Pac-12 Championship Recap Game 2019

The PAC-12 Championship. Oregon leapt out to a 20-point first half edge over No. 5 Utah, and then held on in the second half buoyed by the running of star running back CJ Verdell. Verdell’s 70-yard run, the longest against the Utes all season, gave the Ducks a two-score lead again and they held on to beat Utah 37-15 at Levi’s Stadium on Friday night. Giving them a birth to the Rose Bowl.

Facing the nation’s premiere rush defense, Oregon didn’t shy away from running it. They did just that on the game’s opening drive, and part of the success came with Justin Herbert keeping the ball on two occasions, a look the Ducks had rarely showed this season. Herbert ran for 22 on the drive, and from there Cyrus Habibi-Likio, Travis Dye and CJ Verdell took care of business. Verdell scored his first of three touchdowns on that drive to make it 7-0.

What was your reactions over the PAC 12 championship game this past Friday.

reaction was ewhat to say? It was. It was an absolutely terrific performance by Oregon. Obviously, Utah had so much on the line. The premise around the game was that it this is Utah’s chance. This is their chance to Make the college football playoff get the ball back to the college football playoff. And that was kind of what you were hearing mostly. Oregon, you know, obviously have lost to Arizona State and had their play out they dropped outside the top 10 at number 13. And so you definitely It was definitely built out as this is Utah’s moment. And you were here and really a whole lot about the docs know, and I felt that and you know yet we had at our podcast last weekend. And you know, it’s pretty harsh and I decelerated Justin Herbert after his Arizona State performance. He also had a pretty meager performance against Oregon State. The media It was definitely all the talk was centered was centered around Utah. And where they’re going to make the playoffs they want in Georgia last, they probably were going to get in. And you heard this whole narrative built around Utah, and you’re very little around Oregon. And they were kind of like the Forgotten man. Only two weeks earlier, they were in number five or number six was in the college football playoffs, and they were looking like, they’re going to get in until the Arizona state laws. And all of a sudden, it totally changed. And this is all around Utah. And I remember yesterday a prediction and I kind of was like, were you picking us off? Because I don’t know why. Why did you pick us off?

yeah I just like here that I even saw that online like Utah stinks day job they’re always overrated know Oregon’s pretty good but Oregon plays. I mean if you go back and watch Oregon to season watch from the first half gets offered, watch them against USC watch that watch them in second half gets Washington watch them. The game against Utah, when Oregon was playing up to their ability they work toward a problem with Oregon this year is the consistency It really is. And that’s why they’re not going to cost anyway, to go back to what I was saying. So as I asked you and you picked Oregon and Eddie, you saw Utah and I was kind of disappointed a little annoyed at Oregon. I was like, You know what, I’m just going to your pick. But as the week went on, and I was just hearing the push and I was like narrative and I don’t know something was not unlike something feels that Utah couple things are going to happen. Probably Utah probably won’t play as good and I will make you talk did not play as well. None of that was possibly execution. A lot of it was Oregon. And he just won a couple things. Unlike if they don’t execute well maybe they’re just a little bit off and this Oregon team comes in with the chips then we’re being overlooked. No one has given us a chance. And the fact that I thought man, the bad Oregon had the more talented roster and an analytic show it to town Plaza has, or in at 17. They have utak number 47. So, the little more talent roster with a chip on his shoulder, played super motivated against the team that maybe is a little tight, maybe just not executing quite as well. Maybe not playing as loose as they normally do. I saw a little bit of a problem. And I and I wanted to change my tech but I didn’t because I’m like, You know what? I think I have it this way. I’m feeling of winning Oregon I just thought that and that’s what ends up happening because as the week went on there’s something about it that I was like, I think Oregon’s gonna win I think they’re gonna all stopped Utah’s Isaac stop I did wouldn’t a kickstart I think they’re gonna win a strong word. Yeah and and and the game is the game to get close obviously it was 20 knots and and it could have been worse. Honestly. Couple ill timed off starts by Oregon down the red zone made them fade the red zone opportunities a little harder. Also, Oregon’s receivers dropped six passes. So if it wasn’t for a couple of rough passes a couple of penalties I think Oregon for the possibly that not 27 and not tender 30 nothin at the end of the first house. I mean, the first half was not even close for was playing very well. He was running, he was on target with his passes good decisions. The defense was on fire, like you talk couldn’t really do anything soft that a couple fourth down opportunities. Oregon was running well, I mean first house, Oregon really dominated second half. Once again, the offense did a little bit like a tunnel here for Oregon. And that’s been a little inconsistent. And all of a sudden a couple drop passes, you know, a couple missed blocks, a couple bad passes by Herbert. And all of a sudden the offense wasn’t doing a whole lot. fumble that got them deeper their own territory.

So it’s a little worrisome second half because Oregon started not executing well. And then Utah did make a couple of plays on on their offense score points on on Oregon defense, and they got within eight points. And then they actually got the ball back at the Gothic slightly within Oregon Saratov remember got they got like the 48 or something, and it was a fourth down. And I’m like is winningham going to go for it again or he’s going to plan it? Well he decided to plan it this time and get his defense just to play very well. It’s not a given up very much. pretty much put as he says out there said, hey, go some working, give us a call back and we’ll try to get down the field Titus game, cJ videl hit 70 yard touchdown run. And when that happened, I think everyone in the stadium was tossing then I think to a couple of series is Utah. Basically he got back like three times and then he ended up throwing an interception, Georgia Tech, and then cJ overdale had another 35 yard touchdown run, and it ended up being 37 to 15 for the most part, other than a slight period in that third quarter. Oregon pretty much dominated that game was Actually that 3715 sometimes you like the game was not as close as it as the score appears and like the game was closer than appears. I thought that was a fake war. I thought Utah was way too close for how the game actually looked like right now. So there you go. And so the organelle ducks finish loving into Pac 12 champions number six in the college football playoffs and in the Rose Bowl is what is probably, but not not probably, I think it is considered by most the best non playoff game this whole season. Back to the Utah game, who would you give the MVP to

Oh my goodness, a lot of guys. Two different around for 208 yards. Funny sad about cJ videl. In two games this year. Hhe rushed for 465 yards, six, touchdown, Washington State and Utah. The other 11 games he rushed for 700 yards and four touchdowns. Say it’s a wily? CJ Rodel definitely is a guy that can have huge games, but he also can have pretty marginal game. And that’s kind of what he is. He runs hard and sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. So definitely had a huge game on as far as that. So he was the MVP. He was the MVP at the end of the other couple guys. That you would consider MVP candidate was Brady Brees, who had a tackle for loss and a key interception tech floss and fourth down the gave Oregon the ball back. And he also had an interception that stopped to drive that route at the beginning of the game that really stops the momentum that could have been got back by Utah and cave on tibideaux in two and a half sacks three tackles for loss. He was just his Utah really was having trouble blocking him. They’re having a very hard time lockup. So I’d say those two guys also Troy die who had interception, and he made plays on defense was pretty good lot of defensive guys. Offense I would probably say CJ bird out. Oh, Johnny Johnson, the third wide receiver had a touchdown. And he had a huge catch for 30 yards over the defenders back. He played very well. If you remember he had a huge game get Arizona State almost single handedly brought them back to victory. Had a good game. Oregon State and then had another good game against Utah. He comes back next year and he’s had an excellent year will probably be an all Pac 12 for a guy or two that

Justin Herbert had 123 yards what touchdown. How would you rate her bird performance this game?

First half he was phenomenal. He ran the ball well, I think he attacked a couple times so it may not look as good. But I think what actual where he carried the ball. I think he was nine carries for 42 yards. And he ran better than any other game to season. And honestly it was a wrinkle that opened up the offense. Honestly was it shows you how you should have been running probably all more this year. Sorry. us for yet. A second half. You didn’t do as well. Like I said. The offense kind of sputtered, some guys drop balls. jajuan Johnson is a guy, the Penn State guy who was a grad transfer and he was fine. He ended up he had a great game against USC three touchdowns. He also had a good game against Arizona with a big, huge, big touchdown. But last couple games he dropped some balls and in generally probably had about six or seven drops the season. Like pretty bad drops where he should get his catch it that I just found that he you know, came to Oregon, try to raise his draft stock. He obviously had injuries, missed the first games, four games due to injury. Then he just had trouble dropping the ball like you did at Penn State. I know a little bit of a disappointment for him today. And that was a problem he dropped a couple didn’t even Johnny Johnson dropped one and Jalen read. Jalen Rose kind of that kind of is a Hybrid kind of gadget kind of slot guy catches you know, takes revert versus and jet sweeps, takes short screens you know catch the ball down the field, but sometimes he does have a little issue tracking the ball down the field and he had a couple balls he should have thought. So that was probably a little problems that made Herberts completion percentage a little lower, but honestly Herbert finished the season 32 touchdowns, five interceptions, I think 3500 yards passing and 67% of his passes completed. I mean, you look at stats, you look at the fact that they finished 11 and two, they won the PAC 12 he did have a terrible performance if there isn’t a day. He didn’t have a very good performance in the second half. So a couple of losses definitely felt a little bit back on his play. But as a whole, just Herbert you know, you lead your team to a PAC 12 title. And he played pretty good in the factional title game. So Enough are savvy and pretty solid game. So I think Justin Herbert will probably have helped the draft. He probably will stabilize his draft stock. Nobody else made a couple really nice bats and still and if he can win the Rose Bowl gets very good defense in Wisconsin. I think he’ll firm up. His is probably probably, I think ultimately he gets picked in the top 10 for sure. Thank you. I think he’s gonna end up showing out too good and his interviews and I think his work workouts and I think he’s a high character guy and his production was definitely good enough. I think.

Well, no, no no not for quarterbacks? No and I’ll talk to him. They finished up top 10 for Herbert this year. I think they have a soul is a top 10 NFL pick in 2021. And I think kayvon tibideaux is a top 10 pick in 2022.

What impressed you from Utah?

Tyler Turner
I’m not a lot. I mean, I’ve seen Utah play. Utah is a very disciplined team, a well coached team, a very experienced team that nine starters that were seniors on defense, that senior start at quarterback, senior starter running back on. They were kind of what I thought and I always you know what? talent doesn’t lie. No, you proved it again. I always thought I always thought the biggest issue with the fact that they just lack elite talent, especially injuries happen. And you had Julian bakwin who was probably going to be an all Pac 12 safety, you’ll probably play in the NFL. He he hurt his knee in the first half. And immediately after they bring in his replacement, and like a few plays later, Justin Herbert completes a 45 yard touchdown pass over his backup. And that is where talent becomes an issue. If you have a guy, a starter go down. That guy who replaces him is just not near as good. I even remember back when Oregon didn’t have as much talent. I remember they’d have like, one of their starters one of the better players go down and then the backup you have the mirror like a massive drop off. And you’d be like, Are you kidding me? It’s like wow, that’s like, like, four opposite like you have a star there you got it, publish it and be guarded and when you get more talented guys I saw that with this work and especially at the event where you saw guys get hurt, or guys, or something happened and the backup would come in and be sometimes better. Like, if something happened to the started corners for Oregon do menorah menorah Thomas Graham McHale right the backup I think better than them. So it’s like okay, who cares? Who cares get hurt Bryson younger started linebackers he got hurt. They serve food again and I think he’s better than him just Cumberland went out for the season who came in to replace him kayvon tibideaux so I mean that’s why you have to get down because it adds depth. And you also have to have try to have add five guy for your roster is but more talented guys, the better your chances with injuries happen. And so but overall, this season is it no matter how you want to pay it, there’s been a couple pictures This was a successful season four again. They came in preseason number 11. The media picked them to win the North but actually lose the PAC 12 title who do not believe or not. And they came out and they finished 11 and two, they finished number six in the country, they won the PAC 12. It was a very successful season my Oregon, it didn’t quite make the college football playoff. And that’s unfortunate because I think they’re I think they’re actually better than Oklahoma. But you know what it is what it is, and I don’t think they would have been able to do this year. So I think they’re going to help galaxy’s better so it says they get to go the Rose Bowl, and I think that there’s a good chance that they beat Wisconsin, and it’s not gonna be an easy game Wisconsin’s more talented. It’s very kind of like Utah. Wisconsin’s not as talented as Oregon was nothing a little more talented than Oregon. Sorry, then you talk about that. Then you talk They have better running back in Utah. Jonathan Taylor’s one of the best running backs in in the game, the veteran offensive lines in Utah. They have guys playing NFL. Yeah. So I think they’re a little better team in Utah. And I think they’re a team that you know, if you had a team playoff, I think Wisconsin would belong in the playoffs. So yeah, I think it’s gonna be great game.

I think it was you deserved it. I think day I go out jumping off top my head. I think it’s what four or five on 25 victories a resounding SEC championship victory. The defense which had been the lines look very good the last two weeks. Um Yeah, I guess you probably they played a better game the last week of the season. I think Ohio State very good. And I think the first three teams are very good. I don’t they go home and really not. I mean, they’re good, but I think Oklahoma could lose to Georgia. I think Oklahoma could lose to Oregon. I think Oklahoma. Obviously they almost lost available for games they barely won on that they can lose Wisconsin. So I think the team four through eight, four through nine I mean it could lose to Alabama they could lose to Auburn. I think four through like 11 Florida, I think. I think you take teams five through 11 they could all beat Oklahoma. Including don’t use a whole lot just happened to be the one team. They wonder conference title. And yeah, so that’s why they got in and and they lost one game.

I think they’re just better. And I think it’s a great game once it’ll get the highest states. Great, but I gotta remain a little more talent. No, but you know why? I was thinking the same as committee. You don’t penalize teams for losing conference title games. And the only team that deserved to get penalize was Utah because they had not beaten any top 25. The only top 25 school they played the whole year up to Oregon was USC and they lost. And so then they lost by good not to the other top 45 team. They deserved to get penalized because probably they were rated a little high. Everyone else can’t drop Baylor are losing in overtime to a team that made the college football playoff. Georgia had three top 15 victories. And within the SEC title game, you can’t drop them.

I love this period. I have obviously followed early signed a really closely for the last like five years. Six years. Well really closely for the last for the last six years of follow up pretty good. And then obviously a diamond day in the last three years. Like he said, I think it was 65% the first year last year I think was 77. And I think this year you’re gonna I think you’re gonna get about 80% I think about 80% of guys sign so you’ll only have 20% laughs four fifths of us x five in the early 19 period. You know, the blueblood the tradition the guys you think the counter gonna really lock in great classes. Right now now now four seven composite class is Clemson. Number two is su number. And then you got like Georgia six and Texas is seven. Auburn Eight. Nine is Oklahoma. LSU is number five, Clemson is number nine. Sorry, Oklahoma’s number eight and continent number nine. So in the five year sample size of baseline talent, you still do not have a team that not in attempts top 25 still there has not been a team has made the college playoffs. So zero outside the top 10 only 16 so 14 of the 20 team and the 247 team talent composite era has made the playoffs so the best chance to it for your team to make the college football playoff is to have top 10 talent top 20 Top 25 Is it reasonable you can you can make it but if you had a better chance if you’re in the top 10 so I think really shooting for those top 10 classes my ducks we right now have like I said the number 11 class. We had a number seven class last year we were number 13 The year before so coming off a top 10 and that’s top 15 class um we would have to knock some big guys. We’d have to get some good guys to sign in order to get a top 10 class and we have to keep guys from flipping. I feel actually better that we get some higher rated guys than I do about not guys flip that I think there is going to be guys currently committed that are Johnny Wilson who’s a top 100 wide receiver. I think he flips Arizona State. I think miles Slusher, who’s a four star that committed to the docks, he has been flirting with braska and UCLA for some reason. I wonder if he is excited with the docs vontae Williams top 100 safety. I would watch Florida for him. Maybe the Georgia. Ducks might get him though I didn’t give you a little better about him than the other two. But the good news is I think Oregon feels pretty good about the number four rated player in the country Justin flow. They’re also in the top two of five star Kaylee Rango, the number eight rated player in the country and the number 77 rated player top 100 cornerback Dante Manning’s are also in the top two. And there’s also rumored that there’s a couple guys that are currently committed to other teams. That might flip out keep an eye on tree Sean Holden, he’s committed to it that’s Justin Riley Bama Crimson Tide, but I do CT might slip from the Crimson Tide. And it could be Oregon. The other one would be Arizona state for him. Also, Jermaine Burton committed tell us you took an official visit to Oregon. He’s another guy to possibly watch out for. So Oregon and he’s a very offensive I’ve got a little hard on it, but there’s one thing he’s a hell of a Kurt I know he was the 2015 recruiter of the Year by 247 sports. He landed, top 13 class decided that this might be in the interim coach or head coach. He still ended the top 16 class 2018 he landed a top 10 class number seven dislike coming off only a nine and four season. I mean, he is recruited well above his team’s record the last two years. So the fact that he now has a team that number six in the country and just won the Rose Bowl and flirted with the college football playoff. You have to think if I had to predict just Going off of what I know of him as a recruiter, and I think he lands the top 10 class, even if a couple guys flip. And he’s also good with the portal transfer portal. You know, he landed one Johnson, the former blue chip guy from Penn State as a wide receiver Atlanta, Dallas warmack, who used to play for Alabama. He landed Devin Williams, a top 50 player, the transfer from USC. You landed two years ago, DJ Johnson, a former top 100 player that was with Miami. I was looking at him to land a couple guys in the quarter. I would keep an eye on Justin shorter. Who is currently in the portal is a former five star from Penn State. I think he might land him and there’s some rumblings that he might get a quarterback and depending on who’s out there. There’s a guy I think of his name, but I’m not gonna say who it is. Because he hasn’t entered the portal yet, but he’s might not go the NFL draft is rumblings and I think he could land with Oregon. When he’s good. Let’s just let’s just say if he went to the NFL Draft to be drafted in the first three rounds, he’s that good. So, yeah, so I would say I think you had a couple guys the portal, I think he lands one of these five stars. I think Oregon lands about a top 10 class probably in the I’d say the ceiling would be about eight in the floor would be just outside the top satellite 12. So like an eight to 12 range, which stills a very good class.

Well, here’s the here’s the here’s it like, what’s the I call Oregon because I know other teams. Diaz is the number 14 rated class right now, which is pretty good. I mean, coming off the nod. nod Yeah, right team I dropped at Miami, they have the number 14 rated class. That’s good sign up. I don’t think they’re necessarily trending with anyone. But the good news is that They have the number 14 rated class, you know, even though they’re, even though they’re not trending, if they’re able to get the signatures of all those guys, you know, probably find a couple other guys. They couldn’t look at possibly a top 15. I could see them in the top 15 class. And remember, they had a couple of really good transfers last year guy like Jalen Phillips, the former five star from UCLA. He had to sit out this year, and then, you know, probably bouldering ended up actually playing transfer from USC. So I think that Miami will probably have a top 20 talent roster again next year. And who knows, maybe they can get things going well, that I think they’ll have enough talent to be I mean, ACC starbridge. So I think i think i think he can turn it around.
