Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins opened up about feeling misled by the organization during his appearance on Netflix’s “Quarterback” series. Cousins, who signed a four-year deal with the Falcons in 2024, revealed that the team’s decision to draft quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round shortly after his arrival caught him off guard.
“Certainly, if I had that information around free agency, it would’ve affected my decision,” Cousins said in the documentary. “I had no reason to leave Minnesota, with how much we loved it there, if both teams were going to be drafting a quarterback high.”
Cousins, a 12-year NFL veteran, emphasized that while the situation was disappointing, it wasn’t entirely unexpected.
“I’ve also learned in 12 years in this league that you’re not entitled to anything — it’s all about earning your spot and proving yourself,” he added.
The Falcons’ selection of Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft drew widespread scrutiny, especially after committing $180 million to Cousins. The move suggested a long-term succession plan, but also raised questions about internal communication and transparency during free agency negotiations.
While Cousins remains the clear starter heading into the 2025 season, his comments reflect a tension that could shape the dynamic between Atlanta’s veteran signal-caller and its quarterback of the future.
