Despite losing Aaron Rodgers just four plays into his Jets debut, New York rallied to stun the Buffalo Bills 22-16 with a walk-off punt return touchdown in overtime on Monday night.
After forcing a three-and-out on Buffalo’s first possession in overtime, rookie receiver Xavier Gipson called game by returning the opposition’s punt 65 yards for a game-ending touchdown.
The Jets looked to be on their way to a season-opening loss before outscoring the Bills 13-3 in the second half. New York’s comeback was inspired by the play of their defense and second-year wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
New York lost Rodgers early in the prime-time contest. He limped off the field early in the first quarter after appearing to get his foot caught in the turf on a sack. He was carted to the locker room before being ruled out.
Head coach Robert Saleh said postgame that he suspects the veteran quarterback, who was acquired in a trade this offseason, suffered an Achilles injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “It’s not good,” Saleh told reporters.
