Xabi Alonso Emerges as Leading Candidate for Chelsea Manager Job

Posted on May 11, 2026May 11, 2026 by Santiago Leon

Chelsea F.C. are considering appointing Xabi Alonso as their next head coach, though no decision has been made yet. Alonso is reportedly open to the move, while outgoing AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is also a leading candidate.

Alonso, 44, has been out of work since being dismissed by Real Madrid CF in January, just seven months after replacing Carlo Ancelotti. Despite a strong start, including a Clasico win over FC Barcelona, Madrid fell behind in the title race and lost the Supercopa final before his departure.

Before Madrid, Alonso earned widespread praise at Bayer 04 Leverkusen by leading the club to its first-ever Bundesliga title with an unbeaten domestic campaign and a run to the Europa League final.

Chelsea have been searching for a permanent replacement after parting ways with Liam Rosenior in April following a short spell in charge. Interim coach Calum McFarlane is leading the team through the end of the season.

Tactically, Alonso is admired for his possession-heavy, high-tempo football and flexible systems, often built around a 3-4-2-1 formation. Analysts believe Chelsea’s young squad could fit his style well with a few additions.

Iraola is also viewed as a strong fit due to his aggressive pressing system and success developing young talent at Bournemouth. His ability to integrate new players quickly could suit Chelsea’s constantly evolving squad under BlueCo ownership.
