NFL Teams That Have Never Had the No. 1 Overall Pick in the Draft

Posted on April 22, 2026April 22, 2026 by Santiago Leon

In the long history of the NFL Draft, securing the No. 1 overall pick is often tied to rebuilding franchises and pivotal roster decisions. While many teams have held that top selection at least once, a select few have never found themselves in that position. As of today, only three current NFL franchises can make that unique claim: the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and Seattle Seahawks.

A Rare NFL Distinction

The absence of a No. 1 overall pick doesn’t necessarily reflect a lack of success. In fact, all three franchises have experienced notable achievements, including Super Bowl victories and consistent playoff appearances. Instead, this distinction often highlights organizational stability, competitive consistency, or simply the unpredictable nature of draft positioning.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have been one of the more successful franchises in NFL history, winning multiple Super Bowls and fielding legendary quarterbacks like John Elway and Peyton Manning. Despite periods of struggle, the Broncos have never landed the league’s worst record outright to secure the top draft slot.

Baltimore Ravens

Since their establishment in 1996, the Baltimore Ravens have built a reputation for strong defense and smart front-office decisions. With two Super Bowl titles and consistent competitiveness, Baltimore has never needed the No. 1 overall pick to build a championship roster.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have also avoided the top draft position throughout their history. Known for their “Legion of Boom” era and Super Bowl XLVIII victory, Seattle has relied on strong drafting, player development, and strategic trades rather than top overall selections.

What This Means for Team Building

Not having the No. 1 pick hasn’t limited these franchises. Instead, it underscores how successful teams can be built through:

  • Smart scouting and mid-to-late round draft success
  • Strategic trades and free agency moves
  • Strong coaching and player development systems

Final Thoughts

While many teams have relied on the No. 1 overall pick to reshape their future, the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens, and Seattle Seahawks stand out as proof that sustained success can be achieved without ever drafting first overall. It is a rare and intriguing piece of NFL trivia that highlights the many paths to building a winning franchise.
