Y’all could sail cars y’all say we as Bama fans the names you know Jared Johnson and Chris Samuels and ever met they’re there it’s in here like they don’t go anywhere like so to just sit here and soak up these you know stories and personal time with john man as a fan I tell you it’s amazing.

Chris Samuels
Thank you so much.

Justin Riley
Let’s go back to yells beginning at Alabama. Can each of you talk about the transition to the college game hurdles you face? And then when you finally hit your stride Chris I like to start with you because I actually heard you talk about this on previous podcast.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, um, I’ll be honest with you guys, man. You guys wouldn’t around when I first got the college because I was older but you know coming from you know, Shaw, high school and Mobile Alabama. I was the big man. And you know, I pretty much you know, was the leader, tough guy. All of a sudden, we get to, you know, the University of Alabama and we finally arrived on campus. So we go have a rookie meeting. And once we got through with the rookie meeting, the rookie dinner we go back to Brian Hall, which was the door all of a sudden we get to the door. We pull up and we hear about 30 to 40 players screaming out of the building. Now get your SS up here. Get up here right now. Get up here. So we come upstairs, and we basically had to run the gauntlet. So we got torture, you know. And we had a run down the hallway in our underwear. And when you make it to the end, then you get embraced, you know, because you’re a part of the Brotherhood at that point. And I’m nervous as hell. I mean, you got guys like Kindred Burton, which, you know, he’s six, five, probably every better 275 ripped up wrong, man. I didn’t even have facial hair at the time. You know, and you got all of these built wrong men in there, and they’re challenging you. But at the end of the day, remember michael moore mukhi he was the first one he was wide open country boy from fear. He ran down got his tail v. I ran down got my tail be my underwear rip totally off. Um, but naked. We didn’t shower in high school. You know what, everybody so everybody’s kind of grabbing themselves at the end of the hallway. It was an amazing time. We only had two guys at the time. That didn’t run down the gauntlet and I’m gonna call him out. I don’t care. shamar Buchanan was too scared to do it. No way to do this. I don’t have to do this. And his dad was in there. And his dad was like, you’re gonna run down you’re gonna run that but he was doing. I’m telling on him. And also Michael Vaughn are no scared to death. They they’re the only and we had a small class were like 13 players. All right, and we had to sprint down and that was it. You get your tail beat mattresses, thrown out milk thrown on the water and didn’t embrace you. You’re part of the brother. But those two guys I’m calling him out. They pumped out they wouldn’t do it. But fast forward. A lot of people don’t notice but my freshman year I was such a crybaby I came in I just say I couldn’t finish drills our strength coach TJ was hard on me. Danny pyramid was hard on me the Titans coach at Clemson, I was a crybaby 6am workouts I couldn’t finish they would send me to the side to make me bear crawl by myself because I couldn’t keep up with the metrics. And literally, I was kind of a laughingstock. But then going into that spring, I made my mind up, I said I’m not popping out again. And once I finished all those math drills that day, I finally finished it gets it to the side. And a teacher came to me and then pyramid came to me on the last drill. And they told me they said we are so proud of you You finally manned up you finally finished. And I was so out of breath. I just threw up everywhere all over the term came to me said you know what? I’m proud of you. But one thing that should have helped my flow. Basically, that was the turning point for me. And the thing is, I had all of the ability in the world but the mental toughness wasn’t there. And those guys, the coaches there and the older players, they made me a grown man. And once I went through that and family stepped up mentally, no turning back for me and then had you know a great career at Bama and then went on into the Pro. So definitely everything that I went through everything that I learned at Bama, I went through a lot of adversity in NFL with a lot of different injuries. But I was always able to battle through simply because of what I learned. I remember those guys made me a man.

Marvin Constant
Hey Chris, You’ve moved on real carefully in that game. Yeah, you can do both looking at

Unknown Speaker
Oh my god. I you know, I didn’t play the Orange Bowl because I had the knee problem. And I played on an all year long. And we played on the turf in the SEC championship against Florida. My knee literally blew up like a balloon. And you know, coaches trying to push me to play but at that point, I knew my knee was shot. I needed to shut it down. And I played on it all year long. And I had a great time in Miami. I knew I wasn’t playing in the game against Tom Brady and all those guys. And I party every single day on this curfew every single day. One time we were going to like a team event. And I was on the bus so hungover so drunk, Coach DuBose just looked at me and shook his head

Marvin Constant
at me

Chris Samuels
That’s right. That’s why we had a great time man.

Unknown Speaker
Because he reminded me of some some nightmare stories of that. That would they call that hell night? Is that

Chris Samuels
yes. Oh yeah, that

Unknown Speaker
my year that was rough. We walked over there like you said everyone’s in their underwear. I made sure I put on I put on some tighty whities and some boxers because I knew I was gonna get because you’re gonna get paddle going down now. I think you get paddled. To start you don’t need a paddle with a paddle you to let you know when you suck

Evan Mathews
the gauntlet.

Unknown Speaker
Then we also had a little talent show type thing where they’re throwing stuff on you dumping water from out of the building. I was getting hit with a golf club and

Evan Mathews
in the pyre the pipe from a beer wiffle ball bat

Jarrett Johnson
wiffle ball bat

Evan Mathews
and I was I just remember crying

And then and then they, and then they shaved our head and our eyebrows. Oh no. I got one

Marvin Constant
was was a gerrits class for every class. Somebody fell in the bushes in their stick about bush and doing the talent show who fell in those bushes.

Jarrett Johnson
I think Josh Parker

Unknown Speaker
is a quarterback. He’s a quarterback from Tallahassee, and he, I guess he was like cleantalk girlfriend, and everybody found out about it, and he got up on that wall in front of holly bushes. And normally you tell him where you from? You sing a song and all he would say his name and they was only

Jarrett Johnson
they’d rep that wiffle ball bat would take

Unknown Speaker
good malbay would throw you in jail for doing this stuff.

Evan Mathews
Yeah, absolutely.

Unknown Speaker
Okay. It is. It ended with a with it with it into a francione. And I will say like it got it got a little out of hand. I don’t think it was Evans class was bad. But the class after that. There’s some stuff that just it wasn’t what, you know, there were, you know, like when they embraced you, Chris. At the end. I was like, you know, welcome to the team. They did y’all did the same thing to my class. They didn’t do that to those classes. They was they was out for blood on the board. It was probably good that it ended.

Unknown Speaker
There was a pass along the trauma getting worse and worse. The next class. Yeah, yeah.

Justin Riley
Man, Jermaine, here and all this. Did you have to go through anything like that going to come up through the comedy circuit?

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, well, on the comedy in the hazing that I got, I got I got cursed out by a few guys that are calling my mentors. Now. Now find out that, you know, getting cursed out by Rickey smiley, Kevin Hart

Funnymaine
that Chris Rock, but he got close.

Unknown Speaker
Oh, what they would it was in the comedy world if they liked you. And they are hard on you. You know, so they saw something in me, and they were kind of hard on me. But listen to these stories. I didn’t realize how good I had it as a fan, and having a cousin that. I hung out with all the guys like all the time, it was nothing to go over to I believe I’ll stay at the Highlands and hackberry and my cousin was in building elf so I could pop up anytime and boom hanging out with some Alexander hanging out with Freddy millons I’m hanging and it became so regular. That you know when we go out and all the girls is like, ah, like him. But no, I really had like the, like the inside track and I think I didn’t appreciate it as much back then. But I think it was a good thing because I went from looking at the guys like celebrities and gods to like, these are real guys. Like I know some of their parents like I know their family. So they were very humanized. But I never got to hung out, hang out with a with the big big guys on here. But that would have that would have been something hanging out with glow sticks.

Marvin Constant
Roman Romans.

Evan Mathews
I just I just saw that comment you were talking about man.

Justin Riley
Jared, we talked about this earlier. You know, it felt like you hit you hit your stride pretty early in Alabama. You contributed in a large way even as a freshman like we talked about. And course that catapulted us to the SEC title, the first one since 92. How were you able to come in right away and be such a force?

Jarrett Johnson
You talking to me?

Justin Riley
Yeah.

Jarrett Johnson
I’m sorry. You skipped when I missed the first part of your question. It skipped out on. Um, so when I came in, you know, I would say um, you know, honestly, I wanted to read share it. I didn’t think I was ready. I came from a very small school. And you know, I was pretty big and in high school. And I was either bigger, you know, the most the kids but if they’re my size, they’re really slow. So it was a really big adjustment for me coming in Alabama and the guys are not only as big or bigger, but they can also move and you know, used to Take me can all those things so, um, but they threw me in the fire. I backed up. Kenna Morehead my freshman year and Cornelius Griffin. But it was good. It was trial by fire and I just kind of had to learn as I went. And, you know, I probably didn’t play real well, the beginning of the year. But as the year went on, I got a little better a little better and was probably my most productive game was in the SEC championship. But it was it was definitely a learning curve. You know, I don’t know who the right call but, you know, you know, it worked out, you know, and you know, it’s it is what it is. But it was, it was tough, you know, going in, they had a really good offensive line. Paul Hogan was the center, and now they grip Red Mill. And then of course, you know, big Sam, you know, he was pretty much impossible to be. But it just just made you better.

Justin Riley
to piggyback off that, you know, Evan, you basically did the same thing coming off your redshirt season. Matter of fact, yeah. Dante Ellington who many at one point thought would be a first round draft pick. So what led to your immediate success?

Unknown Speaker
I think it was really good for me to have that one year develop as a red shirt. I mean, I was I was 240 pound, high school senior, I bulked up to like 265, before coming to Alabama, and just having that year to develop, that I was a tackle in high school, and then it got to be that center that whole year, as a red shirt. Going against those guys. Just working and trying to get better and better. And then I think it really helped me a lot when the new coaching staff with frangioni and Jim Bob Hill doozer, the offensive line coach came in, and they had a style that kind of fit to fit the way I play a little more. And, you know, I got in there. And like Derek said, it’s a learning curve, especially early on. And it’s easy to let the game be larger than life and to be kind of overwhelming, you know, you work you work that stuff out and just keep going. Keep working. And, you know, it was always my I came Alabama, it was my, you know, it was always my goal in my dream, you know, to go do this in the NFL. And guys like, Chris, were, you know, those were my idols. And I want to be just like him, I remember being in training camp, my first training camp my freshman year, and we’re out there doing like, it was supposed to be two days, but we had to walk through like a, you know, 70% speed walkthrough that was pretty effectively we were doing three days. And it was this was just the freshman camp. And there was the night there was some nights where I’d be like full body cramps in my dorm room cry, I mean crying like, I’m trying to think in like, How am I supposed to keep doing this, I gotta do this for five more years. You know, and just trying to trying to you trying to keep focus and and learn from being down there at the bottom and be able to recover and keep going. But you know, that those kind of years toughen you up, you learn a lot, learn a lot from having great guys in front of you great leaders like Jared and then. And you know, that that’s kind of what helps you rise up. You don’t just really, there’s no one. There’s no one that just does this on their own.

Unknown Speaker
Right. Hey, can I piggyback out there? It’s so funny that you say that about the full body cramps and everything. I remember, we had our first rookie practice, and it was pretty much three days. And I came in out of shape. I mean, I was kicking it the whole summer before I got up there. And I lost probably like maybe 12 or 13 pounds in one day. It was a lot of waterway. After that first practice. I called my mom at night I said I don’t think I’m gonna be able to make it here. I want to come back home. She said Listen, you ain’t coming back home. Oh, no, where you go go, so you better figure it out. So I want to run it out and figure it out, man. But it was tough. You know? I mean, you’re a high school kid. And literally, you know, you don’t have the mindset that these guys 2223 years old. And these are grown men been pumping iron. You know, they’re strong, mentally tough. And you’re thrown into the fire like that. It was hard, man. I felt like winning my first day.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, no, no. Callaway is, he’s a really good offensive line coach in when we were in there with, you know, just the freshman camp, he tested us. And he pushed us to our limits to get us ready for when the older guys would come in. And I don’t mean the same exact nights, man. I’m ready to ready to hang it up. Like how am I gonna do this,

Unknown Speaker
Chris, right.

Marvin Constant
Yeah, but I also have to count in fact that this was before the NCAA really started to crack down in practice, because the Junior League we had three practices that day. So now they do two one day one, Nick, I told y’all a soft man. We were doing three days and duboce was not letting up on us.

Chris Samuels
No, he wasn’t. No he was he was hard nosed now.

Marvin Constant
I think he was trying to do the junction boys on us. Yeah.

Justin Riley
Chris and Jared, let’s talk about that. Nine season after that loss to Louisiana Tech. That team had one of the best turnarounds I’ve ever seen in college football, and many candidates out but you know, we did the exact opposite beat Florida twice. Like I mentioned earlier won the SEC title first time since 92. What led to that amazing season?

Unknown Speaker
I think awesome leadership. You know, Canadians Griffin, Sean Alexander myself, I’m Milo Lewis, Miguel mer. And we had a lot of young guys that can simply flat out play man, I thought we had a solid coaching staff. And uh, we just jailed together and we play and you know, and it’s so funny that, you know, I think about this my senior year. You know, when I came in my rookie year, my freshman year, we only have 13 scholarships, and a lot of those guys didn’t get redshirted like Calvin Sigler, Fernando, Brian, Steve Stanley, a lot of those guys, they played their freshman year. So I think about what if those guys would have been redshirted, and they would have came back and they would have played with us that senior year, we probably want a national championship to be honest with you, you know, with that extra senior leadership, because if you think about it on offense, we only had two seniors that were started. That was me and Sean Alexander. on offense on defense, two seniors was on. It was only maybe three or four Miguel mer, Milo cominius. Griffin. And I think it was only three senior starters on defense. So if you look at it from just a leadership standpoint, you know, with seniors, we really didn’t have the probably maybe five or six starters that were seniors. So we couldn’t return all of those guys that came in you know, under that probation, those probation years, you know, and didn’t register those guys back then if we would have registered in the back then we’d probably get over the hump. But it was an amazing year, man. I had a lot of fun. A lot of fun. We had a good team. The game was easy for me. I didn’t give up a sec. I didn’t give up a fresher I’m coming out of each game with you know, five or six pancakes. Shawn Alexander’s running while Freddie Mellon’s our defense was solid. And we got a lot done, man. You know, unfortunately, we failed a lot tech on a last minute pass. We lost the Tennessee I hate that I never beat Tennessee. And we went rolling from there. And then we want to fall short to Michigan. But it was an amazing year man just to beat Florida in the swamp. They hadn’t lost in the swamp, if I’m not mistaken in 31 games. It was like the big guru guru. Back then, because he was running spread offense before anybody else in the sec was running spread. nobody really knew how to defend that guy at that particular time. And we wanted to beat him down there. And I remember coming off the field, one of the guys that will see y’all again. I said yeah, we don’t beat y’all as this again. And we want to play them in the SEC championship. And it was a tight game for a long time now until it’s reversed feel and took him to the house. And then eventually, we started seeing roles in those guys.

Marvin Constant
Well, Chris really wanted to say was this season would have completely different outcomes, we’d have a little bit better kicky. It was a lot of missed field goals cost us and things. That’s just the truth. Yeah.

Justin Riley
So can you piggyback on that Jared can tell us a little bit about that season what it meant to you.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, man. I mean, be honest. What you’re not really I mean, your freshman year, I mean, it’s just one time you’re just trying to survive. I mean, that. I mean, I remember the year, but I couldn’t tell you the ebbs and flows. I just remember just trying to survive. I do remember, um, you know, how much I looked up to our older guys. And I’m not just saying that because Chris is here. I mean, I’m really thankful to him, him and Griffin. I mean, those guys did so much for my career just set a precedent of how you’re supposed to conduct yourself as a leader and how to just be a man and you know, if if we hadn’t had those guys, we wouldn’t have you know, rebounded from those two tough losses want to uh, you know, small school in law tech. In in still went on to rally and play good late in the year. But yeah, man, it’s your freshman year is kind of tough. Oh, I don’t remember from one week at a time. I just remember just trying to survive.

Marvin Constant
I’ll tell you a funny moment from my freshman year Chris, you might remember this. We were all in the main meeting room. And the talking about Canadians griffie Canadians walks into the room with the tank top on, everybody’s in full conversation. Canadians walks in the room and all talking to stop everybody look like what penal institution did challenged.

Unknown Speaker
He was a grown man when he got there cuz he was a junior. College got hairy chest big muscles everything he was ready to go.

Marvin Constant
He walked in like this. I’ve never seen a room just get quiet like everybody. Like I don’t know what he played but I hope your monster out of the box.

Justin Riley
Jermaine is a fan. You know how special was that nine, nine season for you. I know, I was a freshman there that time. Pretty big deal for me seeing all this stuff in front of me. But what was it like for you?

Unknown Speaker
It was amazing. And the LA tech game? Yeah, we felt the way but those two wins against Florida that define the season for me, um, that, that that wind down there and Gainesville, like, it was it was amazing. Like, you know, as fans, you know, hardcore fans were emotionally tied to the tie. So whatever y’all do on that field on Saturday that make or break our the rest of our week. So let’s say I had a great couple of weeks after that Florida game. I was I was in college at the time, too. I was just across the way and Stillman. So you know, um, it was good to be able to have those bragging rights. If social media was around that time, they definitely would have heard about it. And then then the Tennessee laws man that that was the big thing to me. Maybe Maybe it’s a generational thing, but to me, the Tennessee game is still bigger than the Auburn game and arbitrary I have 24 seven things especially here in Birmingham, you know, you you see the logo on people cars, you don’t let them over in traffic, though it does what to do. But with Tennessee, it’s just something like, I hate losing a Tennessee man. I really really do. And I remember those years just Payton putting it on those 4114 one year and then he was like, Oh cool. We got him and then they win a national championship with T Martin and I met him on at a comedy show and I told him about itself as a as a fan man that that 99th season was I would say that season probably 94 season old five season where we came up short but those were great great teams man like you look at that roster top to bottom and 99 is like how did we not winning that is like we were we were stacked man and future NFL ballers on that squad. So it was just so up and down. There’s like we just couldn’t couldn’t get over the hump. I don’t know what what y’all was doing. You know, after the game, but this is my thing as a fan. I always want to ask you guys, what is it like? I’m number one putting on that jersey for the first time because to me that that jersey as I’m looking at it on on marvins wall, it does something to me. Like it’s simple, but it moves me emotionally. So what is it like for you guys to put on that jersey for the first time? And then step out in front of that crowd? And Brian, Danny, like, what is that feeling? Like?

Unknown Speaker
Well, I’ll tell you, for me, it was amazing man. Um, I grew up, you know, a Bama fan. And to be honest with you when Arvin was playing when they had their good years with Bo Jackson, you know, I was a Bo Jackson fan. And, you know, I will kind of root for him, you know, you know, because I was all about the state. But overall, deep in my heart, I was all the way Bama. So once I received my scholarship there, and I put that jersey on and went out there in front of all those fans. I mean, it was amazing. I mean, you know, everything. It made my juices flowing. I’m pumped up. I’m excited. I feel blessed. I feel honored just to be there. And the grind and perform in front of that crowd man was unbelievable.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, it’s a pretty amazing feeling. You know, that becomes part of your identity. Now, you’ve been you’ve been wanting to be this college athlete and you’ve been wanting to do this. And then now you have this Alabama jersey, you’ve got your number. And you know, there’s a lot of pride in there. You got your family’s name on the back. And now it’s a pretty big moment. You know, you try not to put too much into that because you want to stay focused. But yeah, I mean, especially growing up a fan of bam, that was huge for me.

Justin Riley
How about you, Jared, what was that moment like for you? I was cool, man. I mean, I mean, the

Unknown Speaker
first time when I really get you is when you come on your official visit, and you go through dinner and you’re going around the state or the university and they take you to the stadium and you don’t know what’s going on. You just kind of follow in your system. coaches are whatever you walk in that locker room they get your jersey hanging in the locker your name on it. That’s probably the probably one of the fondest memories of my, my whole football career. It really gets you let you know that, you know, you could actually be there and I know all the schools did it, but I didn’t know that. And it I mean, it was it was pretty impressive. And then, you know, once you put it on for real and get your name on your back and everything represent your family. pretty special moment.

Funnymaine
Wow. Matt

do I can go.

Justin Riley
Yes, please.

Marvin Constant
So for me, I grew up sending coax in Bing so I always hear the PA announcer calling everybody’s name. So for me it wasn’t the physical act of putting on a jersey that meant so much to me as much as making my first half and Brian did he hear him say Marvin constantly on top of for me, that was the moment when I felt that Okay, now we’ve made it so that what that meant more to me than putting the jersey I’m just hearing my name being called over the over the systems in front of those 80 something thousand people that I grew up selling coaching this thing, watching them cheer for other people.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, that that was always like a dream of mine to you know, put on that jersey. And you know, hear that crowd and scored touchdown. If I could just do that, but not get hit, like, take out the hit part. It’d be a dream come true.

Justin Riley
I moved to predictions. Let’s talk about the current team. And let’s start out with you Jermaine. What are you looking forward to the most about this 2020 team?

Unknown Speaker
I think I’m as weird as this has been, you know, with the late start with you know, not 20 to 20% of the fans coming in. Everything surrounding COVID just the climate other country. As weird as it’s been. I think this is going to be one of Alabama’s best teams. I’m with Matt Jones returning. Um, I think he’s ready. I think he’s ready to do what he needs to do. Jaylen waddle. Um, we got the vontae back. Um, the backfield is Stagg nazy wanted to come back I think Brian robertson is finally back healthy and that the young guy from um, from IMG that got hurt Larry Sanders. Yes, yes, Trey Sanders. And then on defense, these young guys that everybody’s talking about all these young corners. And I haven’t Dylan Moses back at the linebacker spot. I really believe man, this this may be one of the best teams. And I think because of everything that’s going on, I think that actually locked in and more focused on the game. I watched some of the interviews and they’re talking about, man, it’s just so hard watching all these other schools play. And I think by the time they get on their field with extra time to practice and learn these plays, I think we’re gonna see a 40 point offense per game, and a less than 18 point on defense. Take the field so I think there’s I’m ready man, I think there’s gonna be one of the best Bama teams of where I can’t say the decade it’s a new decade, but they’ll they’ll set the tone.

Marvin Constant
Okay, I got a quick question for you though. Um, so you say one of the best teams that’s actually going to be appointed to a be able to prove because for the first time ever, they’re gonna play 10 sec games. Nobody’s ever done that. So how do you see them holding up playing 10 sec games because again 10 sec games is a rule schedule.

Unknown Speaker
I think we’re we’re ready for it. Like I said, I think the extra time has given extra guys time to get ready physically mentally of everybody. So I think a lot of people will try to put an asterisk by it because of them not being able to play that out of the conference schedule. But you made a great point with them playing so many sec games you take the astronauts off like this is gonna be big boy football right here

Marvin Constant
because they beat 10 sec teams

Unknown Speaker
right now you know you don’t get it. You get a gold star for this one like this is gonna be big boy, sec football and i think i think they got something to prove. I don’t think a lot of the guys were happy with how they had a defense play last year. I wouldn’t happen. So I threw something at this. This is gonna be a good one.

Unknown Speaker
I’ll tell you what i’m not i’m not updated on the Current roster at this point. But I’ve been watching anytime Bama comes on, I try to watch him. When I have time I got you know, three young ones. So I’m running behind him a lot of times coach High School ball, but our seasons canceled because of COVID. So we’re not, you know, coach I coaching in Potomac, Maryland, offensive coordinator at Germantown High School, actually, it’s in German town, and northwest High School, we actually made it the state that we lost last year. But um, one thing that I can say, like I said, I’m not like, you know, up on the Current roster with the young guys, and I’ll catch up once the season starts. But once I retired, I went back and I worked under Coach Saban for three years, two years as a student coach, because I didn’t graduate from college yet. So I went back went to schools, I finished my degree. So I was a student coach on the field. And then he hired me as player development. And one thing that I will say they will be prepared. Coach Saban is always working. I mean, it seems like all he can think about is football. He’s prepared when other teams are not preparing when other teams are vacationing and golfing and having fun co same as in the office with those coaches. And they’re working. So I look for them to be shocked right away. Of course, they’re going to have some games where they spot around from time to time that I think they’re going to be ahead of the curve simply because Coach Saban at works everybody and he’s going to have those guys ready to play. Alright.

Marvin Constant
Hey, Chris. Chris, you there? Yeah. I hope you’ve won like coach saving an IV, will you?

Chris Samuels
Trust me? Don’t worry. I remember I remember Dustin McClintock on big fullback, and he was just a knucklehead, great football player, but a knucklehead like the party. And I think he showed up late that day, one day, and he was trying to explain the Coach Williams, the running back coach, why he was late. And he was like, I’ll be stars going off on him. And I’m saying, Justin, What’s your major? He was like marine biology. He said, you’re gonna drown.

It was hilarious.

Marvin Constant
Now, that’s one of the nice stories.

Chris Samuels
But he was a bee. Yeah.

Justin Riley
Jerry, what do you what are your thoughts on the upcoming season? And what are you looking forward to the most?

Unknown Speaker
I’m looking forward to the schedule. I mean, it’s gonna be like the NFL. You know, I mean, NFL, like, every week, even if there’s even if the record is bad, you better bring it are you gonna lose. And, you know, in college and SEC is a little different, you know, got a little more balanced, balanced power. But these conferences, I mean, Clemson they got to win. They got to beat one good non conference a year. And basically in the playoffs or whatever. But I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun watching an all sec schedule weekend and week out. I mean, just as a fan now, just being able to turn on a game and you know, 11 o’clock, 836 o’clock, eight o’clock, every game is gonna be good. Or is the team. I mean, I don’t really know, Satan’s gonna have them ready to go. I know that. And I know, they’re always going to have some good running backs and, and, and good dB. So I don’t know, we’ll see. Evan,

Unknown Speaker
I think Chris’s point about saving, having guys ready to go. I think it’s gonna go a long way. Especially when you look at what the limited on the field stuff has done to the NFL, that’s got to be a part of the reason that you’ve seen so many injuries in week one, you know, and the way that saving goes about handling adversity and preparing guys is it’s unparalleled. So I think that’s going to go a long way. Especially in this type of schedule, and the like. So this is gonna be a really exciting season. Every week is gonna be a good game.

Justin Riley
And y’all talked about leadership earlier. How big is having Dylan Moses, Josh Malan and the Brian. What Ray coming back to that defense and the team as a whole.

Chris Samuels
Um, yeah, I want to hear from the linebacker in here.

Marvin Constant
Which one? There’s two. There’s two.

Chris Samuels
Oh, okay. Well, well, both of y’all.

Marvin Constant
Jared. I think he wants to hear from you, Mr. Johnson.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, like I said, I mean, I don’t know the Guys, um, I don’t I don’t know, their personalities or you know, what type of leaders they are. I mean, obviously, you know, if they are, you know, voted by their team, you know, that being you know, that carries a lot of weight. It says a lot about them. But But yeah, I mean, anytime you got good senior leadership, it goes a long way. So, as far as what type of leaders these guys are, and how big should we get a team? I don’t, I don’t know a lot a lot about them.

Marvin Constant
Well, I’ll say this, anytime a guy’s just starting out, he’s just started for a reason, because usually he’s the better guy. So when you lose a guy like Moses, it’s definitely going to impact your defense. And when you try to replace a guy like that, not only are you losing the athletic ability, you you’re losing that knowledge of the game, when you have a guy who’s played and he knows what he’s looking at, he can visualize the offense based upon the sets, the motions, the checks, he can relate things to other guys to keep to keep everybody where they need to be when you have a new guy coming in who’s not used to seeing all that it definitely impacts the entire defense because again, you gotta know Okay, you got troops over here you got motion, but look for look for the crack, look for whatever, but young guy he didn’t know that. So having Moses back I think definitely helped improve that defense issue overall.

Unknown Speaker
I think I think the two young guys that got linebacker last year is big. But I think what really tripped up the defense last year, aside from belingon hurt was Mack Wilson leaving that was a shocker. Um, you know, it had he been back and been able to step in and fill in that role and kind of got young guys but his talent, I think that would have paid dividends. So they literally were in a rebuilding last year and two young guys, they caught a lot of heat, but now they got a year under their belt. And so now we got three experienced but really for experienced linebackers. So I think I think it’s gonna pay off.

Justin Riley
One of the things I’m really looking forward to we mentioned it earlier is this young class coming in. These guys seem like they’re hungry, and they understand already what the Alabama standards really all about. You know, last year, I was told we had a lot of guys who were looking around for someone to be that leader or that guy there just to really take over, but I feel like when I’ve been hearing from practices, these guys don’t wait for somebody to step up. They want to be that guy. So I’m pretty excited about that. And definitely excited about this new linebacker out will will Anderson he might understand it looking like Derrick Thomas, so I’m really excited to see how that translates into the SEC schedule. All right, guys, y’all ready to head into the predictions?

Unknown Speaker
Yep, I am. Alright.

Justin Riley
Alright, we’re gonna start out with number five Florida against fighting kittens. Ole Miss. We’ll start with you Jermaine.

Chris Samuels
Was it Florida Ole Miss.

Justin Riley
Yes.

Unknown Speaker
All right. Well, first, let’s just revel in the fact that Deion Sanders Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin are all coaching in the same state. That’s amazing. Oh, but I think I think Florida they they’ve been trending up under coach Mullen. I don’t think Kiffin has his personnel and everybody is gonna be exciting. He’s always gonna motivate his guys, but I think Florida is gonna run away with this.

Justin Riley
All right, Chris.

Chris Samuels
I’m rolling with Lane Kiffin man. I noticed this first year like you said, I agree with everything you’re saying. As far as you know, you got to get things in motion, you know, get his personality imprinted into his team and what he wants but I think lanes are excellent play collar, man. I mean, he moves the offense. And I think they’re gonna put up some points. I think they’re gonna win.

Justin Riley
Hi, Jerry. You got Florida or Ole Miss.

Jarrett Johnson
Oh, I’m gonna go to Florida. Not really know why. With think, Wayne, Kevin, he needs to close. He’s staying out of the bars. It’d be doing all right.

Justin Riley
Evan,

Evan Mathews
man, I really have so little clue what’s going on. I’m trying to look up the odds in the lines of his game. A little cheat. Cheat like it’s the same thing, man. On the line here, I guess. You know, miss. Big, big coming out party for Lane Kiffin. I’m gonna go Ole Miss

Justin Riley
Marvin.

Marvin Constant
I think Florida has to do a little bit more work at quarterback but off the strength of one of our former teammates. There’s Gil. His nephew Jeremiah moon actually plays for Florida some of those games.

Justin Riley
I gotta go with the Gators too. I think Kyle Trask has a lot to prove this year. And we’re gonna see what he’s all about. I think Lane Kiffin like I mentioned earlier he’s not quite there yet although I think he will surprise some folks this year. Not gonna be this week. I’m gonna Florida Alright, those other guy I gotta I gotta snitch

Unknown Speaker
on my cousin that was a homer pick because he definitely grew up with gators fan so I’m sorry.

Justin Riley
We know about that. I saw your podcast with him and you brought his mama loyal

Marvin Constant
to the time Okay.

Justin Riley
Mom You know that you know the Florida coach flood to your house in a helicopter one trying to get you over there to Gainesville. Oh, man,

Marvin Constant
listen, I’m gonna tell you a funny quick story. When Florida coaches came to my house I think said damn me out man cuz sooner they want that don’t do both new college. Sandra said you live two doors down for me. So I’ve been doing Cedric most of my life. So you know every time a coach would come to my house the coaches always knew like said can you stop watching my house man.

Justin Riley
Hi, number eight ahlborn versus number three Kentucky. Kentucky.

Unknown Speaker
Kentucky, Kentucky I can’t do it. Kentucky

Chris Samuels
I think Auburn when

Evan Mathews
I got Auburn too.

Justin Riley
Kentucky is pretty decent but there was out the services of Lynn Bowden at his departure the NFL thing all right. When’s it going away? All right. Number six LSU versus Mississippi State

Chris Samuels
LSU

Jarrett Johnson
if LSU

Unknown Speaker
yet this this one is really tough to call because LSU is lost everybody we know they still got a lot of fights around this on the lean toward but the NFL departures coaching departures guys opting out it’s just it’s just tough. But you got to think that that talent and coach they’re gonna put together but I think it’ll I think it may start off closer than what people are expecting.

Marvin Constant
You know what? Mississippi State was moving in the right direction last year. I’m gonna take Mississippi State.

Evan Mathews
I’m gonna go to home game death Valley’s top player.

Marvin Constant
Yeah, but unless you are the head trainer. Come on, man.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, but to be honest with you, though. LSU is built like Bama. They got two or three deep, man they’re gonna be in a pipeline. That’s right. Yeah. I’m still taking Mississippi State. I gotcha.

Justin Riley
I mean, yeah, I like mississippi state, but I don’t think he’s gonna be enough to run over LSU Yes. LSU is trying to find themselves right now. But I think LSU who are trying to find themselves a lot more powerful than the mississippi state right now. So yeah, definitely. LSU Alright, Rocky Top versus South Carolina.

Chris Samuels
rockin top.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, it’s gonna hurt my heart But uh, under coats. They really are trending in the right direction. I think Tennessee BIA only know they’re doing bowl games this year. But uh, Tennessee they I think they are on par for a pretty good season.

Unknown Speaker
Yeah, Tennessee, I can see also famously

Marvin Constant
stopped Christmas. Shout out to Clint hair. I don’t know if you remember Clint. Clint was a student training when we hit school. Clean is the head trainer in South Carolina right now. Someone to gradually clean, sir.

Justin Riley
This was a brand lose. I gotta go with that to Tennessee. Finished that season strong last year. I don’t care who they beat the fact that they didn’t quit and end up going to a bowl and won the bowl. I think they’re going to be a surprise team in the East this year. I gotta go with Tennessee here. All right, number 10. Texas a&m versus Vandy.

Chris Samuels
Texas a&m for me. And now

Marvin Constant
